On the Night of the 31/08/1944 Lancaster PD259 (JO-G) and her 7 man crew from 463 Sqn RAAF departed RAF Waddington on a standard Navigational exercise over Scotland.
An Army Observer post noticed a Lancaster in trouble and the crash site was found a few days later and the bodies of the crew recovered.
A team from RAF Waddington, which I am a member of, made a decision to return the most recognisable components back "home"
In the past a number of Props have been removed from the site for memorials. One near the crash site and one at Waddington.
So began weeks of planing and on the 23/06/2009 the plan came together.
We assembled and awaited our transport to the Crash site
A quick 6 minute flight and the site revealed its self
We made up two loads and this is were the Griffin came in handy
And it was all loaded and returned "home"
Apologies for it being brief, but for those going to Waddington Airshow come and visit our stand in 3 Hangar and we can give you a lot more information. You won't miss it, it'll be the one with the Lancaster parts.
