  1. Hey all

Not too long ago I bought a roll of green paper from Hobbycraft, to use as a backdrop when taking photos, so that I can edit them in photoshop and replace the background with a different one.  I've only used it once however as I found that the green reflected on the model that I was photographing, leaving a green hue on the model in the photos.  The paper roll isn't even particularly glossy.

Anyone here an experienced photographer that uses green (or similarly coloured) backgrounds and able to offer some advice on how to avoid the green of the background showing on the model itself?

    Thanks in advance.

  2. Not much that I can add other than I always have builds that I think are going to be my "crowning achievement" and garner more attention from fellow modellers on the internet than usual, and they don't turn out as planned.  Had to abandon a 1/72 FW-190 that I was adding all the Eduard bells and whistles to, because it was just ever so slightly beyond my skill level.

I've felt like giving up on modelling also, quite often because I cannot achieve what I want and plan to.

I know it's a cliche, but try to "Keep calm and carry on".  Take a break from modelling, I do regularly, quite often during a build, for weeks, but don't go selling off your stuff, you'll only regret it later.

  3. Check out Printscale's Sikorsky S-65 Sea Stallion Part 1 and Part 2 decal sets.  There's two on there that are British, one that was based at Woodbridge and one from Finningley, obviously not a Pave Low though, just a HH-53.  I have a set for an Airfix H-53 that I'll eventually get around to doing as Knife 21...

Links to decals, you can also get them at Hannants I believe -

  4. Could be what Steve said.  Sounds though, from what you've said, that the full screen window is stealing focus and causing other apps/windows to remain behind the full screen window or minimise themselves.  Some results on this google search may help -

Totally agreed with you. The post offices/my Hermes drop off points are prepped for social distancing.

unfortunately we are only just at the beginning of this crisis. The real impact on people will be the damaged economy. Most people will be far worse affected by that than by CV. The numbers are the worst since the Depression. We still have a collective memory of that for a reason.

We need to get on with our lives as best we can and return to normal as quickly as possible for our sake and that of our children.

There is no vaccine. There may never be one. We are just going to have to deal with this.

Please open the forums. Every reasonable step we can take to get back to normal will help the economy and every one of us. While it is uncomfortable to say it that really has to be the priority now.

I fully agree that we need to get on with our lives.

Just think people's priorities are a bit selfish at this time and "re-opening" is being skewed towards those more fortunate, rather than those at the bottom who truly need it.

Golf clubs opening for a round or two?  Yeah big on people's need to get back to work and earn a crust.  Not...

Given the general demographic of modellers I highly doubt anyone on here is in the position of having to sell model kits to survive...

Any ideas on when the sales forum will be open again?

I really do think it is in poor taste asking this.  Especially when there are people in increasingly difficult situations, whose least biggest issue is if they can use a forum to buy kits from.

Bit like golfists though, couldn't wait to get down the private members clubs once the govt. stated people can go play golf.  It's been so hard for them, the poor dears...

  7. Used a shapeways seller once, a few years ago, for a 1/43 R2-D2.

I've looked at stuff on there many times, mostly I'm in the market for 3d printed stuff for tabletop gaming, scenery mostly, and to be honest I've always found the whole of 3d printed items market too expensive.  Sellers price themselves out of a lot of sales just as much as Shapeways is now doing across it's entire business.

  8. Work In Progress threads suffer similarly.  I used to post WIP threads on various forums, but gave up as no-one paid any attention to mine - no point in going to the extra effort of interrupting a build every 5 minutes to take photos if no-one is even going to give you the time of day.

Those that do get the attention, in RFI or WIP, on any forum or other form of social media, are those by modellers who spend big on big kits, on as much aftermarket items as possible, and/or scratchbuild everything that isn't already in a kit and available as aftermarket items.

Even happens in a Group Build, when you'd think people would be looking to see what's going on...

Thread's being overlooked is an age old problem, not really one related to an increase in people's activity.

  9. If anyone is still wondering if Sea King interiors go into a Revell 1/72 Jolly Green Giant, I can confirm that they do.  I built (not very well, 5 years ago) a Revell 1/72 Jolly Green Giant, and used internals and some external parts (rotors) from a Fujimi SH-3D Sea King.  Fitted perfectly.  I also have a Revell MK 41 Sea King, and the parts are the same in size.

