  1. Have heard AK Gauzy is good over metallics, don't know about over Alclad specifically though.  Wrt Klear/Future, from experience I wouldn't brush it on, I did that on my Mig-21 and I'm sure it filled panel lines in.

  2. Your right it is a friendly forum, and I've kept it friendly.  If you find offence or sarcasm in my comments it's not because of any intent on my part.  Other than trying to add a little levity using the term "brass blowers".

This thread was about you mourning your social/leisure event not taking place this year, wasn't it?

Like I said, the point is either understood or not at all.

Look after yourself and stay safe, yourself.

  3. Apologies, it's not that I don't understand Steve's (BIG X) point, I do.  It's strange, maybe even dis-concerting, not having a town full of brass blowers, when it's happened for decades.  I get that.  It is a shame that such traditional events are falling by the wayside, for the moment.

I've "lost" traditional events also, we all have, I watch a lot of motorsports, haven't been able to so far, some very big events may not even happen this year and it's an anniversary year.  Might even go so far as to say it was [insert adjective here] not having the annual carnival where I live.

But such things will come back.

You say "we can't all experience other people's dramas" - however is that not what we're all being expected to do when people tell of "dark days" and/or their "struggle to survive this lockdown".

I meant no malice, or anything personal, by my previous comments, however the point I was making still stands.  I guess it's one of those points that is either understood, or isn't and never will be.

Around the size of a 1/72 Concorde & how many of those do you see built?

Dunno, can't say I've taken a count.  I would imagine it does appeal to more than just your usual aircraft enthusiasts, and by that I mean it was a hugely well known civil aircraft.  You go to someone who isn't an aircraft nerd, or a modeller, and ask them what a Phantom is, then ask them what Concorde was.   Assuming they're "of a certain age" of course.

I agree with your summation of likely candidates though, I would imagine we all would.

  5. Airfix's Hellcat is a fairly isolated example though, in terms of new kits, and is their big new "hurrah" kit to grab people's attention seeing as Airfix are back under previous management and trying to do better than they had been. Plus it's only just under 17 inches long.  You're talking nearly 3ft long with a Phantom...

Looking at Model Hobbies, a fairly well stocked retailer here in the UK, there's only about a dozen or two 1/24 kits or bigger on sale, and some of those are just variants of other aircraft (like multiple Trumpeter Stuka's).  There's only two 1/24 or greater jets, and they're the Trumpeter and Merit USMC Harriers.

Looking on scalemates, there are 8 examples of 1/24 jets, most were tooled in the 80s or before, and the most prevalent being Airfix's Harrier

If companies were going to make 1/24 jets in great numbers I think they'd be doing so already.  The market for new 1/24 aircraft kits appears to be in the WW2 prop examples, with one or two examples popping up every couple of years (Trumpeter Stuka in 2017, Airfix's Mossie and Tiffy 2010 and 2014 and their Hellcat last year).

Bit like French WW2 bombers though, I know of a person who's always wishing for them (not me), they never get them... 😁

BTW I'm not saying it can't, shouldn't or won't happen, or that anyone is wrong. 🙂

  6. The problem with 1/24 aircraft kits is - how many mortgages are you prepared to take out and where do you put the models.

It's a bit like the 1/32 big bombers phase that has cropped up in recent years, and has fizzled out, with manufacturers seemingly deciding not to pursue it that much - people just won't buy them.  It's a very niche market, in a hobby that is already a niche market.

For me, living in a shoe box in the UK, a 1/72 F-14 Tomcat is probably about as big as I'd like to go with jets, maybe a 1/48 F-14 at a push.  Mostly really couldn't do anything much bigger than a 1/48 Mosquito or 1/72 C-47 Skytrain, unless I get rid of it upon completion, or build a new wing on the mansion...

With technology advances made by various companies in the past few years I can see a rise in 1/72 kits with details you'd see on larger scale kits (bit like Airfix's recent Phantom and Buccaneer kits), before you see a rush to pop out 1/24 jets.

  7. Sorry if you feel lost there.

    It's about having perspective.

You can't enjoy your tradition this year.  Fair enough if that's your biggest issue this year.  There will be other years.  Brass band events as you say are older than both of us.

Don't wish to offend but I find it highly selfish that people keep on "mourning" loss of events they might attend or take part in (besides those relying on them for a living), such as those complaining about festivals not going ahead, and other quite middle class past times.  That selfishness also extends to celebrities plugging their own plights when they're doing nothing to help society.

At the risk of sounding self righteous, things are going to get cancelled.  People finding themselves without a particular event to attend perhaps might do well to seek opportunities to help society, rather than worry about the loss of a tradition for a year or so...

People like Anthony Ogogo and Tom Moore put people complaining about "loss" of events to shame.

    Again, no offence meant.

Well Rob - I didn't want to trivialise the current situation - I was merely commenting on a generations old tradition in my local village - it was not my intention to offend anyone - just grieve for another aspect of this terrible set of circumstances that is impacting us all - in many different ways.

Stay safe & I hope you sort your situation - Steve

No offence taken.  My personal situation is better currently than it was at the start of this lockdown.

I'm just kind of fed up with seeing people complaining or "mourning" for the loss of something that in the grand scheme of things is trivial, when there's people, still, in far worse situations, with even more problems around the corner due to the impact this has all had on the economy.

Had George Russell, Williams F1 racing driver on local news tonight telling us all how "difficult" it has been to keep himself entertained.  Meanwhile many weeks ago Anthony Ogogo, 2012 Olympic boxer, turned pro boxer, turned (bizarrely) pro wrestler, announced he'd be helping to deliver food parcels in his area.

