  1. Thanks guys.  Interesting ideas. Never heard of the Flitzer, now one to me.

Think it's a matter of kit availability also, but I'll check out a few of those already mentioned.  The Komet looks like a good shout (totally forgot about that aircraft), as far as I've read it was in production, with 370 being made, and even saw service, Special Hobby do one in 1/72 and it's currently dirt cheap, and easy to paint, with the paint options in the kit being all aluminium (would have to find out if that means NMF or aluminium dope, or something else though) rather than the usual mottle camo the Germans tended to use...

  2. Thanks guys.

    Excellent model and excellent mounting

To be honest I'm not all that happy with the mounting.  I can't seem to manage to get a nice curve in the acrylic rods, I use a heat gun and I mostly seem to end up with a bend at a 90 degree angle.  Plus I like to not photograph the MDF base, but couldn't really get away with not doing so with this model.

Happy-ish but just feel it could be better.

  3. Hey all

Completed my 1./72 Revell Horten Ho 229 today, and I'm thinking about, in the future, what to build to go with it.

Due to a lack of space, where possible I have started to display my jet aircraft models in an upright position, on acrylic rods shoved into the exhausts, with the rods attached to a MDF base.  I usually put two related models on each base, so for example a F-14 Tomcat and an A-4 Skyhawk, or a Mig-21 and (when I've built it) a Mig-23, or a DH Vampire and an EE Lightning, or a F9F Panther and (when I've built it) a F-86 Sabre.

Struggling to think what I could put with my Horten Ho 229, besides a Me 262 or at a stretch a Gloster Meteor.

Anyone here any ideas on this?

    Thanks in advance.

  4. Kit Manufacturer: Revell.

    Scale: 1/72.

Paints used: Gunze, couple of Tamiya and Vallejo.

    Clear coats: Tamiya semi gloss.

Weathering products - a clay wash overall.

Aftermarket - acrylic rod and MDF base.

I've had this kit "in progress" since February.  Lost interest/enthusiasm and then lost it even further upon the outbreak, finally got back to finishing it off last week and this week...

I built one of these a few years ago, ended up accidentally breaking it irreparably and had to chuck it.  So I thought I'd have another go.  This time it turned out better than my original, plus I stuck acrylic rod up the exhausts, something which I didn't do first time around, the plan for that was to make it easier to photograph, although due to the shape of this aircraft it's not an easy subject to photograph imo.

There are actually 2 colours of grey on the topside, Gunze RLM 75 and 74, in a splinter camo type of pattern.  Although you can't really tell.  Not sure why as my original attempt at this kit had the exact same paints on and the two topside greys contrasted much more, unless I actually used a different grey to one of the ones I used on this build.

There is also some preshading that I managed to be semi-successful with for a change, it's better on the underside than the top.  Not that you can see that in my photos either...

Canopy didn't fit, I knew from my previous build that would be the case, so I did my best to mitigate that.  It looks worse to the mk1 eyeball than it does in my photos, for a change...

I was going to use some aftermarket gun barrels, by Master, because they have the correct muzzle brakes on them, however for some reason the resin they used for the muzzle brakes was a bit "bendy" and I ended up making a mess of the entire implementation of those parts so I ended up going with the kit parts instead, although I would have liked to drill holes in the ends, but the pieces are far too small for me to do that...

I also wanted to put a couple of swastikas on the "tail", because the example in the Smithsonian has two on there, although apparently they were applied after it was captured.  I couldn't find my Techmod decal sheet anyway, so I ended up not putting said markings on.

    Thanks for looking.

  5. Nice fence.  Oh look there's also a helicopter.   😁

I had the Police chopper hovering around right over my house the other week (presumably looking for sunbathers in their gardens), can't have been any more than 150-200 ft above the ground.  I tried taking a few photos and videos with my mobile, it was closer than that Chinook, but the photos and videos still turned out like yours - damn Moto G3 with only a 4x zoom!!

