Am I the only one completely bemused by the cover of March 2017's SAM, or am I being really dense? 1/32 SH Yak-3?

Options 5 & 6 don't make any sense
I do hope this kit gets good distribution and at a reasonable price.

wow!
thanks a lot!
you are working flawlessly!
I really appreciate if manufacturers care for differences, even though in this case some Am from CWS was necessary to achieve he desired result! of course the nose and spine are the most prominent ones, there aer also different wing tips, pitot tubes, correct load out etc! !
I only did the SMT yet, but plan to do the hole familiy in the end....
hopefully Eduard will eventually do the F13 and U/UM models as well!
Yes, the F-13 would be great. Not for me, as I've already built the Trumpeter one (for all its faults), but a Mongol would be tempting!
If I wasn't sick of masking MiG-21s and I didn't already have lots of other kits to make, I'd be really tempted to get an SMT. Eduard did a fantastic job with these kits.

Wow! A bis looking bis!
What a difference!
Would you care to show all 3 "modern" MiG-21s in one photo to really appreciate the subtle-to the non expert- differences?
Thanks!
Not easy, but here you go...

Great work again Jon
Meant to ask in the R post, what shades of metal did you use for nose ring and the jet exhaust areas?
James
Thanks James.
Each model has some different shades in those areas. Some of it is Alclad Steel, Jet Exhaust, Magnesium and Pale Burnt Metal. Some of it is Mr Color 61 Burnt Iron. The nose rings are, I think, Alclad Magnesium or Mr Color 61; I can't remember I'm afraid!

Hi all,
Here is one of three Eduard MiG-21s I've just finished. This is their 1/48 MiG-21bis kit with Begemot stencils and main decals and finished in Mr Color 8 Silver. This was from the Weekend boxing with a Cold War Studio resin nose added. Full write up at https://jonbryon.com/eduard-148-mikoyan-gurevich-mig-21bis-fishbed-l/. Comments welcome, and thanks for looking.

An advantage of working from home......I'll certainly hang to to the Flagon. Actually the Melchett Memorial Man-Cave is starting to resemble Monino now with Firebars, Foxbats, Blinders, Backfires and Fishbeds all over the place.....a heady time for us fans of Soviet Cold War hardware...
Indeed. Pay a visit to my website (www.jonbryon.com) and you'll see I've recently done a MiG-15, 17, 19, 21 an L-29...and I'm about to finish three more MiG-21s in NMF...all in USSR markings What I'd really like is a Flashlight and Fiddler in 1/48...one can but dream!

Hi Jon, I started it many years ago, (as is well known it needed a lot of work so got put aside indefinitely) unfortunately the fuselage was fully assembled, I'll see if the piece can be easily removed without damage and let you know.
Yes, one of them will be appearing in print, not decided which version yet though...
No worries. I am in no rush - I've already built the TM and only bought the Flagon-A to replace part E1 (fortunately I was in China and the donor kit was much cheaper than in the UK)! The latter is unlikely to be built by me for a good many years, so don't detain yourself in fiddling with your fuselage - just bear me in mind if you ever decide to throw it away
I shall look forward to the build article in the future. RM attempted to deliver mine today while I was sleeping off a night shift and I shall have to wait until Saturday to receive it.

Actually Radders, I have a spare Trumpy Flagon A in the stash which will make the job a lot easier than you may think. The forward fuselage/nose, wings and tailplane/fin were standard short nose Yak-28P so almost everything is in the box, just need a sheet of Evergreen, tub of P.38 and the ever needed Elbow Grease...and decent reference images of course.
If you ever get around to this, would you mind donating part E1 from the Su-15 to me, assuming you don't use it? Unfortunately I lost mine I'd be really grateful if you could bear it in mind
Will the Yak-28 feature in AMW?

I'm a subscriber although it's about to expire and I don't intend to renew. That's nothing to do with this new development - in fact, I find it rather attractive - but simply because there are not that many articles in SAM that interest me and the modelling quality is too patchy. I shall return to browsing on the shelf and buying it if useful, but I will have no complaints about missing out on the extra 8 pages. It must be a cutthroat world in the arena of aircraft modelling magazines and I have no problem with SAM trying to stabilise their revenue by offering incentives to people who put their money down in advance.
Best of luck SAM!

Mike, would it be possible to add colour options profiles to the reviews (in general)?
I think it would be a real bonus.
+1. I'd love to see a profile of the NMF example; that would tempt me to buy, if I liked it.

Not seen the resin version, so don't know, but I'm unimpressed with the vac-form, especially as I want a closed cockpit for mine.

This is in my stash too, so I am following with interest. Does your KZ front fuselage set come with vac-formed canopy glass, or resin? Mine is vac-formed, but I know earlier sets came with clear resin parts instead.

7 minutes ago, mostrich said:Your panel colour modulation came out great. Still have to tackle my first NMF and yours' a great reference. One question, though: Why the Trumpeter kit and not the praised Eduard one?
Torben
Because Eduard don't make a MiG-21F-13 😉. I can confirm though that the Eduard kit is worthy of praise - I'm building three in one go at the moment and it is a fantastic kit.

Very nice work, one if my favorite airplanes. Curious, how would you compare this kit to the Eduard version?
Thanks!
Eduard don't make this model of MiG-21, but in general the Eduard MiG-21 kits, which are of later versions, are far, far superior to Trumpeter's Fishbed, both in terms of detail, fit and accuracy. I am currently building Eduard's MiG-21R, MiG-21MF and MiG-21bis and they are going together beautifully. The MiG-21bis, however, has an inaccurate nose, for which I am using Cold War Studio's resin correction set.

Thanks everyone
Thank you for your reply , would you say they are like the Tamiya acrylic paints then which can be diluted by alcohol ? I find your finish fantastic and am considering purchasing the same paint but wish to confirm that they are not enamels .
Is it possible to mask over this paint or does it lifts off ?They are not like Tamiya acrylics. The Mr Hobby Aqueous range is similar to Tamiya, and can be mixed with them, but Mr Color is different. Mr Color are not enamels, but they are pretty toxic; they are not alcohol based, although they can be cleaned with alcohol (but cellulose/lacquer thinners is what's recommended).
You can mask over it no problem, but I make sure the plastic is clean by wiping it down with 100% alcohol.

Splendid model ! , is the Mr. Color paint you have used acrylic ?

Thanks It's the Mr Color range, which are *not* water soluble. I think they are called acrylic laquers. I thin them with Mr Leveling Thinner.