Then of course there's Tom Moore.

Guess who I've got more respect for...

    No offence meant.

  9. Have you thought about contacting them instead of complaining on here?  No offence meant btw.

When check out as a guest and put in an Aberdeen address (I got the county wrong) I still get the same delivery costs...

Seems that the year 2020 will be remembered for everything that we’ve had to miss out on very sad times 😕

    Stay Safe

For me 2020 will be remembered as the year I went back to having to worry about when I'd get food.  Been there twice in my life, was hoping I'd never go there again.

Doubt I'm the only person who'll remember it as that either.

Still, brass bands being cancelled.  😪

  11. Don't know what you're looking at?

Jadlam's website currently states "free delivery on all orders".  Most of their kits on their ebay shop also appear to have free postage.

I've just gone to checkout (obviously not my actual details, but still in the UK) on that Tamiya bike pre-order -

  12. That was pretty much my point.

What he does show you though can be translated into something possible with more average levels of equipment though.  That box he made for example wouldn't be too difficult to make with basic tools.  Just won't be as easy as it was for him.

Sometimes he even does a bit of model making, which definitely can be done by average people.

  13. No, hairystick, unfortunately not.

Anyhow thanks guys, I'll pick one of those Helix one's up on eBay in due course.  Has to be better than the one I bought, it came in a set of 2, 12" and 6", and I'm sure they were made for measuring the outside of large pipes because they're as bendy as a bendy doll.   Chinese "steel"...

  14. Hey all

Probably a bit of a long shot, but does anyone know where I can get a good solid steel rule from online for not too much (about a fiver?)?  I bought one on eBay a couple of years ago but it turned out to be quite flexible, which is not good imo for cutting straight on soft surfaces....

Brand/make to look out for would be good to know.

    Thanks in advance.

Aware of the differences was using it as an analogy to illustrate the point that pure electronic devices have a useful life.

100 years for RAM has not yet been proven!

I get that.  But one components useful life is not the same as another.  And others may not have been aware  As for 100 years being proven, doubt it ever will be.  Who needs to prove it anyhow?!  RAM lasts so long in terms of a "lifetime" that no-one cares. 😄

The lifetime is not the issue when mixing RAM boards.

  16. Personally if you want a simple wooden box I'd make it myself (although I personally don't have a decent way of cutting sheets of wood, i.e. table saw).

Going to be far less expensive in the long run and you can make it exactly how you want/need it to be.

And it's so easy, as Adam Savage here shows us.  An acrylic box is just as easy, possibly even easier, to make (although more expensive, obviously), just get some acrylic sheet, cut to size (or have it cut to size), get some Tensol, and glue your corners.  Just need to make sure you get everything straight... -

Recently defraged a couple of hard drives, came to the SSD (Solid State Device) and was warned that to continue could cause the drive to fail  so maybe electronic memory does have a life span.

An SSD is different to RAM.  RAM is volatile memory, and an SSD is flash memory.  A lot of people make the mistake of confusing RAM with storage.

The more write operations you do on an SSD the shorter it's lifespan (in general, to a point).  More explanation of that here - https://www.cnet.com/how-to/how-ssds-solid-state-drives-work-increase-lifespan/

More about defragging SSDs if you wish to read it here - https://lifehacker.com/windows-does-defragment-ssds-but-its-okay-1666753409

Not the same case with RAM.  Nothing is stored permanently within it and it operates in a different way to a storage drive (although you can use RAM as a RAMDrive).  You can't defrag RAM to my knowledge.  From what I've read RAM apparently has a life span (depending on level of usage) of around 100 years.  So nothing to worry about as far as lifespan goes...

  18. Not sure precisely where imports come in (bar knowing the usual ports), but I ordered something, that I could take or leave, from a co. called Miracle Mart about 2 weeks ago, I believe they are in HK, and it arrived the other day, was surprised as I thought I'd be waiting months given the current circumstances, don't know if it was surface mail though.

6 weeks is possible though given where your goods are coming from even in "normal" times.  Get in touch with the person you've purchased from, see if they have any way of tracking your item.

  19. I'd go with the 2 new boards of RAM.

The one installed is likely to be not as good as the new ones given (from what you've stated) that it's 10 years old.  Wear and tear and general technology improvements and all that.  Plus mixing the two sets may not be ideal, and could cause issues.

  20. I'm a buyer on eBay, strangely it seems to be my main shopping outlet for non-food items, I've also sold the odd model kit or two on eBay.

My thoughts on this are -

Look at a seller's feedback before you buy.

I've often been about to buy something, that I'm perhaps a little wary of buying (because the seller seems iffy (and I'm very wary of sellers outside of the UK as well as those overseas sellers with a UK warehouse) or the item is too cheap) only to check a seller's feedback and see that people aren't happy with them or what they're receiving from the seller.

Test the water, don't place large value orders for stuff from sellers you haven't used before - buy small value amounts first, like a couple of quid's worth, and I mean literally a couple of quid or so, don't go throwing £20 at a seller you're unsure of.  Applies to any online marketplace really, not just eBay.

  21. This model was released by Games Workshop in 1998. I bought mine circa 2007. I started it, but I never finished it off so I went back to it 2 weeks ago, stripped it completely, started again and completed it today.

Had to use "some" green stuff on the wing "roots", and one of them broke off today, so there's a gap or two...

Still have to put a clear coat over this, wanted to take photos before the clear coat dulls down the metals...

Overall though I'm happy with this, one of my better paint jobs recently, especially consider the current situation...