  6. Danish Lynx is a Mk90.

This thread may help with your cockpit -

I was doing some research on making a (now abandoned idea) 1/48 Airfix Navy Lynx into a Brazilian Navy Lynx (very similar to the Danish Lynx as far as I could tell) and found that the photoetch sets by Eduard were possibly not the best route for doing the IP and interior due to the need to cut "bitsa" this and "bitsa" that off each IP, best to cut up the decals as you can make a "bitsa" cockpit out of them far easier.  Would take both Eduard PE sets in 1/48 to do the job.

    YMMV in 1/32 of course.

  7. I had the new Italeri kit.  It did look nice in the box.  But it has raised RAM panel lines.

Problem with most kits is either the decals for the RAM tape are the wrong colour unless you want to depict an early F-35B (Hasegawa's being a prime example) or the RAM tape areas are raised.  Haven't seen one built yet but the Academy offering does look like it might be better in both those areas.

EDIT - spoke too soon.  The RAM tape decals look to be the wrong colour (more like Hasegawa's offering) for current RAM tape in the images on 1999.co.jp - https://www.1999.co.jp/eng/image/10679131

  8. I've done a couple of race car models in the past, and failed miserably at them to be honest.  Just can't make them look good.  One was a Matchbox 1/32 Porsche 917/10 Can Am car, the other was an Airfix 1/32 Porsche 917, neither are great kits to start with...

My problem is that I want a race car kit, in 1/20 to 1/32 scales, that I can lift all the body panels off to reveal pretty much everything that would be underneath on the real car.  Thing is, my budget doesn't stretch much past "kerb side" Italeri/Fujimi/Hasegawa/Tamiya kits, certainly not to Model Factory Hiro prices, and even Model Factory Hiro cars aren't quite what I'd like.

Plus race cars tend to be white or other "difficult" colours to paint.

Why is building a race car kit to the level I want so difficult?

    ☹️

  9. Vallejo do a reasonable (to me) set of Africa/MTO paints.  Model Air 71.031 for the middle stone, and 71.323 for the BS Dark Earth (I think, although they do another dark earth 71.029), forget what number the Azure blue is...

I used them on my Hasegawa 1/48 Hurricane Mk II D, ignore the fact that I have the colours the wrong way round for the camo pattern (and the tailwheel is also the wrong way round (Hasegawa's fault there, it doesn't fit the correct way round))...

  10. Hey all

Just sizing up my options for my next build once I get my current WIP air plane done...

I have the Academy 1/72 A-10A kit, I also have the Italeri 1/72 A-10A/C kit.

Initially I planned on building the Academy kit, in the "lizard" scheme, and robbing a few of the weapons from the Italeri kit.  However I'm leaning towards doing a grey 'hog now, mostly because it looks like less of a pita to mask up or do freehand with an airbrush.

So, I'm wondering, were any A-10A's painted in the grey scheme, and did any have the warthog nose art?  Could I get away with painting the Academy kit's subject on the decal sheet in the grey scheme rather than the "lizard" scheme without the excuse of "artistic license"?

    Thanks in advance.

  11. Ah, yes.  I'd have to either fill the rivets on the Eduard parts or rivet the Airfix parts, the former being an easy job with perfect plastic putty.  If I am just using the Airfix wings I might be inclined to not rivet them at all and leave it all as is.

Panel line quality I guess would also be a factor, especially if I grafted on the Eduard VIII nose.

Guess I'll have to see when/if I actually get around to buying both kits, at the worst I'll have a XIX and VIII...

At least I now know, again, where to start.

  12. Thanks guys.

Looking at Jim Kiker's thread I could probably use the Airfix XIX, just chop off the nose section and replace that with the Eduard VIII nose section, and (not knowing what parts come with the Airfix kit) use the Eduard VIII rudder, clear parts for the canopy, and prop also?  Or even easier, just put the Airfix wings on the Eduard VIII and add in any missing holes/panels for cameras?  Seems very easy to do, surely it can't be that easy (would just have to source an aftermarket deeper chin part)?

    And...

...I found the thread with all the photos and details that I had read previously, should have used Google first instead of the search function on here -

  13. Hey all

For a while I've had an urge to build a Spitfire PR XI.  I'm sure I've seen a thread on here about building one from currently available kits in 1/48 scale, and I'm sure there was/is a thread with tons of PR Spit photos, but I cannot find the thread via the search function (probably because I'm useless).

