  1. Hi Robert I undestand that the 'usual' pilot of XH558 (Martin Withers, DFC, I beleive?) was in the right hand seat for Sunday's display and the left hand seat was occupied by a chap whose name I can't remember, (despite hearing the commentator say it only a few hours ago! Must be my age!) but it was his first display as pilot. It certainly looks like he wanted to make an impression Jim
  2. Hi yet again First, thank you for the nice comments about my pics - however, you DO realise that'll just encourage me to post more? Well, today's weather at RIAT was rather sh*t. I suppose that's British weather though. I heard a number of people around me saying 'Why don't they move RIAT to August?' but I wonder if we could be any more sure of good weather then. Anyhow, just 4 pics (at the moment! Lol) A Hungarian Rafale with pretentions of being an Aussie F-111! Afraid I missed the major parts of the flame, despite seeing him do the same on the Saturday! While the Vulcan awaits take off clearance, a contemporary overflies. If only the Vulcan were still in service too. Vulcan takes to the air! This one IS orientated correctly Pulled this straight after take off. Even having seen them do this before it still made me think (or did I actually say it?) ****ing hell! I'm sure I wasn't the only one watching who thought 'he's not going to roll it is he?!' Cold War warriors After the Vulcan landed it held at the end of the runway to allow the B-52 to land, then they came up the runway together. If only the rain had held off - apologies for the misty appearance (I thought it was tears in my eyes at first!) Actually, that's 5 pics Hope you like these. Just departures day tomorrow. Hope I've dried out by then! Jim
  3. Hi again! Just one more from today - a close up of that amazing tail on the C-130. It does seem to be a photo - zooming in I can see the seperate parts! Imagine taking that into Boots and asking for two copies, each Hercules fin size! Off for a lay down now - another early start tomorrow Jim
  4. Thank you Keef These were taken on my Canon EOS50D and 100-400 lens. Actually, I've noticed a large number were taken at around the 300mm mark - hmmm, Canon do that nice 300 2.8 . . . . Lol! It's the first airshow I've been to in something approaching 10 years. Used to be a regular - IAT (Greenham then Fairford), Mildenhall, Yeovilton etc - but I seemed to lose interest. Still loved aircraft and aviation, but couldn't get the enthusiasm to actually go and queue . . . Then after a rather sh*tty start to the year (January made redundant, February Mum passed away) I saw the RIAT advertised and I thought, 'I'm going all 6 days'. How things have changed! Where are all the F-104's! Lol! Today had quite a poignant moment for me - not only was the Vulcan there, but the commentary for it's display was done by Sean Maffett - to me, the voice of airshows, particularly ( R )IAT. It kind of brought back memories of the airshows my Dad had taken me to when I was little It was wonderful to see a Vulcan flying again. Now all I need is a major win on the lottery to make sure it continues . . . Jim
  5. You have my sympathy Jase. It's easy to get caught out isn't it? (he said glowingly I'm not angry - he just approximates to my colour ) Here's a few more pics - first 3 from yesterday, the Dutch F-16 Lion scheme from today. It arrived! Hope you like them. Jimbo the Red
  6. Hi all Thank you for the complimentary comments. I have only just got back online (1930hrs 18 July) as the router in the hotel went down! After yesterdays wetness (ooerr!) today has been rather good - cloudy, sunshine and some bits of blue sky. I'll try and post a few pics from yesterday and today after I've been for a drink Jim PS Thank you Max, my forehead isn't too bad now. I'm one of those people who burn almost as soon as the sun comes out. I felt a bit silly today putting on suncream when the sun came out for a few mins - by the time it was on the sun had gone again! Got some odd looks, lol!
