Fonderie Miniatures' 1/48th Halifax BIII
npb748r replied to tomprobert's topic in Work in Progress - Aircraft
lovely - watching this with fondness - my dad spent a few years sitting in the rear turret of one of those over Europe, India and Burma between 1944 and 1946 (mark A.VII though). I have one of these kits in my stash and since he died (5 years ago now) I've been pulling it out looking at it, shuddering and putting it back, lacking the courage to attempt the build. I'm enjoying your build and looking forward to it progressing, keep going. neil -
I like their marketing of paints packaged for a subject so have used them more than any other brand. I've had one issue of paint being taken off by tamiya tape but that was my fault for not priming that particular build. Coverage has always been good with the exception of their very light sky blue recently used on my Ukrainian mig-29 which took about 6 or 7 coats and I still wasn't happy. Then I realised it looked like I had pre-shaded (when I hadn't) so incorporated it into my weathering effects !

thanks Marco, they are great pictures and better than anything I found. In the end I made the rear shelf look busy with scratch built boxes and wires, not accurate but better than the nothing provided in the kit. I think the finished kit is impressive and makes me realise how good looking the aircraft is in real life.

I have and it's ok, couldn't tell the difference between that and red line paint.

It has the opposite impact on me, this is such an ugly plane. I'll be getting one though, ugly or not !

thanks all, I still haven't found any consistent or clear photos but I think the empty deck area on the trumpeter kit is incorrect. I also looked at aftermarket resin bits for 1/48 and 1/72 aircraft and scratch built some boxes and wires. The canopy is glued shut now and it looks better having something on the shelf. I'm now using the photos from the above links as reference for painting. What I find fascinating is that apart from the APU exhausts these aircraft remain remarkable clean, even after a decade of flying. That will make weathering a quick process ! Thanks once again for the help. neil

thanks - good thread with lots of details but doesn't cover my issue. I can see from that thread that this is an area of uncertainty as a few other people had posted asking for info or photos in that thread without reply. Worse case I'll make something up based on the after market resin for those areas but I'm not sure how accurate that will be due to the mixed photos of the real aircraft.

I'm working my way quickly through the 1/32 trumpeter typhoon kit and could do with some help and advice. It's big plane with relatively low part count when you ignore the avionic bays, engine detail and most of the weapons. One area where I'm struggling is the detail behind the ejector seat under the canopy. The trumpeter kit has this area as just a ridged shelf affair and looking at the relatively few pictures on-line I can find pictures that align with how Trumpeter have modelled it. However I noticed on Revell builds of the typhoon that they have a different set up with boxes and a cylinder structure immediately behind the seat. Again, I can find some pictures on line of the real aircraft that support this. I've also found a few photos of aircraft with just cylinder structure but at a different angle. So I'm now really confused and the low number of decent and clear pictures that I can find of that area on real aircraft isn't helping. I was rather hoping that there would be a few Eurofighter experts on here who may be able to help clear some of my fogged up brain !!! Thanks in advance of any help Neil

I haven't built anything other than 1/32 aircraft for decades but this will cause me to have a slight alteration. I suspect it might be the start of a 1/48 bomber shelf - oh dear, my poor wallet.

your photo is a mirror image of my own Christmas around the same time and with the same B-29 as a present from Santa !! Happy days and the start of a life long kit bashing path!

that would be great news, I could build my dads aircraft from 298 squadron. I've had the FM kit in the stash for about a decade and never plucked up the courage to start it ! Hopefully it would be followed by a 1/32 version !

Looking forward to getting these. I know little about the actual aircraft but I really like the look of it. I also know nothing about the history around the UN planes so I'm looking forward to not only building but also learning. -

It's perfect Jon. Once again thank you for dedicating the build to HMS Mourne and her crew, especially my uncle. You did them proud with such as great build. thanks neil -
Great to see your back with this, I've missed your updates

nope, you are wrong, not blasphemy at all ! As someone who lives across the pond I'm with you, much prefer the hurricane to the spitfire, doesn't get the recognition it should have and is a better looking aircraft in my view. Any room under that Texas stone for an extra one ??

I now have a set of RAAF decals from the revell F/A-18F hornet kindly donated by a member of this forum.

I've got the Brian Lavery book which has lots of general stuff in but not much on Mourne. Those depth charges would be beyond my eyes/fingers capabilities - good luck with them !!! I'm sitting on the 1/350 Sterling Models River class kit but haven't had the courage to start it yet. I'm a 1/32 aircraft modeller - dropping down to 1/350 is scary plus I've never built a resin kit before, the closest I've been is sticking tiny bits of resin onto 1/32 plastic kits. Really enjoying the build, it's a nice feeling to see HMS Mourne in the title of your post and the ship coming to life. neil

Name the Royal Naval Air Station and the Year?
npb748r replied to Uncle Dick's topic in Aircraft Cold War
I'm certain it's Portland, I spent every year of my childhood holidaying in Weymouth during the 60's and 70's. It was my version of paradise - Bovingdon tank museum, Portland RN base and up the road my dads old WW2 airfield Tarrant Rushton. I would agree early 70's. Neil -
I had originally wondered about the ship having been recently repainted, although the picture was taken only a year after launch and it's weathered so I discounted that. Couldn't think of any other reason other than censorship. The photos on the IWM site are the same as those my nan had with all of his paperwork so I assume they were public domain during the war. I don't know how to post pictures but the one titled interior study on board a frigate (cat number A 17877) has my uncle in it, he's the one sitting down writing in a pad.
