  1. Hey Everyone!
Here's my latest video, a simple film that shows how to mask some straightforward shapes on a model aircraft. It's not groundbreaking as such, but will show you how I do things for Model Airplane International projects and in particular, the very new Great Wall Hobby T-33 Shooting Star, which I will show you once complete in a week or so's time.
I hope that you like it! :)

  2. All done!

The end of the week and that's my second Eduard kit completed in the last fortnight, this time their truly beautiful Messerschmitt Me109G-6, here seen in the somewhat speculative colours of Kurt Gabler's 'Mosquito Chaser', Red 8. This is Eduard's interpretation of Red 8. I say interpretation, because the scheme has been speculated over for years, the consensus being that it was a standard G-6 that had had it's paint sanded off to reveal the underlying metal (with all of the scruffiness that that would have created!). There is talk of paint remaining - particularly on the wings - and also that it may have been finished in primer - both of which seem feasible to me! But this is what Eduard suggest and as I am building the model from the box using their decals, I decided to go with it, the resulting model being rather striking with a bare metal fuselage and painted wings...

I love this kit and really enjoyed putting it together - it's every bit the equal of Eduard's superlative Spitfire range. Will I build another? You bet!

    I hope you like it!

  3. Hi everyone - thanks for the comments! I'm working on the design and content of Issue 3 at the moment, but have to say early on that I have no plans to expand the scope to feature anything other than aircraft. There are plenty of magazines out there that cover these subjects, so I don't want to tread on their toes too much. So, for the moment I'll stick with aircraft and then maybe work on additional releases if I get the inspiration and time to look at other areas.

    Cheers!

  4. Well, at the risk of sounding picky... (what, on Britmodeller? ;-)) IMHO (absolutely...) the logotype looks confused to me. The sans-serif fonts make the letters more like shapes, ramming them together with no leading like that hampers the readability no end, and you don't know whether to read the W and M as two letters or a reflection. It's not like it ends up with a particularly striking shape either -- the "COLD WAR MOD" is a big jagged-edged block. If it were me (which I completely accept that it ain't) I'd use the dark blue for "Cold War" and see how that looks, or risk building the odd tank and drop the "AIRCRAFT" bit for a nice solid COLD WAR MODELLER block...

None of which will stop me welcoming Issue 3 to add to my shelf with the other two, obviously...

    bestest,

    M.

Thanks for the comments - most interesting. Having read what you wrote, I've taken another look and simplified it further. Here's what I came up with - I won't keep tweaking it, but maybe now it's easier to read... :)

  5. Hey everyone!

So, following on from the weekend's shenanigans, I've spent a few hours this evening working on the cover template. Though I had this on my laptop, it was proving troublesome to export it onto my desktop, so I took the opportunity to completely rebuild the file, clean up the logo and all of the text. As before, the cover is simple and in-keeping with the looking of the contents. Once again, this is a practice run, but I'm happy with it - see what you think.

  6. Hello everyone!

Three years ago I created a couple of my own books and then two editions of an independent magazine that I designed and then had printed in town. The plan was always to try and release some more magazines, but time has never been on my side and though constantly asked when I would, only two issues have so far seen the light of day. So, as this is an itch that I can't seem to scratch, I've decided to work on a third edition of Cold War Aircraft Modeller and though I have no concrete plans regarding content, have spent a few days getting to grips with what I need to do, to reproduce the look and feel of issues 1 & 2. As before, I've gone for a really clean look, using non-modelling titles as my inspiration. These are not set in stone - nor are they representative of actual content - being simply my own practice pages to learn the program and are most likely to change - but at least I've made a start! As for when this will see the light of day, we'll have to wait and see...

  7. This has to be the best built Revell Shackleton previewed on this site so far, the weathering is spot on...............however, I do have one complaint!!!!!!!! :jump_fire: 3 three photos does NOT do this build justice....................... :fight: Can we have a lot more pictures of this superb build Spence :wow:

You'll have to buy the magazine! There's a 12 page feature on this build in the March issue of Model Airplane International - you'll find around 70 pictures in that!

All the best - Spence :)

  8. Spence,

Excellent work, absolutely beautiful. may I be so bold as to ask a few questions please. Firstly I purchased the February issue of SAMI last week as they had this kit's picture on the front cover, anyone who has ever read any of my posts here on BM will know that I am barmy on AEW aircraft and have been awaiting a kit of the Shack AEW Mk.2 for a long time. The SAMI pictures and article were in fact very disappointing as there was not a single build picture. Just lots of finished model pics against a blue background that really didn't come out well. I'm really hoping that your article has some build sequence pictures (please). Also the SAMI Shack was a test shot, is yours a final production version with production decals?

I'm also really hoping that you'll make some comparison build comments here on BM. I went to Telford in November with the intention of buying the Airfix Shack and using the Aeroclub conversion set to do an AEW version. Then I saw the Revell exhibition model and sprues on their stand and was smitten by the exquisite surface detail and decided to save my money and wait for the Revell release which hopefully will be this month. Strangely some commentators have had a go at the Revell kit having faults even before the model has been released, personally I believe my own eyes and will make my choice on what folks like yourself who will have actually built both of the kit have to say. So please be frank when you have built the Airfix example and guide us towards the correct choice (as I am sure you will have unbiased views).

Next those prop tips, do Revell provide prop decals in the kit, I sincerely hope so as I am in the middle of masking off the props on my MR Mk. 3 FROG Shack model and it is becoming a right pain, so fingers crossed.

I think your comments about the overwhelming interest in your Shack build in Social Media say it all, yes there is massive interest and I think a lot of people have held fire on a purchase waiting for the Revell AEW version. Especially as the Airfix Reps at Telford were very reticent regarding the release of an AEW version! Which was very strange as they have included all that AEW Radar Console detail in the fuselage (that cannot be seen without hacking holes in the side of the model as Airfix did at Telford) yet the kit they released represents a MR version.

Well many congratulations on your terrific build again and I for one cannot wait for the magazine article to come out.

    Cheers

    Ian

Hi Ian. This model is indeed built from a test-shot that was supplied by Revell along with a set of the decals that will be supplied in the kit. I have built it for my feature in the March issue of Model Airplane International and as such, it features well over 60 photographs - 40-odd of which cover the construction and painting of this model - spread over 12 pages of the magazine and the front cover. I have also gone into detail as to how the model goes together and how you can get the best from the parts and decals supplied. As for the prop tips, they are not supplied on the decal sheet, so need to be masked and painted...

I mentioned that I am also building the Airfix kit and I am comparing the two, the second in-depth feature following closely the format of the first, ready to be published in the April issue. Hopefully, they'll be no glitches along the way!

Thanks very much for taking the time to comment on this model and I hope that the features answer the questions that you have about both kits!

All the very best - Spence :)