  7. Hi all Sat here in my hotel room I thought I'd post a few pics from the Wednesday arrivals at Fairford. I've not done much to them - I've forgotten to bring the mouse for my laptop and the touchpad drives me mad! Weather here was rather variable, from dark clouds and rain, to bright blue skies and sun (to which my forehead and nose can testify!) Well, I'm off to bed now ready for tomorrow! Jim
  8. Hi all Well, I've very nearly almost finished a kit. All that remains to be done is some exhaust/gun staining and adding bombs and drop tank. I thought I'd post pics here now rather than wait till it is ACTUALLY finished in case I screw up the weathering! (If it's finished enough to go into Critique Corner, Mods please feel free to move it ) It's the Tamiya 1/72 P-47. Drilled the underwing ID lights and used the little lenses from Little-cars. Gun blast tubes from plastic rod, drilled slightly in the end to try and give a hollow effect. Paints: Xtracrylix, a bit of Humbrol and Revell. Decals are all kit supplied. Weathered with ProModeller wash. (Just remembered, redid the tailwheel - I hate it when the tailwheel and leg are moulded as one bit!) This was going to be a full WiP, as it's the first I used the new airbrush and compressor on. But it's taken longer than I wanted and didn't want to have a loooong drawn out WiP thread. Anyway, on with the pics (assuming I can post them! Lol) Now for the final weathering! Jim
  9. BRILLIANT! I love it! Can't wait to see more. Jim
  10. Wow, thanks for posting that link. Sends such a tingle down my spine, watching that Was also good to see the encouragement they got, even after several attempts. Off to watch it again now Jimbo
  11. That looks abosolutely stunning! Love following the build - from the initial blocks of wood through to the finished item, seeing each stage. It's amazing watching it take shape. I'd have had no idea how to go about doing something like that. Now if I could think of a setting, I could have a go . . . oh, hold on though. I'd need to actually build something wouldn't I? Brilliant dio Jimbo
  12. Well, the Portsmouth hosted 'Meet Your Navy' is over, so at least I'll be able to park again On the plus side - just across from my office window was Ark Royal, with a Merlin on deck. I missed it coming in last Thursday, so today I made sure I had the camera with me. Before it went a Lynx departed from the RFA berthed along from the Ark. Did a nice 'climbing backwards' act, then nose downwards (causing a female collegue to go 'Ooooooo!'!) and a swift departure. The Merlin sat there for ages with first just the engines running, then rotors turning. We did beging to wonder if it was actually trying to take off with the tie downs attached - but eventually it went. It departed to the north - but just after I put the camera away it hurtled past . . . missed it, grrrrr! Anyhow, a few pics . . . (if I get it to work :-) ) Hope the pics aren't too big - if they are I'll reduce them a bit. Jimbo
  13. Hi Thank you for the offer, but I seem to have a couple more A4's I can use the decals from, as well as the G1. I sometimes wonder who it is that buys all the kits I seem to have - did I really buy 3 A4's! When you do yours, keep us informed as to which (if any) problems you have - it'll be nce to know if it was just me :-)
  14. Yep, that's the swastika. I did think about touching up the ship markings by overlaying parts of decals from another sheet, but once I've finished a model (and heaven knows that's a rare enough event! ) it takes a LOT to have me go back to it. The canopy masking is thanks to Eduard, the yellow tape masks. I know some people regard them as almost 'cheating', but for something like the 88 (or the He111 which I built along with the 88) I wouldn't be without them. And if I ever do that Stuka . . . lol!
  15. Thank you First time I've posted a pic. Yes, they're one of the kit options. Since finishing it I ready somewhere (may even have been here) that the ship 'kill' markings should be over the hakenkreuz - I think I followed the instructions (I only seem to do that if they're wrong ) and put them on first.
  16. Hi Turnerdad I've built one Hasegawa Ju-88, and had a couple of 'problems' with it. One was the joining of the cockpit section to the rest of the fuselage. I joined front to rear before putting the halves together, but still had to do a bit of bending to get the contours to match, then still used filler. Another area was the canopy. I found it difficult to match the two rear parts with the one peice front. On the next one I do I'm thinking of joining all 3 bits together then adding them to the airframe. Another area were the seperate wingtips - I omitted to make sure the wing thickness was the same as the tips, and needed filing and filling. I remember being slightly disappointed at the overall fit of the parts, but I think it may have been lack of planning on my part I was pleased with the model when I'd finished it, and am quite happy that I've two more in the stash. It didn't put me off! I think I'm always prepared to admit problems with a kit may well be down to me! Hope thats of some use. have got a couple of pics somewhere. Will try to locate and post them Happy building! Jim Edit: Found pics, this one's to see if it posts OK :-) Edit again: pic was rather big - sorry! And added one more
