  1. My current build in the Tornado GB is drawing to a close so it was time to decide on the next project. I've had a couple of Trumpeters Mig-23/27 in the stash for a while now and previously built their Mig-23MF which I really enjoyed. I like the look of the BN and the 27 but not the Trumpeter interpretation! So I got hold of the Cold War Studios correction set. I've also recently got some interesting decals for Syrian Migs as I like the idea of doing a war weary weathered example.

The CWS set is the updated version which appears to have an improved nose with finer panel lines and cleaner molding. The fuselage parts remain the same and aren't as crisply molded so it'll involve a bit of cleaning up. I did consider a compromise of only using the nose from the CWS set as the clear parts are going to need a lot of work. But when you look at the difference in shape and size of the kit canopy and the CWS parts I've decided to do the whole conversion.

Looking at the pic's Des, I would say Stbd 2250 was an F3 in LAG and the Prt one an ex Telic GR4 tank in ARTF as the base colour at the front   is similar to the kite. 🤔Maybe h147 is a close match for ARTF then. It just seems very light.

I'm curious about the pic's. Were they taken from the crash gate next to the UETF on the northern side of the airfield?

Definately not Light Aircraft Grey, it was only an under surface colour on the F3. The tanks were the main camo colour of Camo grey (known as Barley Grey then) or MSG later in service.

I used the quick-boost seats in mine and I'm quite impressed with the pit. I'm almost ready to paint but I'm confused about the paint call-out . It's hinting H147 which is a very light grey and is what  I normally use for brit undercarriage but I'm sure it's MSG.........unless the ARTF was lighter. Anyone know any different? I'm also hoping and praying that the A/M chaps get round to making 1/32 Brimstones and launch rack. I'm sure there's a scratch for them  on another site but can't find it . For the ex plumbers amongst you. How close are the hellfire and Brimstone?

Here’s a brief discussion on the forum from a few years ago which might help..........

I’d say ARTF grey was a lighter grey than MSG too, don’t know anything about humbrol colours as I don’t use them so can’t comment on H147.

  4. Long overdue an update.................

Near the finish line and where I always slow to a snails pace! I managed to get hold of a Master pitot (they seem to have been in short supply up until recently) and it's now fitted, still needs some paint on it. Undercarriage and doors are on as well as the after burner cans and thrust reverse doors.

According to the latest Hannants newsletter this  kit is now being discontinued by Revell.

Noticed that on their email, I assume that means this is the end of the run for this boxing but doesnt mean they wont release another boxing in the future?🤷‍♂️

  6. Think the Revell kit is widely regarded as the best going, although it may have issue with the radome shape. Theres aftermarket resin radome for it. I've built the Hasegawa kit many, many years ago which is also good but maybe hard to come by now.

Whichever one you go for there both GR1's so you'll need a FLIR sensor for the port side of the forward lower fuselage.

Agreed but then I thought that if the kit had included 1500lt tanks, there would be a temptation to build a GR1 but then I considered the need for a decal sheet with stencils for a DG/OG camouflaged jet and the only way you can get that is with a Revell sheet and the Revell kit is pretty good so I'd be loathe to split the Revell decals from the plastic, hence either Hannants do a huge decal sheet with stencils our Italeri do a re-box as a GR/IDS with appropriate decals! The only 'teeny' pity is that the nose halves don't have an option for a 1a/4a sensor window on both sides or the bulge on the underside but then the windows could just be masked and painted on or drilled out and filled with clear styrene so just 'basic' modelling!

I’m just finishing the Revell 1/48 kit and didn’t think I’d want to start another Tornado but this kit is making me! It’s an old cliche but think I will hold off and wait and see what aftermarket items are released (Quinta Studios cockpit?), as you say the TIRRS pack would be great, CBLS pods and I imagine a few company’s will release decals.

Sounds like you know your stuff Muzz - do you think anything’s missing? I’m gradually taking the view that this is best built as a GR.4 (funny that) and I suspect an IDS/GR.1 and even an F.3 may be in the offing later!!

I've not had a proper look at the plastic yet but nothing I can see is missing, 1500lt tanks would have been good and maybe some BOL rails but that would just really be the icing on the cake.
