So the site kicked me off - update cont.
Wind baffle for the bridge - one vein is crooked which is frustrating but nowt i cna do about it now,
Here's how its starting to form up, the pipes adjacent to the funnel are a nice feature I think,
Also a very nice man from China sent me a present, well less a present as i paid for it but still it looks great,
I certainly didn't pay the £100 that was being asked for it though, spent many long hours trawling the internet and checking and rechecking sites and it popped up at a much more reasonable price on aliexpress, delivered in 10 days as well which was very quick. It looks fantastic in person imho so rather than try and stain it to show how the deck was blackened I'm going to go with it as is. Getting it has certainly spurred me on I'm chomping at the bit to finish Taiho now sp trying to get to the bench as much as possible. Did give in and go see Don't worry darling and The Woman King last night though - both enjoyable - the Woman King was fantastic actually,
Still so much to do but also feels like I'm really getting there now.
I've decided to try and go with this picture of her as the guide when i paint her uppers. There are only a few photos of The Great Phoenix (Taiho), and this is the clearest of her whilst she was anchored off Tawitawi, Borneo in May 1944 with a Shokaku class carrier and I think Nagato sitting in the background. Masking off the light band (which I'll do very pale grey) on the funnel is going to be tricky but I'll try. She was an impressive looking ship and fast to at 33.5 knots, but had deep flaws in her design partially created in numerous compromised made throughout her conception and delivery. The Japanese understood that in part and ironed some of them out with the next class of carriers but it led to them never really knowing how to use her, was she a class A carrier destined for the front line or a B type that would sit in fleet support.
She spent most of her time sitting at anchor and was lost after only a few months in service. Commissioned on the 7th of March 44, she then sank on 19th June the victim to a single torpedo from the USS Albercore a Gato class sub. Due to the amount of armour she carried Taiho was unusual for a carrier in that her lower hangar was below the water line, the torpedo strike caused flooding that filled the bottom of her forward hangar well as well as rupturing fuel lines. The mixing sea water and aviation fuel caused dangerously volatile fumes to start to build up internally and unlike American carriers her hangars were sealed with only mechanically operated ventilation. This wasn't helped by her crew being order to plank up the opening for the forward well as the lift had distorted and was jammed in a lowered position. This allowed flight operations to carry one for several hours but exacerbated the lack of ventilation. After hours of trying to resolve the situation her chief of damage control ordered her ventilation systems to be turned on to full in an effort to get rid of aviation and oil fuel vapours that were now building up in both her upper and lower her hangar. This had the opposite affect, saturating the rest of the ship with a mixture of oil and aviation vapours mixing with air and turning the ship into a powder keg. Six and a half hours after the torpedo hit she was racked by a massive explosion from stem to stern that witnesses reported caused the flight deck to heave up and blow the sides of the ship out. At 16:28 she sank by the stern taking 1650 of her crew down with her.

Hi All,
Bit of an update, more etch going on,
Funnel grill finished and painted;
Radar parts forming up
This is the underside on the platform at eh base of the mast - didn't stop to think that when fitted you cant see the bottom so why do the etch - the kit has a few bits like this - there's extensive etch to go under the two aircraft lifts which again you would never be able to see, the upper platform for the mast has more complicated etch under it but i forgot to photo before i put it in place and now you can barely see it..........

Yes, it is. I will definitely be swapping out the Trumpeter screws for the Pontos ones, although I might need to think about how to tone down the glossy look. Surely brass propellers would not have looked that shiny, even when new?
I shouldn't imagine so, in photos the always look smooth but not glossy,

That pontos prop is beautiful

Nice one Jon, she's come out lovely
Dunkerque moving up the build queue?

