Those pictures really show off the Vulcan at its best. I was fortunate to see her fly at Duxford on the 6th September but the weather was nowhere near that good.

Lovely model, Ruben.
I have a very soft spot for the Vanguard as it was the first airliner I flew in, back in 1962.

Daz Greenwood suggests Humbrol 30 for Chieftains and Challenger 1s, so I used the old Humbrol acrylic equivalent, 5030, on my Matchbox Challenger. I was afraid it would be too blue, but the green has a slightly washed out, greyish look when seen against the black. For Challenger 2s he suggests the green from the Colourcoats range. I've heard that the current green is 220 Olive Green, so I expect that I'll use Gunze Sango's acrylic match for FS34097 (H344 I think) on my Dragon Challenger 2.
Joseph
H340 is quoted as FS34097 on the Gunze colour chart. I picked one up yesterday at Coventry.

Great job Phil as usual. I really like your bases too. Do they take you long to produce and are they very heavy?

Top of my list in no particular order, apart from he Might 'ood which would always top the list, are:
HMS Hood
HMS Belfast
HMS Ark Royal III
HMS Victorious
HMS Nelson/Rodney
DKM Bismarck/Tirpitz
DKM Scharnhorst/Gneisenau
DKM Graf Spee
USS Forrestal
USS Missouri/New jersey as originally built
What ever floats your boat?!

I had a kit done by them of a BP oil tanker back in the early 70's. My Dad worked for the company (BP) at the time. It was fairly good as I remember although not quite up to the standards of today.

Great pics! I was there too and my camera went u/s just as XH558 began her display. Typical eh? Never mind, at least I got to see her. well worth the wait. She's supposed to be appearing again at duxford in October, so fingers crossed.

I've got one in the stash too, had every intention of building it for the old man who made several convoy runs as a Merchant Seaman during WW2, sadly Dads no longer with us and the kit remains securely boxed up in the garage.
Another source of detail parts can be found >>>Here<<<
Great looking build by the way Hacker.
Ant
Hi Ant, just looked at the Loyal Hanna web site. These aftermarket guys really have us by the short'n'curlies don't they?!

If you are going to build it out of the box its ok but if you wish to detail it l would suggest to do your research as the kit has issues

This is my kit build as the vessel my father served on during the war for the RCN. l had to do alot of throwing away of kit parts and replacing them with scratchbuild items. On top of that what the version is was not the same as the Fredriction as it was build afterwards and incoperated alot of the improvement done to previous ships.
Many thanks for sharing the pictures. They will prove invaluable when I get round to doing mine. You have done a superb job.

I use predominently lifecolor paints, acrylics like Mister Color from Italy. The Aviation Hobby shop stocks them, and I think they have to be bought in multiples of six as that is how they are supplied by the manufacturer. Also, perhaps suprisingly, the new Revell Aqua Color range is VERY good and can be bought from Barretts in St Neots which I believe is your LHS.

No, I think I shall just build it OOB and place it on the stand. There is always the bath, though; I wonder if Archemedes' principle would send water over the side? I doubt it but one never knows....

As you say, personal preference, only my interpretation comes from close inspection of never-repainted panels from a genuine Mk.I. They were also interior sections, so had not been subjected to direct sunlight, in fact we had to wipe (using water) away layers of dirt. I've found increasing numbers of Supermarine, or Castle Bromwich, Spitfires, which appear to have had the similar shade, while Westland, after its initial use (AR213 being the example I saw,) seem to have gone over to the "normal" colour. Hawker used "Humbrol 78" as did many other manufacturers, but Supermarine seem, for some time, to have continued to use their own colour, which appeared in the S6B cockpit (the one in the Science Museum, not Southampton, which appears to have been B&Q-ised.) If you read the Patrick Stevens book, on the Airfix 1/24th kit, you'll find a recommended paint mix, for a "sickly" green which is nowhere near Humbrol's 78.
Edgar
Thanks, Edgar. I remberseeing the book in the 70's when it first appeared but couldn't afford it. I wonder if it will ever be re-printed?

Many thanks everbody for your advice and pointers. I found the Great Little ships site most eye opening, especially when I added up the prices!

I've got the original Matchbox instruction sheet here in front of me.
There were 3 options in the Matchbox version:
HMS Blubell,
HMCS Snowberry &
USS Saucy.
Don't know what the current Revell options are, but I assume the latter 2 from above.
PM me if you want scans of theMatchbox instructions.

PM sent with thanks

Fair comment Mattie. I'm just biased because the 1960's BOAC Speedbird and BEA red square are my favourite airliner schemes. Enjoy he kit.
Tony

I have recently taken the plunge and purchased this kit, having seen it first in BMW Models, Wimbledon in the early 1980's as Matchbox's flagship kit. It's a big bugger!
There are two options included on Revells 49 page instruction booklet but the kit includes a nameplate for a third one, namely Bluebell. Does anyone know of any references/pictures avsilable for this option?
many thanks in advance.

Personally I think that Humbrol 90 is too pale. humbrol 78 is a more accurate representation and is in fact sold as "cockpit green" but these things are of course subject to personal preference.
Tony

-
Hi Mattie nice scheme but just a thought. What about a BOAC one? Or it could be BAOC as seen on the tower building in Trapped in The Sky.
Tony

-
Phil, do you think any Hood parts may have been used in this construction?

Hi guys , thought you might be interested in these , I started them 6 months ago , very early stage but they are stalled due to other more pressing projects , might resurrect them if enough are interested !!
Paul you're right,
it was the Huskie kit with a bit of Hawk F104 chucked in. Fireflash ( what else!!!)

and interceptor from edge of impact , also have aircraft from 'the uninvited'

And from Stingray,

Cheers all ,
Andy
Love the Fireflash. I had the chance to buy an injection one complete with elevator cars last year; it wasn't cheap but I really regret not taking the opportunity.

the grey noted on the instructions Revell paint a mix of 76 and 57
Ted
Thaks for that.

60s has to be the Lightning. Neither the Harrier nor the Jaguar were fighters: the Sea Harrier was not RAF.
Obviously I agree with you re the Sea Harrier but both the Jaguar and the Harrier are featured in Bill Gunston's "Fighter" book, and I wouldn't like to argue the toss with him!

I've only just seen this Ted. It looks really good; I've recently hoiked out my Tamiya one that's been buried under my stash since nineteen hundred and frozen to death! One thing, are the railings as overscale as they look? I'm not casting aspertions against your work, far from it, it's just that they look rather heavy.

ALERT ALERT ! TAMIYA LANCASTER WARNING

Hi Ian
This problem is a nightmare to fix with the kit parts. When I spotted it I thought it was a simple case of turning the supports round but they don't fit, even with the locating tabs removed. I think the Ed set includes replacement parts. I haven't seen them myself but I know a man who has got one. I'll check with him in the morning and get back to you. I also think the instructions tell you to fit the guns the wrong way up.
