  1. Hallo

As having done many exhibitions, may I suggest you something:

The a/c variants used ar this particular day are often not so easy to get as kits. You may bear in mind  the Ju-88 as A-5 variant or A-1 variant! The He-111 as early H variant or earlier,  the Ju-87 as a B-1 variant,  maybe B-2. The Do-17 as Z variant? Or earlier!

The Bf-109 as E-1 or higher E-4. The early Bf-110 as C variant.

For the Ju-88 there is plenty of material. In books.

Early Heinkel, early Dornier kits! No idea!

  2. Hallo

Many drawings had no dimensions because they were variant drawings from the first generation. A table was used for this purpose. Depending on the work piece or component, this was attached separately on the drawing or, depending on the number of change indices, on a separate sheet. Later in 2D, many companies started to reduce the number of drawings of similar products. By creating the variable variant design. The measure was just a parameter. This parameter was then calculated specifically for an order in extra calculation runs.

On top of that, the rules are to be read like a drawing and are different in every country. In Europe during the war, the DIN standard ruled with many different branches. The standards system and the drawing system in the USA, GB and Russia differ in many ways. This also leads to many misinterpretations.

  3. Hallo

    To understand an example:

If we want to understand a drawing from the historical date and all transformation through time and tools. And whatever the tools are, we have a document a drawing from the year 1940.

This drawing shows us any engineering equipment of any part of an a/c. We take out such a drawing let’s say in 1980. The drawing looks poor over the years, the paper yellowed, etc. So we take the measures which are properly shown. As an engineer this was a daily business. We had at this time an archive full of tools drawings for ALL German Luftwaffe aircraft types. The company was a key company in tools production during WW2.

The transfer of the drawing was usually done by young persons, new in company and not so high educated but well skilled. The transfer was with pencil, and afterward with ink. On the drawing maschine. In some areas of the drawing we noticed missing data. For an information on a chamfer or radii. This was the easiest task. In some cases even more. We wondered, but many such blanks were simple forgotten, time pressure to the outmost. Then verbal communicated with the person at the lathe, or typed via telegraph to other factories. In some cases the entry to the drawing never happened. On the other hand drawings were sent via courier. Here another issue has to be kept in mind. Many measures were not there in the drawing. The measures were again typed via telegraph, in the event that courier mail falls into enemy hands…

Here you may see, how difficult it was in the 1980s.

The CAD time approached, and the complete archive of drawings still in use, was transferred into CAD 2 dimensional. Year 1995. Oh, what did we find? Many drawings had drawing or measure errors. How to correct it? Take a finished product and get a look! Or ask the workshop.

Again transfer from 2D to 3D CAD. Year 2020. In this case each geometrical item, line, bow, etc. must be according to a mathematical equation. Each point must be consistent. But actually many areas did not fulfill this requirement. So what happened? To make the equal or to get them in place by special rigid mathematical expressions.

To give you a glimpse: Each welding seem cannot be shown on 3D properly.

Warm-rolled profiles cannot be displayed with radii because they overwhelm the computing power.

So far, to get an idea…

  4. Best way to get a glimpse what our writers or poets in aviation literature creates are the camo pattern in all three projections. Maybe 10% is logic!

As a former mechanical engineer and geometric teacher, it just fun. Like comic what theese experts creates! Keep smiling!

Please consider: I spent many, many days there and have thousands of photos. There are so many, that I give you a glimpse! An idea.

Go and visit this historical place.

This place is almost the center of gravity in history!

Why? Because the airbase was used in WW1 by Austrian too.

In WW2 the location was also a save place for the Aviation Museum of Berlin.

So everything from WW1 and record German aviation was transfered to Krakau.

This aircraft are today a major part in exhibition.

Also all aero engines are there, from WW1 until today.

Today all sovjet aircraft are also there.

Not to forget: Auschwitz is just 20 kilometers from there.  https://www.auschwitz.org/en/

The film Schindler's List plays in Krakau. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schindler's_List

  6. Hallo

In my modelling life, I started with brush and Revell colors. Later on spraying: First H branch, and here the bitter end was: The time for getting dry! Much too long and always the danger of finger prints!

So I changed to C branch. Drying is fast, no finger print. And you can handle metallic surfaces too with the same branch!

    Makes life easier.

  7. Hallo

@Remus389, I use Mr.Color since about 30 years. First H now C branch. The metallic colors have a wider range on SM branch. Basic Alu I use C8 only. This is the best option. The other one of shiny silver I avoid, since I had some experience,  which are not so good.

Since the use of SM branch colors I stopped working with Alclad.

You may look at my Mig's or Su"s in WIP or RFI section.

  8. Hallo

@Stickleback, my intention is to make the forum topics more readable.

Ifyou have out of this the FuG 200 in your mind, welcome on board.

Here in this thread we were talking about the FuG 217 Neptun as initially mentioned by @Yank in the RAF.

If Yank could edit this thread to FuG 217.... it would be great.

I have modellers in mind which will look one day after for information on a certain FuG, they should find it.

    1H+AT  is Aufkl.Gr.12

Here is the link to download the manual:

    https://de.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Datei:Hohentwiel_FuG200.pdf

I can translate and interpret this manual as I did the FuG 217 if you want.

What is absolutly new for most modeller now is: The manuals of most FuG are available in the web.

I did not know anything in detail, since manuals were not on hand.

And peolple who worked with them, people who designed them, did never have the whole story, just tales.

  9. Oh, which surprise...

We had once, in 1968 I think, a Nikolaus at the 6th od December,  which came by parschute! He was our priest, from the catholic church!

The whole town was on feet. In Austria,  Carinthia,  St.Veit/ Glan.

A location were British troops had their HQ and were stationed from 1945 to 1955.

  10. The ALT FuG 101 permitted regular flying in 1943 onward down to 10 feet above Sea Level! Over time lap of hours. Valid for all Kampfflugzeuge. Of the Luftwaffe.

    This is a fact.

    How are the counterpartd equiped?

This is a topic for a new thread, please.

Since if the topics are pointing, clear, explicit, we can use it as a lexica! Otherwise confusing!

  11. One more thing:

From operation diaries: If you want to attack a Britisch convoy on sea, the German bombers need to fly few meters (8) above sea level.

1943 from Netherland on Do-217 for example. With a Ju-88 no difference at all!

ALT by FuG 101 only. So, in both directions. For what need of FuG 217? This would interfere the FuG 101!

Just a logic operation briefing shows this!

@SafetyDad, you may be right with your conclusion!

  12. Beside your question:

Check it in the web. Because this a/c could only survie in this climate with curtains inside the canopy! Difficult to model, but to fly in this climate without curtains is impossible for this particular type.
