Thanks Rob,

Nice model Jeff, and impressive memory to recall the changes you made after 5 odd years.
I've always thought Iron Duke and her sisters were great looking ships sadly overlooked in bigger scales.

She's a beauty. Sinister looking but still lovely lines. Good result. Now, get back to the carriers!
Thanks, I will, I will, I want to get them done for the end of the year, the plan to put them in the comp at Telfird has long since slid but by Christmas will do instead,

I know what you mean, sometimes the fiddling seems to go on for ever, and no progress seems to be happening.
Those two do look good though.

Thanks Jon, I think your spot on the aswell - I've been dreading the masking and its also now at the stage where its lots of smaller bits that aren't going to notice until they're all together,

Well with a bit of mojo coming back I'm getting little bits done on these two quicker again, as much as I was working on them everything was taking longer as my enthusiasm was waning. However bit more camouflage done on Zeppelin;
Ive been working on Taiho but that's not noticeable as of yet so photo's later,
thanks

Here is my latest completed project, I say project but in truth these subs are so small they could be knocked out pretty quickly. This is the Revell version, overall pretty easy to build and quite detailed really, even if the edges are a bit soft. I've taken an age with it as its essentially a keep your sanity project whilst working on my two carriers which have been slowly stalling. So finishing this off has also been a mojo restarter thankfully. I added eduard etch set for it which is basically railing and a couple of small details and a little bit of rigging aside that its out the box. She's pained by brush with humbrol and colour coats, then tried a pin wash on top of windsor and newton galleria gloss coat - didn't go well so it because a general all over wash, maybe it needed more gloss to work better. I matt coated it using W+N galleria again, I find it doesn't brush on well so I'll airbrush it next time. Overall its come out okay I guess, might do another one at some point,
Thanks for looking

Well the good news is that I managed to recover the lost work...but only after I'd spent about 3 hours yesterday trying to recreate it. So this is what she now looks like:
The plan is to build in 1/350 and I've got a couple of options. I can either print the whole hull in 5 main sections - my printer can't cope with any more than that - or just print the fore and aft ends which are for me at least the hardest parts to build from styrene sheet but scratch build the centre section.
I have got copies of Profile 23 and 24 which @S-boat 55 kindly sent me last year.
I'm acutely aware that this is taking over the ARK ROYAL thread so perhaps I should start a separate 3D-build WIP thread? I was loathe to do so just yet because this is a long term project and the frequency of updates will be sparse!
Personally I'd say a WIP would seem appropriate, even with updates only being from time to time,

Fascinating thread this. Thanks to all contributors.
Just a thought. Notwithstanding the fact that the Admiralty may have mandated something on 30 May, 701 Sqn were IIRC ashore in Norway and from what I have read about the Norwegian campaign stores support ashore was sparse so I would put money on a bet that paint supplies were not amongst their spares and I would suspect there is every possibility that they may have been unable to comply with the directive by the time they embarked. I'm sure that ARK would have had the paint on board but would the tempo of operations have permitted the repainting? I don't know.
I'd be interested in any information that you did have pertaining to FURIOUS in 1939/1940. In the assumption that there were no suitable kits that could be converted, I have started drawing her in CAD and plan at some point in the future to 3D print her but owing to paucity of information it is proceeding somewhat slowly. This is a render of progress to date although somewhat annoyingly we had a power cut about a week or so ago and my PC crashed. Even though I know I had saved it, Fusion 360 seems to have gone back to a much earlier version of this. I had also drawn all of the supports for the 8 barrelled pom-poms, opened up the covered fo'c'sle, added the hawse pipes and whole raft more. No idea what's happened to them. I will be starting a WIP thread at some point to chart progress on this but it is a long term project.
Thats a real kick in the **** to loose hard work like that. At present I'm still gathering info on her, I think I started a thread about her a whole back, a member on here very kindly sent me the profile warship editions that covered her, I'll try and find the thread as a point/place to share bits. I'd cheekily add that when at some point your cad work is done I'd be very interested to see sections if possible, 3d printing is beyond me at the moment so scratch build is the only route and I no longer have access to cad which means doing it by hand - just a bit time consuming. I have a small amount of hope that veryfire aren't actually going under as their website is now showing as under maintenance rather than for sale, they announced intentions for a furious model which would be a lot easier.
Re the hull, the repulse hull looks about right to me in terms of dimensions, at least close enough to not worry about the difference. The issues lie the bulges being wrong for Repulse and even more wrong for Furious.
One option is getting plans off of the archives at Greenwich, I've contacted them about it but they aren't cheap shall we say,
I'll see about finding that thread,

Railings on - well as much as needed, then busted out the airbrush. Do the lightest shade first is the guidance - I recalled why spraying white on top of black isn't fun, still more fun than masking,
White done;
Of course in the process of doing this ive knocked one of the rudders off again - however next up will be the lighter shade of blue then darker etc. She'll hopefully start looking like she's coming together then but that will likely be next weekend.
While i have your attention what are peoples thoughts re wooden decks. I'm using them on Zeppelin as I have little option with the flight deck not having any plank markings even though it was planked. Veryfire excelled in doing Taiho's' to such an extent that i don't have a brush thin enough to work through stages of highlighting individual planks etc. So I have a quandary;
Above is Zeppelins deck laid in place, Taiho's with its initial coat of paint and laid on that is a future builds flight deck blue wooden deck. I'm trying to work out if A) when displayed together it'll make Taiho stand out if i don't get a 'stick on' deck and B is this a carrier thing - as there is so much deck that its almost a given that a wood deck is just a sensible thing to use and could i paint it to such a point where by it will measure up.
Taiho's deck was darkened just before her loss and so i want to mirror that and think I've found the product to do it - its just deciding what goes under it, paint or wood!?!
Should have more actual progress to show soon. I was hoping to get more done today but turns out masking takes quite a while. This build has just goone over the year mark so i need to get on with it. I console myself though that my build is likely more complete than Graf Zeppelin ever actually reached in reality. I wondered the other day what those who launched these ships or built them thought when they never actually saw service. Graf Zeppelin was launched by the granddaughter of the ships namesake, wonder if she ever thought 'when are they going to actually finish it'?
Thanks for stopping by,

Hi Sam,
I find Inscape to be very good for the design and preparations for scratchbuilding; however, you don't mention how you are going to produce the parts afterwards. A good complementary tool for cutting plastic sheet is a cutting machine, or are you going to 3D print the parts?
Here is my work, using Inkscape and a cutting machine, on how I produced the cross-section frames and it I would use the same method for cutting the hull plates.
cheers,
MikeHi Mike,
Thanks for the info, I remember your thread now and being a little awestruck at how much work was going into the framing. Surely the hull must weight a tonne as a result?
To be honest I had figured out would be a case of printing out the sections (at the right scale) and then very carrefour cutting out and filing to shape as needed.
Is also thought about utilising the plans for each of the decks to infill between the frames. This was largely because the plans I have are only at key stations so require a little infilling so the hull form comes out right, does that make sense?
The idea is that this will be a slow burn project along side what ever kit I am on by the time I actually make a start. I like to try and work out a link between the ships I build and I stumbled on one that fits well with my wider plans. If all goes well a later scratch build will be HMS Furious but I think I need to give something a little smaller a go first. Knowing my luck by the time I get to it an injection moulded kit will be announced though!

Such a majestic looking ship, your def right about the warm light being the way to go. I know your looking to avoid porthole by hand but I use a pin vice with proxxon drill bits and find three turns and I'm through as opposed generic drill bits off ebay etc where it was more like 20, just a thought,
