  1. Thanks @vytautas! It's been my favourite and most successful armour build to date so far
  2. Also missed this first time round, glad to see it resurrected! Great work with scratch building.
  3. Afternoon Folks! Think this one is done. Edit. maybe not Please throw any feedback about the mud / weathering my way! For the tracks just opted for some pigment brushed into the recesses and along the edges. Liked how the textured mud deposits turned out around the hull. I don't feel like I got the colour quite right for the dry and wet mud, not enough contrast between the two... Didn't help that I also splashed around some dark earth pigment which had a much greener look compared to the orangy / red mud shades I'd used earlier. Here's how it's looking at the minute. The MG is precariously glued in place! Unlike the other metal work on the Stug, for the MG went with metallic gun metal dry brushed over black and have left it looking shinny. The fit of the top section over the compartment is great, so I've left it unglued so I can pop it off. Really like the interior being viewable through the open hatches. Oh blast. Antenna wires... Hmm I should probably have a bash at those given the work I've put into this build! I've got a nagging feeling that the top of the hull needs something else?? Maybe a slight dust wash in a few places? Thanks for swinging by Aaron and just spotted that the track needs gluing down to the return rolls again on one side!
  4. Morning Folks I think I'm calling it done (well apart from an antenna wire) With the gun staining and another crack at using pasteltle chalk, worked better this time. Still used the silicon pointed brush but wiped off excess pigment so it was more like drybrushing and built up the effect with a few passes. In hindsight with the exhaust I used the brush with too much pigment on it so it caked it on. Finished of the spinner, tidied up around the frame and here we are. I've got a couple of shelves to display my finished kits on, which had filled up so I've relegated some old builds to the attic. But freed up some space to plonk it next to the Spitfire. I'll get the antenna sorted out and then some more snaps for the gallery. As always, great GB! Although I think the only other GB I'll be joining this year is the Bristol Gb with a Tamiya Beaufighter. Need to make dent in the small stash! Thanks for stopping by Aaron
  5. Nice work on the chipping. There's an impressive amount of detail on that kit!
  6. I might follow suit unless I get any other input. Think black might blend in a bit to much with the sights / periscope bits (its to late in the day to figure out the correct terminology)
  7. Morning Folks I've been chipping away at this one on and off. Mix of brush and sponge. Should the padded bit on the commanders hatch be a black leather colour? Been mucking around with the rust colour set on the exhausts, hard to make it out from the phone but think it came out well. Was a bit of faff painting it with everything else glued around it so had to crack out the masking tape. With the exhaust it was initially painted a dark grey, follow by sponging on some off white and then and sponging with dark rust, in both cases used a fine brush to reach some places and neaten up the edges. Couple of random rust washes and splodges. And the tips of the exhaust had a tiny amount of neat black oil paint added before feathering slightly with some thinners. It's all been given a flat coat now as well. All the contact points on the tracks have been polished up with a chunky artist dark graphite pencil. And the teeth on the drive wheels have been chipped with a bit of metallic paint. Don't think I can put it off any longer... next for the mud! Thanks for swinging by Aaron
  8. Thanks @fmichelsen ! Realised I've not post an update in a few weeks, so grabbed the camera this morning for some progress shots. Done a spot of light chipping and scratches with some brushed on silver. Flat coated and then used some ground up pastel chalk for the exhaust stains. Used a silicon brush to apply the pigments and they'd ended up a bit to dense but not bad. Incidentally I found a set of assorted silicon brushes meant for nail art or such but a lot cheaper than the ones marketed for model making malarkey! Been throwing various rust shade washes at the exhausts, final step (hopefully) will be to lightly paint some black oil paint around the square exhaust nozzle bits and lightly feather it with some thinner. Needs some touching up around the canopy frames with the interior colour. And still planning on adding some African dust pigment to the wheels and walkway areas. Oh and gun stains, might try very very water thinned Tamiya paint with a spot of dishing washing soap.... The end is almost insight Thanks for swinging by!