I'd like to build one that looks like PL965, as I like the look of that variant.  I'm not too keen on the later Griffon powered variant that Airfix did a kit of.

So, as summer is approaching (and hoping some kind of, even just a little, normality will return), and it's the 80th anniversary of the Battle of Britain (not that PR XI's flew during the BoB) I thought I'd start on trying to move this idea forwards...

Anyone here know what kit I could start with (I think Eduard's Mk VIII has been mentioned in the thread I saw?), and what to buy or what to do to the base kit to turn it into a PR XI?

I think I read somewhere, besides cameras (which I think there's a resin kit for) the wings are the biggest issue, with filling of panel lines and scribing of new panel lines and some lumps/bumps adding/removing?

Could I, to make life really simple, cross-kit an Airfix PR XIX with an Eduard Mk VIII?

    Thanks in advance.

  14. Hey all

I've got a Harder and Steenbeck Ultra, with both .2 and .4 needles/nozzles.  Recently I feel like I've been having a problem with it.

    3 things really.

    1.  The trigger feels stiff.

    2.  I often get the air running on and have to pull the trigger up.

    3.  I seem to have to draw the trigger back quite a bit before I get any paint flow.  It makes putting down a little paint, for panel fading for example, difficult.

I've tried cleaning the nozzles, needles and aircaps, and the trigger/air valve don't look dirty/caked in paint.

Problem 3 also happens with a cheaper "Chinawata" Veda-180 that I've got, but it's always been that way so I've always put it down to it being a cheap "Chinawata", my H&S Ultra I don't recall exhibiting that problem until recently.

Would anyone here be able to help me diagnose and fix these problems?

    Thanks in advance.

  15. Kit Manufacturer: Italeri.

    Scale: 1/72.

Paints used: Tamiya XF81/XF24/XF69/XF85, Vallejo Metal Color Jet Exhaust/Aluminium/Steel, Hataka Orange Line NATO blue.

    Clear coats: Tamiya semi gloss.

Weathering products - Flory Dark Dirt and Sand wash overall.

    Aftermarket - None.

Started this just after New Year, and I opted for the RAF 84 squadron, Cyprus, circa 1987 livery.

Italeri's instructions are a bit vague on the placement of some of the small parts and decals, and there are panel lines on their diagrams that aren't on the plastic!  Unfortunately I didn't check my references so some parts/decals may be in the wrong position (I'm fairly certain the chaff/flare dispenser on the tail is!), even though I followed the instructions.

Forgot to put the side window clear parts in, I can still remove the "canopy" but I like how it looks as is.  It was a hot day in Cyprus, the pilot had them removed, that's my excuse...

My attempt at the Nato Blue band looks OK, although in the photos you can't see it's not perpendicular, as it should be, to the panel lines over the top, and it's wider than it should be.  I used Hataka Orange Line Nato Blue for the band, but I think at 60%ish Hataka lacquer thinners I over thinned it as it seemed thinner and harder to spray nicely than MRP.

FYI Hataka-lacquer doesn't seem to react well to Tamiya semi-gloss, that I think I thinned a few weeks ago with self levelling thinners, being brush painted over the top of it...

This kit could really benefit from single piece exhausts...

  16. 'tis the season to build Star Wars, fa la la la la, la la la la

    • Kit Manufacturer: Bandai.
    • Scale: 1/144.
    • Paints used: Vallejo Model Air.
    • Clear coats: Tamiya semi gloss and Windsor & Newton Galeria Gloss/Matt varnishes mixed 50/50ish (because I ran out of Tamiya semi gloss).

Weathering products - Flory washes overall, AK Interactive Bearings and Grease enamel wash.

    • Aftermarket - Picture frame, rose gold copper wire, Tamiya Diorama Texture Paint (snow).  Krystal Klear for sticking down a couple of the stickers on the Snowspeeder.

I assembled these models in 2017, with a grand idea of sticking an arduino inside the body of the AT-AT, to control a couple of fibre optic strands in the chin guns, for a guns firing effect, and an LED in the "head" for the red "windscreen".  Decided to abandon that idea as it was never going to be visible, just too small an effect on the guns at this scale and you don't see a red "windscreen" lit up in Empire anyway...

