  1. EDIT:  Buddy is making some masks on his cricket machine.   THinks his stuff will be less tacky.  So we'll see what happens.

    Original:

Not sure I will get this done.  About had it with this one.   After dealing with the stars/bars in the wrong spot, replacements not settling well or getting all crinkly with Microsol (even the originals got crinkly) I decided to try Maketar Masks.   Never use that product again.  You get one chance to place it and if you are just slight off and need to adjust you are hosed, it all falls apart trying to pull it up and reposition.  So their claim to be used over and over is highly misleading.......IN MY OPINION.

Thought maybe I try a 3rd brand of stars/bars.......this time from CAM Decals and their sizes are just all wrong, so that sheet is useless.

Plus I lose 8-9 days on vacation, so that doesn't help the battle.

Had no problem with the Superscale stars/bars on the the A-36.   Even tried Superscale on the 2nd attempt on this P-51B.  Been very hard not to smash this thing into the wall.

  2. I don't think I will ever (or try to) use them again.  You get one chance to place it.  If you are off just a bit you are hosed because it never peels off right.  Their claim that it can be used over and over again is highly misleading.

    #3 ruined.............scratch that #4 ruined.

  3. Thanks Dennis, that makes more sense to me.   I was just trying to follow the instructions............yeah I know, a guy following instructions.  Geesh!  The marking of the mask is a good idea too.  Should of thought of something like that.  In woodworking we draw a triangle across all the pieces when doing a glue up to make 1 panel outta many boards.  I'll see what happens tonight!

  4. After fighting Star n Bar decals on my P-51B, I decided to rip them off and use some mask sets I got from Maketar.  I don't know if Eaglestrike Decals aren't that good, if my MicroSol is bad (both bottles), or what.  They are not settling worth a darn.  If I add a little more Microsol to try and get them to settle they end up just staying all crinkly.  Built plenty of models in the past, never had this kinda issue.  Superscale ones I used on my A-36 didn't have a problem.  Couple applications of Microsol and they were fine.  Two sets of stars and bars from Eagle Strike that go to poo.  Every other part of the sheet I have used has been fine.

Anyway, I am trying to wrap my head around these Maketar Masks and I am stumped.  Doesn't seem straight forward to me.  So on the crude instructions on the back, they show the round US star, white back ground, blue star and red dot in the center.  The instructions show, running a piece of tape across to hold everything in place.  Then painting white, then paint the blue star and then paint the red center.  So to me, that means place the outer mask on the plane and paint the white.  Overlay the parts still stuck to the tape that keeps everything in register and pull off the outer strip to reveal the area to be painted blue.

I have now ruined two masks because things don't release right.   Like something wasn't aligned, so I peeled it back off and it wanted to leave part of the mask there.  Just ended up walking away for the night because now I am just PO'd at the whole thing.  I don't really see any YouTube videos, or talk anywhere about using them in any great depth.  Just, yeah I used masks posts and that's it.

Anyone have any tips/thoughts?  Apparently I am too stupid to use these things.

    Thanks as always!

  5. Progress continues...........

Got the wrong stars and bars off and things touched up but no new pics of that.   Nothing really to show from the above pics.   Also got some work done on the spinner/blades including the overspray.  Even put on these little details like in the photograph.  They are close and will get the job done.

Fox (The Fox, HO-Z) was another P-51B/C from the 487th FS (Flying Scot II is from the 486th FS).  Haven't read any detals on The Fox.  The little cheat sheet in the back of the 352nd FG book doesn't say anything about being lost.   Not sure what 472 would be.

  6. Toryu, Johnson, Redstaff.....

Thanks for the suggestions!   Would of never thought to tackle it that way.  None of the decals have been sealed yet.  Not sure I can get to it tonight as I have to run a long errand tonight after work, but I will see what I can do and report back.

Sad thing is, I sat there pondering which size goes where.  Guess I am a little rusty after quite a few years off building.

  7. HELP!!!!   What would you do?  I done screwed up both the A-36 and Blue Nosed P-51B.  This big dummy got the stars and bars in the opposite places.   Larger ones on the fuselage but not quite done yet on the wings.

On the A-36 I have the small ones on the wings and no stars n bars on the fuselage.  Had some weird reaction to the solvaset.  So the fuselage stars n bars have been pulled off, sanded and repainted.  Didn't have some fancy weathering/preshading anyway so it was an easy fix.  Would have to pull the wing ones off, but then again paint touch up is easy.