  9. Been a bit more productive with trying to suss out applying mud! The LifeColor mud set arrived and first attempt at just using that set had me here... which is ok, but not quite what I had in mind. So next up, was doing the side. Watched a whole range of vids on YouTube for ideas over the weekend... Started with some Vallejo thick European mud following the suggestions from the others earlier. next I mixed a bit of vallejo dark earth pigment with lifecolor north Europe dry mud along with some Lifecolor south Europe mud paint - the idea of getting a shade for dried out mud. This applied over all the thick earth and blended a bit in places to try a get a thin dried mud effect. Lastly, mixed some Vallejo splashes European mud with lifecolor north Europe dark mud paint and added that to larger areas of mud build up to try and show lumps of wet large mud. The splashes seems to have a gloss finish to works well for the wet effect. Thinned that mix down and added a few splashes with a cocktail stick to blend it together a bit which left me here... Pretty pleased with so far! Thanks for the input so far folks, please keep it up! Remembered that I should get round to the chipping on the Stug before adding mud to it, so that's next on the cards. Aaron
  10. I have ages ago, can't remember how successful I was. I have recently just picked up a few silicon brushes for pigments on tanks, but could be a good shout for the exhaust stains. I have a feeling last time I tried with them I was a little heavy handed with them! Good idea, thanks 😊
  11. Cheers @PlaStix ! I caved in the end and ordered the LifeColor sets for Mud and Rust. The mud set has arrived so need to grab another other victim kit out and have a bash with it. The rust kit hasn't arrived yet, hopefully it'll turn up tomorrow when I'm not in work so I crack straight on with the tracks. The only vaguely productive thing I've done this week is started to poke a brush around the exhausts with so gray paint in prep for some rust. Aaron
  12. Decals are on now along with panel line washes. Used oils, payne's gray for the blue sections and burnt umber everywhere else. I need to practice mixing different oil colours as the burnt umber looks a tad dark. Do plan on adding a dusty oil wash around the wing roots and underside at some point. Probably another daft question - paynes gray always ends up with a blue hue after diluting (using Winsor Newton) Do I just need to mix a dab of black in with the grey with get the gray to look well gray and not blue gray? The Tamiya decals went on fine. I read a tip somewhere that mentioned in part the thickness issue is due to a think glue layer under the decal and that using very hot water helps. Not sure how accurate that is, but used plenty of hot water and micro set / sol and after the first coat gently prodded decals into panel lines with a cocktail stick. Just been painting up the prop hub then to assemble the spinner and mark it up for the red and white combo. Trying to decide how to tackle the weathering on this. Thinking: small amount of chipping around engine hatches. I have some Mig North Africa dust pigment which I'd bought for some armour kits but figure it can be well used around the wheels and wing root. With the exhaust stains, whenever I've tried to airbrush them on I always stuff it up. I might just try heavy thinning nato black to within an inch of it's life and slowly brush painting the stains on. Aaron
  13. Cheers @thorfinn @Col. ! Few days ago had another stab at the green, decided to go with the airbrush again. I did spend a while playing around with spraying some card and was able to get some nice fine spray lines. When it came to the model again it wasn't quite as successful. Better than last time for sure, but still had the odd paint flood and some splattering / overspray effect around the edges, particularly on the fuselage. All good practice I guess! Should get a coat of Klear on later today and can make a start on painting up some of the remaining bits.
  14. I'm still debating trying with airbrush. Will need to do a lot of practicing first, this time! I usually just use Klear to varnish, think I've got some tamiya acrylic gloss and some Mig Ammo varnish - but not sure if any of them would hold up to me brush painting mr hobby diluted with Self levelling thinner.
  15. Excellent stuff. Like the look of the scheme, I've got the same set if decals in 1/48 too so will it'll be on my to-do list
  16. Morning Folks I've still been mucking around with my previous Panther build experimenting with mud. The darker stuff is Vallejo Russian thick mud. I've then added some Mig Kursk soil over it in places. With the Kursk I've then tried to blending the edges using some white spirit and a brush. I'd say the contrast between the two shades is too much and I went overboard with the Russian thick mud in the first place! I do have some of the Vallejo European mud, which will hopefully look better when combined with the Kursk? Have had a rummage around and these are the bits that I currently have, if anyone can spot a good combination of these I'm all ears. I've not bothered ordering the LifeColor mud set, I'm sure I must be able to get something out of these! Also got a couple of oil tubes of various colours too. Cheers Aaron
  17. *Ding Ding* Round Two Spent yesterday starting the re-spray. Had a lot more success with the mottle coat for the undersides this time around so please with that improvement! Forget to take a photo after blending the blue and it's under masking at the moment. I think the issues I've been having with spraying where due to low pressure and not thinning the paint enough.... Dare I say I'm feeling slightly more confident about taking the olive green later. Annnnd top coat reapplied. With my first attempt I felt the sand brown was too dark, so this time around tried a different tactic. Added a first mottle coat using H-066, then added some XF-88 (dark yellow II) to the mix and applied that focusing in the middle of the panels. Then blended it by adding some more XF-88 to the mix and spraying thin coats. I think it looks ok, but maybe should have some more orange in there? Thoughts welcome and any suggestions for other RLM79 colours would be useful. I'm going to leave the masking in place and work on the olive green at some over this week with some look. I'm still a bit in two minds, I can try airbrushing again or I can go the brush painting route. But if brush painting will need to find a suitable acrylic to use as I found last time when brushing Mr Hobby over the MH sandy brown it softened the paint and became smudgy. Thanks for looking in.
