  1. Pictures to follow later but could airfix have engineered the engines to be any more fiddly if they tried?
  2. Well this never really got off the ground... I suddenly got very busy at university between course things and dealing with issues running the uni gliding club, so the Do217 only got as far as one wing being assembled. I really don't like raised panel lines so I'll be adding recessed lines across the whole model. I overdid them on this wing so they've had to be filled in to reduce the trenches that would make 2000s airfix jealous. I'm home for Easter now and might actually have some time for a bit of modelling. Though I'm quite enthusiastic for the Do217 build, it's one I want to complete at uni because it's easy to just do a little bit at a time on an old kit like this, especially when it comes to the panel lines and general application of heaps of filler. So with the 217 safely packed away in its box, I dug the 17Z out of the stash and made a start yesterday. Not going too overboard on the cockpit. Basic colours should be enough.
  3. The Airfix Do17Z provides two options for the pilot's seat. They look pretty different and the instructions just give it as an option, no indication as to which one to use for which scheme. Does anyone have any more information? Step 3 in the instructions: https://www.scalemates.com/kits/airfix-a05010-dornier-do17z--246321
  4. Fantastic model. Any idea as to why the white strip was added to the fin partially obscuring the insignia?
  5. After a break of a few months from this build, uni and flying real gliders getting in the way, I've finally finished this 1/72 Grunau Baby iib. I'm used to trying to maximise the visibility of gliders, adding orange tape and canopy flashers and other such things. Painting it in camouflage feels very wrong! But it does look fantastic. This is the third of this kit I've built and I definitely plan to do more! I'd like to do some more colourful schemes typical for a wooden sailplane. For comparison, here it is with a 1/72 Bf109. It's not that small really with its high aspect ratio wings. WIP thread here: Next up, finishing my model of the Astir I fly....
  6. Today I just finished up a thread where I was building a couple of 1/72 Grunau Baby kits. I did finish this one a few months ago, but I just realised I didn't get around to posting the RFI thread so here it is. The WIP thread can be seen here:
  7. I'll call that done. I've got a nice little collection of these now On the display shelf now.
  8. Nice and glossy Decals. After leaving the tail decals overnight, the ends hadn't quite settled down as well as I thought they would. I sliced the ends off and painted over those bits. The last jobs will be matt varnish and the clear parts.
  9. Well this thread seems to have made a comeback so I'll put a new post on. Here I am in the back of a glider. And here I am in "my" glider.
  10. I'll add some photos tomorrow, but this evening I've gloss coated it and added the decals. The Czech flag decal from the kit was pretty bad. It tore as soon as I tried transferring it onto the model, and the blue is weirdly purple. Thankfully I have another set from one of the other kits so I used those - bonus, they have a much better blue colour. These also cracked but they're on and after the seemingly thousandth application of micro sol they're finally softening onto the surface properly.
  11. The top surfaces were done in RLM82/83. The fuselage features a mottled edge to the camouflage which was just freehand with an airbrush. Given that I'm used to maximising visibility of gliders, putting camouflage on it feels all sorts of wrong! I think it looks great though. The struts were brush painted and the glider rigged... assembled. I might make a couple of adjustments to the camouflage before I gloss coat it.
  12. Well, back to this thread again. After a very busy period at uni, I'm finally home for Easter and I decided to finish off XA-BK. First job was to add some primer. It was raining outside so I decided not to use my white spray can primer and just start from an airbrush-applied black primer. It took a couple of layers to build up a good coverage of the cream undersides.
  13. It's an excellent little kit. I'm looking forward to the rerelease with decals for a PR spitfire
  14. I'll definitely attend, 20 minute walk for me to get there. Perfect.
  15. 1/48 Vulcan B2? Hopefully.... They like doing big things in big scales and I can't think of anything better. But I'd still be waiting for any scale Vulcan b1 😕
  16. It is not Dark Sea Grey. Medium Sea Grey is the colour you want. The standard wrap around camouflage scheme used Dark Sea Grey, but XH558 was painted in a unique display scheme so don't take anything from standard Vulcan schemes for granted. Other unique quirks of 558's scheme include a non-standard roundel position on the wings (further inboard than standard) and soft edges between the green and grey. To build a model of XH558 from the old tool Vulcan, you'll want to remove the TFR from the tip of the nose and find some aftermarket Olympus 202 jetpipes (though I think you could probably fit the ones from the new tool Vulcan if anyone is willing to give you the spare parts). Also remove the air scoop on the tailcone and only use the starboard ECM plate (the flat plate that goes below the engines). There is a long list of other things to make an accurate XH558 but those should give you a reasonable model of her.
  17. Ah good I should be around for that then
  18. That's next month?! What dates. I have a few gliding trips coming up, I hope I don't miss it
  19. I'm in if it doesn't clash with busy uni times. No idea what I'll build since Vulcans and gliders are ineligible...
  20. I'm not overly interested in 1/48, but a Stuka may see me part with some money.
  21. I don't know for sure but an educated guess would be lights. The Vulcan had a couple of lights next to the IFR probe, maybe these are the equivalent on the v Valiant?
  22. I'm really looking forward to getting my hands on this kit. I'll pick one up when Hannants get them in
  23. My first entry, the Merlin Beaufighter concersion, has been shelved. I'll pick it up again in a while. In the meantime I'll be working on some Dorniers! Well, I will be when I can find the time because I'm so busy with uni work at the moment. I've got quite a few Dornier kits in the stash at the moment. Four of them. If I get carried away I might build all of them eventually, or I might just build one. I've got: The RS Models Do17F, which looks... interesting. I'm not sure if this is really a better starting point than the old kit. Speaking of which... Airfix Do17E/F. I bought this a few weeks ago and I'm actually quite looking forward to the build. I've already done one of these, way back before covid happened. I remember the build wasn't too difficult but involved a lot of filler. Airfix Do17Z. A nice, fairly modern kit. I've got a masking set for it so that's one tedious task eliminated. And finally, the ancient Airfix Do217E. This came with the Airfix Do17E/F and it's what I'm going to start with. The plan is a fairly simple build, I'll sand off the raised panels and scribe in recessed lines but other than that I'm just going to build. Decals have been kindly supplied by another member on the forum which is very much appreciated. I'll update with some pictures when I start it