It is, I do regret painting the beam detail in the bow section, itd hardly be seen but if looked for would have shown off the etch without looking out of place

Very Fire released "American Dido" - Atlanta class 1/350. So beautifull ships and model too, I hope!
This is great news, rumour was they'd gone under but clearly there's hope yet,

Afternoon, small update
Hope youa re all well,
Been working on the ships boats for Taiho, there are a lot spare with how veryfire have done the sprues but they're nicely detailed even without the etch so thats not a bad thing.
I've been stuck in a cycle of I cant do X until I do Y , and I cant do Y until I do Z, and I cant do Z until I do X - so took the plunge and fixed the etch under the flight deck overhang and fixed the 'treehouse' superstructure to the underside of the FD as well. Ive not fixed it to the main deck yet, that'll wait until after I've painted it and got the ship boats stuck down as well. I might fit some angles gussets under the deck edge, the gap seems a little large between the brass and deck edge right now, I'll have to see what I have spare.
She's coming on though, railings now going on, a little fiddly so that and further work on the Island will likely be the focus this week. Definitely not going to be done for Telford, nor Zeppy, not to worry. There's always next year,
Think I'll go back to something with big guns after these ones are done.
Question - and I think I may have asked this before so apologies if I have - Anyone know what this rectangle stuck on her stern is?
TTFN,
Sam

@steve5 I shall follow along, I built this as my first kit back, really enjoyed it, your already doing a better job than me! Look forward to seeing it take shape,
14 minutes ago, johndon said:Looking good so far, I wish someone would do her in 1/200...
I think she'd be very doable as a scratch project, even the turrets and it has the advantage that the hull sections in the anatomy book are already in 1:200,

Not sure how well my bank balance could cope with to many more purchases but its always hard to say no when there's a good deal,
I'd hoped to have a couple of ships to enter in the competition but a)they're not finished and b) I've not joined the ipms which would make it tricky
However I'll be there rhe Saturday, I'll drop you a mesage closer to the time,

Very nice result, you've pulled out all the detail really well which really makes it standout
I've often wondered about afv kits and by the looks of yours they're very good, especially when carefully built and weathered,

Can't help re SMW - I've not been before but planning to go this year, do you normally get good deals there from suppliers?
Re following people, on a phone if you touch/press on the name it'll take you to their user page and there's a button with like a person and + sign on it you touch/press to follow,

theres a build thread on another site where some one has used the KGV as a base for Duke of York using the Pontos set, its doable but requires a little more jiggery pokery, can dm the link if you like? if feels wrong to post a link in the thread as its for another site somehow,

Stunning, a company out there should pay you heavily when you're finished to use your model to release a kit!

They're Etch ones, 16 parts each for 17 guns making 272 parts total - might take me a min or two
Some of the 3d printed stuff looks great, it is tempting but this kit has eaten a lot money wise and i still need to sort what im doing deck wise for her, painting is cheapest as i have mainly what i need but i might try getting some generic artwox sheet and cutting it to shape, its the masking off the flight deck markings thats going to be a real pain, i just cannot justify £100 for a deck and mask from veryfire though,

Gidday Sam, I gotta agree with the others, that PE is extremely well done. It's a pity it won't be easily seen. Regards, Jeff.
Thanks Jeff, it is, I'm going to get some mirrored acrylic to sit under her when displayed so it's easier to see, that said it'll only really be me that sees her anyway, I've looked at doing kaga but the pe with her is extortionate and as with other Japanese carriers and Taiho it can't really be seen in the large part,

Cheers Mike,

Jeff, just caught up with this, that's some great scratch building you've done, I always admire how you don't seem daunted by making significant adjustments to a kit and just get stuck in, keep it up,

That is an impressive bit of PE work.
Don’t you just love it when your tools are bigger than the parts.

Thabks Jon, It is always a little daunting but less so when you know it won't be easily seen if it goes wrong, I've been putting off the remaining AA guns as I'm chickening out as they'll really notice

Started working from the stern forward now on Taiho, these hooks form part of the overhead gantry crane for the ships boats, tiny wheels on the pulley cart but only lost one - lucking they give you 1 spare
, 1p coin for scale
then this is the last of the large area etch/beams, this was tricking as it has a curve in it so holding it right whilst gluing it isn't simple, luckily its fairly flexible and so when it comes to fixing it to the underside of the flight deck there hopefully wont be an issue,
cheers

Thanks Jon,
Yeah its bonkers really, but its the process i guess, I've just added another update above as the system logged me out for some reason