  18. @PlaStix @Jasper dog Cheers for the pointers chaps. Before I'd seen your comments I had already had a crack at using the thick mud.... thankfully on a old build as I was very liberal with it I'll dig out another old build and have another go but this time being a bit more restrained! Ok, so the tracks are looking like this at the moment. As I'd already primed them brown I lightly sprayed some German grey over them to leave a bit of the brown tones showing through. Next I wanted to add some rust tones, so opted to use some AK weathering pencils that I have. Admittedly not an obvious choice but I don't have any rust coloured paints (well I do have two brown oil paints but seem to struggle getting the shades to look good - think I also need an orange oil at some point) Anyhow, weathering pencils - I've found that if you shave the tip you can make washes. Light rust worked well, but then the medium rust dried with some very pink deposits. Head scratching time, opted for covering it with some of the Ammo track wash and that's where I'm at with them now. I've been eyeing up a set of rust paints - mainly the ones from LifeColor. If anyone has any suggestions for other acrylic suggestions please chip in! I've also been looking at the LifeColor mud set and thinking I might get that two. Think I need a bit more variation in mud tones to add the two Vallejo ones I've got already. The decals are on, all five of them! It had occurred to me that decals over Zimmerit would loose their shape and I was not wrong! This one is the worst offender, but at least they've settled into the texture nicely after some prodding with Micro Set/Sol. I spotted the chat about the machine gunners hatch, I was able to prise it off mine and reposition it to look more accurate. Thanks for the tips there! Just need to add a oil wash to the underside bits to get them to match with the rest. And a couple of shots of the painted tools. While I Umm & Ahh about the rust paints I've got the periscopes and MG to paint up. I've been enjoying following along with the other builds, there's some great work going on.
  19. Not got a great deal done over the past week, in part due to being evicted from the kitchen and needing to set up shop in the spare room and also just throw a strop after stuffing up the camo on my 109 build, starting to get back into the swing of things again. Wheels completed and painted up the various tool bits. Currently pondering on how to paint the tracks. Last kit I used the Ammo dry earth track set and wasn't too happy with the results - if anyone has any pointers for using the set please shout out. I had used the brown primer, then track wash followed by a dry brush the polished metal. I just felt that with the brown primer the tracks looks a bit off and completely rusted / more of an abandoned look. Ooo and another question... Has anyone used Vallejo thick mud or splash mud? Any tips? TIA Aaron
  20. I've just about stopped sulking now Stripped some more of the gunk off with SLT and re-primed it this afternoon. The finish is still a bit shoddy in places as it didn't strip all the paint. If nothing else it'll be good airbrushing practice rather than a waste of a kit....
  21. Painting was a complete disaster couldn't figure out what I was doing wrong. Had a bit of sheet plastic that I was testing on and thing seemed reasonable. But when it came to painting the 109 couldn't control the paint that we'll. Was shooting at around 10psi with a 0.2 needle. Tried different pressures and paint dilutions. The biggest issue seemed to be that when the paint started to spray it would slightly flood the area creating an obvious circle. The airbrush had been stripped down and cleaned and added a few drops of oil to improve the trigger action as it seemed a bit jerky. (Mmmm jerky) Then tried stippling the paint on with a trimmed down brush. Used q bit of SLT to dilute as normal and it melt the earlier paint work and made a right mess. With the airbrush creating small circular floods it had created an obvious paint bump / ripple. So at this point in full of strop mode decided to strip it back so that I could reprime and start again. So SLT and kitchen paper came out and managed to make it into massive gunky mess. Fairly safe to say it's trashed and has been placed in the cupboard of shame. If anyone can recommend something that's good to strip the remaining paint off I'll consider starting again. I was recently was given the ICM 1/32 Gladiator which I was tempted to start last night as an alternative for the GB. But feeling a tad disheartened after butching the 109. Also not sure if I have a suitable paint for the interior as it calls for taniya XF5 and I just have some US and later(?) British interior green.
  22. Cheers folks! The camo was a bit patchy in places so I've neaten it up with a hairy stick and thinned paint. So it's looking a lot better. It's been given a couple of coats of Klear in prep for some washes. The past few days have involved this.... Wheels. Wheels as far as the eye can see.
  23. Evening all Been getting some paint on the Bf 109 over the past few days. Primed with some Mr Mahogany 1000 (had wanted some black primer but wasn't in stock) Underside has been sprayed with Mr Hobby Light Blue H418. Tried doing a mottle coat over the brown primer for some various but wasn't that successful. Top coat was using H066 sandy brown, tried the a mottle coat again and had more luck with some tonal variation. After finishing, felt the H066 looks too dark. Didn't have a vast amount of colours to choose from but mixed some H066 with Tamiya XF60 Dark Yellow which was heavily thinned and applied. Remembered to take a progress shot at this point to show the difference. Here a few pics once I'd finished the re-spraying Think the colour looks better, but still not quite right. Next up is trying to free hand spray the green over this
  24. Ah. I used Tamiya XF-88, should it have been XF-60? Dark Green XF-61 and Red Brown XF-64 were used too. It'll be getting a few washes to bring out the zim texture, so with luck that'll getting it looking a bit closer.
