  1. I published my first book this week! It will be available from resellers in the UK/Europe soon.
  2. Special Hobby Sunderland GR. 5 built to test my new decals LHD72039 'Arctic Sunderlands' (they work!). This is PP115 'Charlie' of 201 Sqn, RAF. In August 1953 'Charlie' was almost lost in a glacial lake in northern Greenland after being holed below the waterline. Apologies for the hurried sloppy photosession.

  5. Thank you. This is one Aircam issue I had not seen. The photos strongly imply that while the 210 squadron codes were Medium Sea Grey, the serials were all black.
  6. Seeking confirmation on some details for a forthcoming project. In the era of the Medium Sea Grey over White camo scheme can one assume the following? 1. Both the fuselage serial and code numbers were grey, not red (underwing serial black) 2. White spinners 3. No 210 badge to port underneath the cockpit. I'm 99% certain that this is the case but wanted to make a final check! Thanks in advance.
  7. Sergey Yakhontov (one of the good guys) was the owner of Scale Bureau Models but he did not design the kits and has since sold SB. The designer is Roman Bukhalov, who also runs Komplekt Zip and AZ Resin.
  8. Pedant's corner: I learned from colleagues at Vzlet magazine that the official name in English is also MC-21 (C is for craft). MC-21 is not transliterated to MS-21.
  9. You'll note that's the same decal sheet as the Scale Bureau kit (SB logo in top left corner). I'm delighted Roman finally got this produced in plastic.
  10. FYI, the designer of Ark Models is the same person who created the original resin Scale Bureau La-9 and La-11 masters. The Mikromir efforts were poor plastic copies of the SB kits. The portents are good for the new kits.

  12. I'm in the midst of doing some research on 201 & 230 Squadron Sunderlands based at Pembroke Dock in the first half of the 1950s. I'm trying to allocate specific serial numbers to call signs used during a couple of missions. The most informative books from the era only refer to particular Sunderlands by call sign ('Charlie', 'Dog', etc.). Careful cross-referencing with more modern volumes on the Sunderland ('Ocean Sentinel', Chaz Bowyer's 1989 'Sunderland', etc.) provide most of the my answers BUT there seems to be an information gap when it comes to missions in 1950-54 assigned to 230 Sqn. (squadron code 'B'). I find no reference anywhere to 230 Sqn. Sunderland assigned the call signs 'Charlie' and 'Dog'. Delving further into the subject, I looked at 201 Sqn. (code 'A') call signs and found that none of the them were assigned from the second half of the alphabet. Conversely, 230 Sqn. ('B') call signs started with 'Zebra' and progressed backwards through the alphabet, remaining within the second half of the alphabet. Forgive my ignorance but two questions arise: 1. Was it common practice in the 1950s for (Coastal Command) squadrons based at the same location to assign mutually exclusive call signs? 2. Was it likely that a mission assigned to one particular squadron (let's say a five-ship) could also include an aircraft from the neighbouring Squadron? If the answers to both above questions is 'yes', then I've resolved my conundrum. If the answer to either is 'no', then it casts doubt on the accuracy of quite a few Sunderland books. Many thanks in advance for any informed advice on the subject.
  13. Decals are by caracalmodels.com. It needs a lot of nose weight, especially if you're foolish enough to add a cabin interior.
  14. With 211 you're good to go with the ML kit. As Apex says states, the Bulgarians received both the export (23-22) and non-export (23-18) versions of the MLD. Some sources refer to the former as MLD-E.
  15. Bulgarian MLDs were Type 23-18 second-hand VVS MLDs, i.e. non-export variants (MLD-E). They were exchanged for BG's small fleet of recce MiG-25s. How to distinguish the MLs and MLDs? The BG MLDs featured the 'dog tooth' wing root, carried the standard VPS 50-60 flare dispensers on the upper fuselage, and wore the standard 1980s VVS tactical camouflage scheme. HTH.
