  1. Hi Ross,

Thanks, I look forward to your e mail, I am also trying to find all my GRU notes from the PRO/NA, so i might be able to update your list.

I found one page of my notes which has :-

L7999 arrived 10 june 1940 at GRU Exeter

    L7999 left GRU 7 August 1940.

It should have been in the revised camouflage scheme of June '40, ( sky undersurfaces, etc, roughly like an early 25 Sqn beaufighter)

So i just have to find the ones that mentions the dates for 1941-42, ( then possibly I could use a post Aug '41 scheme at least, or maybe even a post may'42 scheme ).

I have also wondered if it carried the codes, so far the few photos i have seen of GRU aircraft all carry the 'HP' code, so I personally think it was a strong possibility.

    Cheers

  2. Hi Jerry,

Comparing my Magna 1/72 F9/37 with an Airfix Beaufighter suggests you could do worse than starting with cutting up a Beaufighter fuselage. The wings don't look too difficult. Let me know if you would like a copy of the plans from the Magna kit, do you plan to finish it as with the GRU at Exeter ?

    Cheers,

    Ross

    Hi Ross,

Thanks for the offer,I will pm you my e mail address later.

Yeah probably the one at the GRU, ( I was never sure if the peregrine example went to exeter),

An interesting aircraft L7999 , as i was told by someone who was at exeter that the poles of 307Sqn, 'borrowed it for some unofficial night flights, they really liked the a/c, but were told to cease use of it, when powers higher up heard about the flights.

I kick myself as in the 80's I knew someone who could put me in contact with an ex GRU member who had loads of info, but I never did meet him.

If I ever go back to the UK I must visit the NA and browse the GRU files for aircraft serials.

If the beaufighter seems a good option as a basis, I might have a think about the 1/32 revell, a have a few in the garage, I got them very cheap this side of the pond, I was originally thinking of a beafort or brigand conversion, but have slowly gone off the idea.

    Cheers

  3. Hi All,

I've been toying with the idea of a 1/48 gloster F9/37 for some time now, and thought I will throw it out into the melting pot for ideas.

I am trying to be lazy, anyone have any suggestions for which kits I can cannibalize for parts ?

Initial thoughts are beaufighter as a basis for the engines, cowlings and the wings.

but I am stuck on what to use as the basis for the fuselage, One silly thought was a bf 110, might even give the basis for tail parts.

    Comments/suggestions welcome.

    Cheers

  4. Re reading the memo, it states that the fuselage is black on both sides aft of the roundel.

    Hi

What I think it means is .....

the number 5727 is painted in black on both sides aft of the roundel, (like seen in some rcaf photos).

not the rear of the fuselage is painted black aft of the roundel.

    cheers

    'Westland Whirlwind Mk.I „Different Whirlwinds“ - Special Hobby - SH72204

This limited issue kit offers you to build Whirlwinds different from the production machines. The decals and resin parts are designed for the second prototype L6845, the first prototype equipped with 37 mm cannon in modified nose and post-war civil Whirlwind the Westland factory hack aircraft. The second prototype can be built in two different appearances. You can choose from overall green machine with P9 designation on fuselage or overall natural metal finish machine. During the trials of the 37 mm cannon the first prototype L6844 was camouflaged in war colors Dark Green and Dark Earth on upper surfaces and yellow on lower ones. The civil machine was overall Extra Dark Sea Grey with white civil registration on fuselage and wings. The kit contains two sprues with plastic parts, injected canopy and wing lights, detailed resin (including 37 mm cannon) and photo-etched parts. '

  6. Hi

True the ASR was not formed until jan 41

However, some airfield had a lysander for ASR duties, there were some ASR flights formed & 16Sqn had detachments at airfield for ASR duties.

Just googled this, they carried dinghys, photos maybe hard to find, but try googling,etc,16 Sqn or other army co-op lysander squadrons.

During the summer and autumn of 1940 the rescue of fighter pilots

from the English Channel was a particularly difficult problem.

"During the last 21 days of July over 220 aircrew were killed or

missing, the majority over the sea."(7) In an attempted solution the

RAF Fighter Command borrowed Lysander planes from the Army Co-

operation Command and placed them under the operational control of

Fighter Command. These planes were given a fighter escort and sent

out after each air battle. Their chief rescue equipment was a rubber

dinghy carried in the bomb rack. Although with close cooperation

with the Royal Navy some success was achieved, it was felt that too

many airmen were still being lost.(8)

  7. Hi All,

Well just I just bought the whirlwind, fighter bomber version, ( it will probably take a week or so to arrive ),

I will compare it with the airfix and pavla when i get it and post here if anyone is interested.

Roll on the release of the prototype version.

    cheers

  8. John,

The HE-J markings in the fighter version are quite early, aren't they? I think they may have become confused about that aircraft's colours though, as I understood the early Whirlwinds had blue undersides with a black port wing, with sky ID band on the tail and sky spinner being added later. They have it with sky undersides and pale blue ID band and spinner....

    Hi

colours for HE-J look right, it was photographed well in early 1941, ( I think IWM has the photos in their archive ).

price is currently 68.5 PLN appx £15 so I suppose not to bad.. ( correction £16.80 at hannants )

the main interesting one is third release,

    what is it ...

the various protoype options , PR nose, 37mm nose, 12 gun 0.303, mkII nose ?

or the speculative for the USN example used in the USA P6994 ?

or Luftwaffe colours for the rumoured captured example ?

Or perhaps I hope for to much..

I'm glad I didn't spend my money on an airfix 1/24 mossie now...

    cheers

  9. Hi

    Thanks guys for the replies.

I have ducimus C&M, ( couldn't part with the book when I emigrated ), but haven't got 'Model Aircraft Monthly, Vol 7 Issue 1, January 2008', it's now on my list...

A/c mag's are a bit rare this side of the pond due to the cover price, hence many don't stock them, so I miss a lot of articles.

    cheers

  10. Hi All,

Was there a standard RAF aircraft intruder ( not night fighter ) scheme,

Or did each unit just do what they wanted, or was there standard orders for each aircraft type.

Is there a reference book, etc with it all in.

I am primarily interested in the times before Oct - Nov 42, ( when black, nivo, etc, was used on hurricanes, havocs, etc.)

Basically the months before the grey undersurfaces etc was introduced, about Nov 42.

    Any links, comments, welcome.

    cheers

    Jerry

  11. Hi

There might be a supplier your side of the pond, but available from the Roll Models site.

    http://www.rollmodels.net/search/phpsrch2.htm

    ENG48035

Rolls Royce Merlin II,III for Hurricane I, Sea Hurricane I, Spitfire I, Defiant I, Battle I, Fulmar I, Henley, Horsley, Hotspur

Engines & Things 1/48 Resin British Engines

I know they did sell to the UK I bought some before I emigrated, so probably still do now,

They do turn up on e bay sometimes

    cheers

  12. Hi All,

It might just be me getting sceptical, but .......

I have recently noticed old model kits for sale on e bay as sealed,

and I don't remember from my younger modelling days these kits having been sealed,( I just seem to remember some sellotape.)

and instantly wondered if it is a way of selling a model with no liability for missing parts, ( i.e. seller would say 'it was sealed so i didn't know')

Just wondered what the feeling was of other board members, and wether if it is just me getting old & suspicious !!!

It's annoying as it is putting me off buying some models I would like.....

    Cheers

    Jerry