Several people have done the same over the years, couple of guys over on the Finescale Modeller forums have WIP threads (although nothing recent so they may have been decimated by Photobucket).

  10. I'm sure I've heard that some musicians get away with playing other people's songs, without incurring royalty payments, by changing a few notes or lyrics.  And I'm sure I heard that someone used a cars shape (believe it was for a video game), but intentionally made a few inaccuracies, to avoid legal issues - wouldn't be surprised if that's why some kits are found by rivet counters to be inaccurate despite looking fairly much like what they are supposed to be...

Games Workshop took a model figure making company to court, destructively removed the entirety of one of their tabletop war games from sale (which meant for some players, resigning hundreds, in some cases, thousands, of £/$ worth of miniatures to the shelf), released a "new" one to replace it that is nothing like the old game, and have been slowly re-writing/re-organising the other major tabletop war game they produce, simply because they didn't like 3rd party makers filling gaps in the model range that Games Workshop weren't interested in filling themselves!?!

AM General tried to sue Activision, the publishers of the Call of Duty video games (and presumably the companies who actually make the games, Infinity Ward and Treyarch), for using the likeness of a HMMWV in some Call of Duty games.  They lost as I understand it with judges determining that video games are art (obviously citing something along the lines that you can't sue someone for painting a picture of your product)...

Then you have people like Apple and Samsung fighting over who owns the trademark to the shape of a smartphone, the chocolate bar shape as it's called, the most basic of shapes...

Copyright/trademarks/the notion of IP has reached ridiculous and petty extents this past 20-30 years, more so this last decade...

Another thing that puzzles me. Tamiya make loads of zeros but other kit makers might only make one hurricane or one spitfire or one 109. It's odd.

That's more to do with what sells the most than anything.  The majority of people want to buy a Spitfire/Hurricane/109/Zero etc.  How many people would want a Bloch MB.162?

  12. Yep, it's one reason that kit prices have been steadily increasing.

I also believe there's some problems within the car modelling world where certain car companies are no longer allowing model kits of their cars to be made, unless a company stumps up an exorbitant amount.  Think I heard Tamiya is ceasing making certain kits for that reason.

Had a similar issue in the racing simulation video game sector a while back with Porsche and Ferrari...

There is a point where aggressively protecting trademarks becomes counter productive and anti-consumer, many big companies have already gone beyond that...

  13. Hey all

Not sure if this is the right sub-forum, so apologies in advance.

With the warmer weather coming I'm getting a little worried about my airbrush compressor.  It's one of those KMS AS-186 airbrush compressors with a tank.  I've had it since about 2015/16.

It has had for a while now (read at least a year) a habit of running every few minutes.  It also gradually heats up on the main body, and can during longer periods of airbrushing (lets say over an hour or two) get very hot to the touch, sometimes as hot as a freshly boiled cup of coffee.  If I leave it a while the air pressure goes down to 0.

I've noticed newer variations of the AS-186 compressor have a fan on one end, or at least a piece of plastic with open slots in it.  Mine doesn't.  It just has 2 metal plates either end with what seems to be a card layer between them and the main body.

I've tried the washing up liquid trick to see if I can spot any leaks.  And I cannot see any leak.  Although there must be one somewhere.

I also empty the tank frequently.

To mitigate the heat at least would I be doing anything wrong (i.e. making the compressor unsuable) by taking one of the end plates off (and the cardboard piece) and putting a PC fan in it's place?  Is there anything else I could do (besides buying a new compressor)?

    Thanks in advance.

  14. Lots of Airfix in here.  Usually I don't pay much attention to the box art, I tend to be more interested in what's inside, but there are a few that I like from kits that I've bought/built in the past 5 years -

  15. Ah thanks.   That'd be Light Ghost Grey then.  The precise grey I don't have...

I'll probably have to go with Vallejo Model Air 050 as that's the closest I probably have.  Don't really want to order, at this time, another bottle of paint just for the sake of a couple of sidewinders.

I usually paint them white with a black nose, looks OK in 1/72 scale...

  16. Hey all

Currently building a SHAR FRS1, to be painted in a paint scheme pertinent to that little argument in the south Atlantic during the '80s...

As I know little about RAF/RN ordnance I'm wondering what colour the "sidewinders" (if they are even actually sidewinders) were actually painted vs what the kit instructions state?

    Thanks in advacnce