On the P-51B.  I don't have the wing stars n bars on.  The Fuselage decals are basically done.   Explains why I thought it was so crowded.  To me this is model is the bigger issue as it's NMF and the white is already done for the Dday stripes......but mainly trying to fix the NMF.  Decals never come off easily.

Trying to decide.  I lose the whole first week of March with a vacation.

When looked again at the photo I thought you were right and I had to go and check, but it's just an optical illusion caused by the lighting angle and background.

I believe he was referring to the doors on the landing gear itself.  The little curved portion at the bottom should be pointing to the front.

  10. Progress continues!  Got the name plate panels re-metalized although you can kinda see where the edge of the blue was.  Hopefully the name will distract from it enough.  On the DDay stripes I tried to make the edges looks not so neat.  I tried lightly scoring some Tamiya tape, then ripping it the rest of the way trying to make some jagged/uneven edges.  Not sure it really worked.  Some were to heavy so I touched them up  Judging by the B&W picture, to me it looks like only the black stripes had been applied to the underside of the wings so that's how she is.  Now I have to do the same on the flaps, which could be interesting as I spilled most my Tamiya White on the floor today.  Wonder how close Model Master Enamel White is to Tamiya white.  Probably can't tell a difference.  It's either that or take a 45 min trip to the hobby shop.

Have you applied the name decal yet? If not, how about just spraying that part in matching bare metal and applying the decal?

If you do, be real careful masking the blue. If it's been applied over the Alclad, the blue might peel away with the masking tape.

Decal has not been applied, so hopefully I can just mask carefully, sand the ridge a little, paint gloss black and redo the Alclad.

Just been one of those weeks I guess.

  12. Well, at least this went good tonight!  Ever have one of those nights where you probably shouldn't be at the modeling bench?  Well that was tonight.  Fortunately though the Blue Nosed B finally got it's blue nose.  Judging by the B&W above, maybe it should be lighter, but this is what we are going with.  Started with Floquil's German Imperial Infantry Blue and lightened it with Model Master White.  Who knows the ratios.

A question, now that I've completely stripped the propeller and propeller cone.   What do you prime resin with?  Masked the tips on the blades, pulled the tape off and it went down to clear resin.  Alclad and Mr Surfacer 1500 Black were gone.  Had this problem once before with Mr Surfacer and resin.  Pretty sure it 1500 Black as well.  Do I dare pull out a jar on Model Master Primer use that and then wait 16 centuries for it to cure?

  13. Work continues on the Blue Nosed B of Bodney.  NMF is getting closer.  Think I'm gonna tweak the gun bay door color a little just to add something, although a lot of it will be covered by DDay stripes.  Some things could be better, but hey, it's been a while since I've completed a kit.

Fuselage:  Alclad Duraluminum over Mr Color GFX2

Wings:  Alclad White Aluminum over Mr Surfacer 1500 Black

Lost track of all the different colors used on the different panels/stabs/ailerons/etc.  Might darken the panel around the exhausts just a tad.  Doesn't seem dark enough.

If you go back to the B&W photo of what I am attempting, the DDay stripes were in progress and the D of the code had not been moved forward yet.  So I need to modify the Eagle Strike decals.  Threw them in photoshop, tweaked and printed.  I think I got close.  The only thing that concerns me is the red on the originals probably had white printed first before the red.  Hoping it works ok.

    Modified decals....

    Decal Modifications

So now, what blue (or mixture) to use.  As you can see in the photo above, it looks highly faded.

    So below from left to right;

    1)  Floquil Imperial German Uniform Blue (suppose to be close to the late war blue used on Blue Nosers).   This actually misted over the silver and not fully covered looked pretty faded.  May have to try a mist coat version.

    2)  XtraColor True Blue.  Maybe with some white mixed it, it wouldn't be bad.

    3)  Model Master Enamel True Blue

You guys are killing me with all these GB's!   Guess I can't stop myself but I am going to enter with.................

    1/48 Hasegawa F6F-3

CAM Decals (not sure which bird yet)

    True Details Cockpit

    Ultracast Wheels

Ok, I lied!   In doing some web surfing today I found the scheme I had to do.  So I am switching to the...............Eduard F6F-3 1/48 Profipack.  Didn't want to buy a new kit, but the scheme is on the decal sheet for this kit and I like unusual schemes.
