  1. Nothing like a shot of silver to show up what needs to be done! I've always gone the grey primer route - only to have the silver top coat reveal the previously hidden blemish.
  2. Coming along nicely Derek! Looking forward to seeing some paint laid down.
  3. Just picked up on this build - as have added one of these to the stash. Great progress!
  4. Clever work on the spinner! The old drill-lathe is a versatile tool indeed... Thought you were lining up to have a cannon firing through the centre of the spinner (a la bf109) - to take care of race competitors!
  5. Great attention to detail!! Following with interest.
  6. A fine piece of finessing - that's come out really well. And handy being able to use your spare styrene draw as a bit of a guide. Interested now to see the canopy framing solved. It does seem quite pronounced looking back at your 1:1 pix hence the aluminium tape - else you could surely get away with a build of Surfacer and paint. Do you have access to a Silhoutte/Cricut cutter - as that'd allow some precision masks to be cut (inside and outside)?
  7. Excellent result on the canopy! Bear in mind the 1:1 canopy probably had it's own imperfections - bet they didn't have a 100% dust free environment either! Agree with Derek's comments that the addition of frames etc will cover/distract from the imperfections. Assume for the framing you'll be using that adhesive aluminium tape again? The use of the intermediate white styrene draw is of interest. With some pre-planning (ie buck undersizing) that might well have application for future projects of mine. You have a clever solution to getting the required fit at rear of canopy. Looking forward to next update.
  8. Well you certainly have a good draw there - that's one plus, and your decision to frame after is supported - so that's a second plus! I haven't experienced the 'orange peel' with PETG before (I use PETG for all my clear vacs these days) so your theory of a reaction with the one-part poly sounds plausible. How thick is the PETG - guessing 0.5mm from your pic? The other thing to play with a bit might be the temperature differential when you vac - eg pre-warm your buck (a bit of hairdryer) and don't have your PETG any hotter than you need to - the aim being to reduce the shock effect?? A quick googly reveals you can get a Phd in Plastics Engineering ( https://www.uml.edu/catalog/graduate/engineering/plastics-engineering/doctoral-programs.aspx ) - maybe you can apply for advanced standing after you've solved this one!
  9. Fantastic job vacforming the cowling as a 'one piece'. Almost seems a shame to cut off all those beautifully formed tree roots! That extra drilled hole has made all the difference - must remember that one next time I have something similar. The technique must give some reassurance on how that might work if it was to be part of your vac canopy solution. Following with interest to see some more magic.
  10. She (he?) looks rather brutish, but elegant at the same time. Marvellous work and very much enjoyed following the journey. Glad the silver-nickel rigging option worked out for you. And particularly impressed with your leftovers pile - it'd perhaps make a nice Xmas present if you hot glued all that to a display board and framed it!
  11. Well deserved and great prizes. I enjoyed building that Anson kit (a civilian VH-WMA) - there are some great schemes available for that
  12. Nice subject choice! I have one of these in the stash, so interested to follow the build.
  13. Brilliant result - first class concept. The photos make me feel like I am in a chase plane doing the air to air photography! Have you decided "what's next"?
  14. Really enjoying following this one. Great story telling with the model, jumpers and base photo....
  15. Just catching up with this one. Good subject choice and interesting to see how you've tackled the speed bumps on the way. Guessing you'll be printing decals for the pin striping using the VFR supplied as a template?
  16. Just catching up on this build - I'm rather partial to civilian aircraft so full marks for a brilliant choice of colour scheme - and really like your execution too. Definitely puts a smile on the dial! The parachutists will add a further dimension to the finished model. If you want something of a similar ilk - the Pilatus Porter has carried some wild schemes. Have a skim through options here http://www.pc-6.com/ eg D-FSKY http://www.pc-6.com/history/878-dfsky07.jpg
  17. Not sure if you've already selected rigging material Malc, or the actual diameters required (photos suggest they rigging has a bit of 'weight'?). One product to maybe consider is Albion Alloys Nickel Silver rod 0.2mm diameter (equivalent to 6.4mm in 1:1?). Retains it's rigidity and pops in place nicely if you have some pre-drilled holes. Can also get a good clean cut with sharp scissors if you're 1/2 a mm too long. I used it on my DH.84 (link below). Note you should matt clear it first - else it's too shiny shiny. Also note that their 0.1mm rod is too floppy to be useful IMO.
  18. Looking delightful. And the finish line surely within sight? Lots of interesting techniques being used here.
  19. Just catching up - lots of interesting techniques at work here. And quite a production line you have going - will tag along.
  20. Quick work! And looks good - nice patina on the black, and wheels up choice makes it look faster!
  21. Yes, curious indeed - they provided that double shot of the vacformed canopy - AND the resin buck. Their buck would have been perfect if they'd done a female vs male mould (or is it the other way round?) - which is what I think the pro vacformers like Rareplanes/Falcon etc normally do?
  22. That aluminium tape looks like useful stuff. Must get me some of that. Might I suggest that before sealing/varnishing/polishing that fine work - that you do a test vacform on something 'similar' with the alum tape in place? I'd be interested to see how the framing carries through the vacform? Exhibit 1 below is a very crisp canopy buck supplied with the Lifthere!/Aircast Resin 1/72 Ceres kit and THEIR resultant not-nearly-as-crisp vacform canopy. Perhaps their sucker lacked a bit of suck? Anyway - I sanded all the framing off the buck - did a new vac canopy and used paint to represent the framing (fine in 1/72).
  23. Hmmm - the SH engine looks rather blobbish compared to that sharp Small Stuff resin! But OK in 1/72 and hidden in the cowl. I have some of the Armory 3D 1/48 R-985's for 'other projects' and they too are a delight.
  24. Thanks Martin. Just do a google search on Powakits Auster J4 - and you should come up with some basic plans. Here's a PDF version I found (again) just now https://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showpost.php?p=19968641&postcount=7152
  25. Excellent progress! Don't worry - you are not alone in your araldite adventures. I have a love-hate relationship with araldite. Great for gluing mixed materials but I always seem to end up with sticky fingers and errant araldite on everything.