...So it sat for 2 years waiting for me to paint it all and put it on a base!

Surprisingly the stickers on the Snowspeeder were as thin as decals, and didn't pose any problems, apart from a couple peeling on me...

The purists will say "that's Luke's Snowspeeder", "your AT-AT is grey".  It's not, I didn't put the specific markings on besides the grey stripes. I also really didn't fancy masking off the grey stripes on the Snowspeeder and painting them orange instead.  And, I know.  I would have preferred to have achieved that whiter grey look to the AT-AT, but I didn't, for reasons...

I was going to buy a Rebel Alliance turret from a seller on Shapeways, I'm glad I didn't as there wouldn't be room on the base and due to limited display space I couldn't go bigger/longer on the base...

  17. So, I started this model back in 2017, lost interest and left it half built.  I came back to it a month or two ago, completed the building of the kit and again lost interest.  However I managed to finish it a couple of weeks ago now.

Had some problems with fit, notably the canopy, the rear side joins near the burner cans and the sparrow missiles.  Decals were another problem here and there, particularly on the Phoenix Missiles, for some reason after I had them on the missiles almost all the stencil data decals came off and rolled up on me as I was trying to handle the missiles to apply microset (or is it sol?  The red one)!  Lost the 2nd vane on the dorsal area also, I was so close to not losing any small parts!

I also managed to scratch/damage some of the MRP insignia white paint I put down, during handling, whilst painting (and possibly decalling), I'm calling it weathering/bird strike!

There is some oil weathering on it, but you can't really see it in these photos, and it didn't turn out quite as good as on my Airfix 1/72 A-4 Skyhawk (although I fogged the canopy on that one so hey ho).

If I were to build this kit again, I'd buy a Master brass pitot for the nose (I had a terrible time with the kit supplied part, it still isn't attached properly or straight!) and try to get the canopy to fit nicely, or fill the gap, before painting commenced...

Due to limited space, and my camera not being very good I found it quite awkward to get the photos I wanted and I'm not really sure why, so these are the best I could do at the time...

  18. Hey all

Would anyone here be able to give me some help on some colours for a MiG-29UB?

The subject in question is a Peruvian MiG-29UB, like this one -

    https://www.airliners.net/photo/Peru-Air-Force/Mikoyan-Gurevich-MiG-29UB-9-51/1521871

    https://www.airliners.net/photo/Peru-Air-Force/Mikoyan-Gurevich-MiG-29UB-9-51/2436856

Need to know what the green and greys on the top side and under side, assuming they're different (and also that darker grey if it has a specific name/number) are called, and or FS or equivalent numbers, so that I can look for either MRP or Hataka equivalents.

I'm guessing it's in Light Grey and Grey Green, and I'm also guessing that in MRP-land that's MRP 284 and MRP 287, although MRP-287, the Grey Green doesn't look as bright/contrasting as in those photos?

    Thanks in advance.

  19. I don't post all that frequently here, but I've had a pretty good year and a bit as far as modelling goes, so I thought I'd post up some photos of my recent builds...

In chronological order, starting from last September -

Hasegawa 1/48 Hurricane Mk IID (I'm aware the tail wheel is the wrong way round, it won't actually fit the correct way round, Hasegawa's error in making that part, although I suppose I could have cut it and sanded it and forced it to fit correctly).

    spacer.pngspacer.png

    Xtrakit 1/72 DH Vampire

    spacer.pngspacer.png

Italeri 1/72 F-117 Nighthawk (unfortunately the kit decals for the underside cracked on me during the build)

    spacer.pngspacer.pngspacer.png

Revell 1/72 Tornado GR1 (I had a problem with the decals, they're by Printscale, and were very thin, the "Mig Eater" decal rolled up irreparably, hence why it's missing)

    spacer.pngspacer.pngspacer.pngspacer.pngspacer.png

    Revell 1/72 Mig-21

    spacer.pngspacer.png

    Airfix 1/72 C-47 (my D-Day commemoration build)

    spacer.pngspacer.pngspacer.pngspacer.pngspacer.pngspacer.png

Airfix 1/72 A-4 Skyhawk (unfortunately the canopy fogged on me, Mk.82 Snakeyes are from Hasegawa)
