  1. Hi thanks for the thoughts,I imagine it will always be a bit of a mystery, but I think an interesting option for a stirling model. cheers Jerry
  2. Hi All, browsing a book I had not read for many years, bombing colours by bowyer. On page 156 it states off all the stirlings I recorded in 1943 the most unusual was surely that seen on the evening of july 24 in the usual british camouglage but with usaaf star and bar markings on the fuselage side, she wore only a white star with bars flanking it. presumably he only saw the sides & undersurfaces of the aircraft, I was wondering if any info existed on the a/c and if it had upper wing markings. cheers Jerry
  3. Hi I must admitt I have never seen a full set for sale, I managed to get a some small sets off e bay quite a few years ago, but they are all packed way. cheers Jerry
  4. Hi I will probably get one for the stash, Is the 1/32 HE-III out yet, or due soon. this is on my christmas list hopefully ( plus a house extension ) cheers Jerry
  5. Hi a nice clip, at one time you could download lo-rez film free from the pathe site. there is more footage available from this film,it shows spits scrambling etc,if i remember the link i will post it. the walrus was the one done by airfix in the old days. 276Sqn also had hurricanes but i have found out little on the fittings, etc. link http://www.rafweb.org/SqnMark271-299.htm http://www.cbrnp.com/profiles/quarter2/defiants.htm cheers Jerry
  6. Hi 276 Sqn I can well believe, The stories I heard from ex members were very interesting, it seems they were mostly aircrew who had just come from frontline combat units. Most of their aircraft seemed to be painted just not quite exactly as should be, the few photos of 278 Sqn aircraft I saw also were similar. cheers Jerry
  7. Hi All, Not started my 1:350 traf yet, but noticed when browsing google a wki link which states that the t class had experimental colours, jagged shapes and pale blue. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMS_Trenchant_(S91) blue http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMS_Torbay_(S90) Anyone have any info on the schemes,It makes a nice idea for a different scheme than black cheers Jerry
  8. Hi I second that ..... I have a colour 1942 photo of a spit with a reversed fin flash. cheers Jerry
  9. Hi I think the boston III had the larger tail as well, so you would have to fit a high planes nose to an airfix boston. Maybe buy a highplanes kit, for use as the pattern, then sell it afterwards.... Not sure but i think there was an old airifx mag conversion article many many moons ago....... cheers Jerry
  10. Hi All, Well it seems it was a successful poll..glad I am not alone... Todays impulse buy .... ( 40% off any item voucher for michaels store, my excuse..) ..... was a 1:48 revell P-39, it made to the front door, then the wrapping came off, seems a nice re issue kit by the look of it, all parts present, now re-bagged, and ready for storage until the bad weather,it even came with some free extra stuff, ( pilot & mechanic, underwing guns ) Cheers jerry
  11. Hi only photo on the net seems to be a modified one. cheers Jerry http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/sear...=clnk&gl=ca
  12. Hi My first ever poll anywhere so hope it works. So what do you personally do when you buy a new or old model. open the box or leave it sealed I suppose it is inspired by all those old model kits for sale on e bay still with the original seals/shrinkwrap. cheers Jerry
  13. Hi If the model has been in recent production, revell are excellent with the part replacement service. But if it has been out of production for a while there is not much chance of the part. Cheers Jerry
  14. Hi Maybe browse e bay,I recently got two resin tailplane sets cheap, I had to wait a few months before they came up tho. Likewise there are usually some cheap monogram kits that could be a donor. cheers Jerry
  15. Hi Again just my personal opinion, but i think the prop was a minor item, I just compared the 'larger' merlin prop with a scale drawing of the whirlwind, ( a very course method, I know but it would fit ) I think westlands would have worked this out. The bigger problem was the merlin XX was an updraft carb, the peregrine a downdraft carb, as the whirlwinds peregrine was very tight in the rear of the engine bay, when a merlin would be installed it would interfere with the space needed for the undercarriage, hence the undercarriage retraction problems, mentioned by menesforth, which he claims to had solved. The first downdraft carb merlin was, as I understand it the 130,131,134,135 series engines for the hornet. If this discussion keeps up,and some more input, we should be able to draw a good impression of what the merlin XX whirlwind could have looked like. Cheers Jerry
  16. Hi Kari, Many thanks for posting the photos & info, for people like me on this side of the pond......your post is awesome. Anything else on any aircraft from any of these reports you can post, would no doubt, be really welcome here on the board. Cheers Jerry
  17. Hi Col Thanks for posting the info. cheers Jerry
  18. Hi Well looks like I am the voice in the wildernes then, Just my thoughts but my clue is from the letter. .....because of the solution of certain undercarriage retraction problems, to offer to install in the whirlwind twin merlin XX engines .... Which makes me think it is engines being fitted into the whirlwind to enable westlands to continue the production line, due to no more peregrines available. As I wonder why there would be undercarriage retraction problems with a new design,(welkin),surely most of it should have been designed correctly. Likewise why would mensforth offer something to the ministry that three months previously, had been accepted by them, and had on 9 jan 41 been given permission (and funding) from MAP to build two prototype welkin aircraft. Anway as they say there are always more ways than one to interpret things, it always leads to a good discussion. Cheers Jerry
  19. Hi I will go for the codes being HB, 239 Sqn. individual letter might be an O or B , hard to tell from light. I will try to see if I can find out more. Is there a list of all these reports, identifying which aircraft which report is on. Thees reports are awesome, anymore you can post... cheers Jerry
  20. Hi List looks good... but I suppose slightly o/t, but think I recall something about a welkin fighter bomber with a new nose, just remember there is a photo of the mock up in the 4+ book... high alltitude radar equipped fighter bomber to B5/41,two 1,000lb bombs in fuselage, version cancelled in Feb 44. Just need to find a drawing of 3 cheers Jerry
  21. Copyright of the original letter owner maybe.. either way a free ad for flypast wouldnt think they would mind. It reminds me of the painting they did in the naval dockyards, a boat had to be painted with paint from one paint batch, the numbers on tin lid. If sufficient paint was not available, like in the falklands conflict, the quantity of paint was obtained, then all the different batches mixed together to form a common shade, likewise if the colour was not available the painters just mixed it. Thanks to OP, the letter was interesting. cheers Jerry
  22. Hi No probs with the mis spelling I get it all the time, your theory makes sense, so if the very original welkin drawing can be found, then it will might give a clue as to how the merlin XX whirlwind could have looked, I must see what I can find, (or might phil butler know of any) cheers Jerry
  23. Hi Don't know if link will work, but I typed jumo engine installation and got this. http://www.flightglobal.com/pdfarchive/vie...20-%201250.html typed in ju-88 engine http://www.flightglobal.com/pdfarchive/vie...20-%202103.html hope this helps. cheers Jerry
  24. Hi Thanks for the quote, so if I read the reply from phil correctly, the whirlwind merlin XX development,( welkin) was not the whirlwind merlin XX, me thinks, as the letter from menesforth at westlands implies. cheers Jerry
  25. Hi Edgar, I would love a copy of the signals. 100 octane, R-R seems to differ, I can't post the full deatils here due to how I was allowed the notes. a few extracted words north weald engineers to fit boost cut outs to first three a/c, 100 octane available on station, arrangements made to get suitable spark plugs, I think it was only when the 9lb boost was used it could only be in short burst and hence logged after the flight. pilots notes also gives the info/settings for 87 octane and 100 octane cheers Jerry
