If it was me, I paint the handle as wood and the axe head red.

Who the heck knows - go with your best instinct.

G'day Jeff, I wouldn't know either, and at 1/600 is unlikely to be a concern for me. 🙂 But I'm inclined to lean towards Jon's view - a wood handle and either a red head or red bracket, something along those lines, maybe red on the handle at the operator's end.       Regards, Jeff (the other Jeff 🙂)

Be gentle with me, this was my first ever build

OK, as it was your first build I'll let you off the hook for not including Rose and Jack at the bows, pretending to fly. 😁 But next time  .   .   .   (I might be making a rod for my own back, here. 😁)

But seriously, you have every right to be proud of this, it's a very good model. I've kept all of mine too, those I've done since coming back to the hobby.

And no, I've never done an RMS Titanic, so I'll sit here and admire yours.       Regards, Jeff.

I am just going with the instructions and colour scheme in the box, plus copying a bit from what others have done.  Not really skilful enough to customise stuff yet - still see myself as a modelling novice

Enjoy it, that's what counts. We now know the hull wasn't red!

G'day Ian, we're all novices at the beginning, doing mods and additions I think is something that comes to us over time. As TBJ says - "Enjoy it, that's what counts."

As for the colour scheme, there's been considerable discussion over it. My original build was OOB, including the colours. My second was a modification to her May 1941 appearance, as much as I could, and that included a different colour scheme. For that I based it on a diagram generously supplied by @Jamie @ Sovereign Hobbies which is endorsed by the HMS Hood Association I think. It has a dark grey anti-fouling below the waterline. If she ever had red I can't recall, and if she did I don't know when the grey was added. But even so I think it looks OK - ultimately it's your model, your choice. 🙂 I can post a photo of them both if you wish, for comparison. But I don't want to bamboozle you too much either. HTH and doesn't confuse.

           Regards, Jeff.

I do indeed. Curved turret, although there's a spare 'square' one on the sprues.

G'day again, as they're both supplied it seems Trumpeter have catered for both of her configurations. I take it you know that as built she carried another twin 4.7-inch in 'X' position, which was replaced with a twin 4-inch after Norway to improve her AA fire power. At that time she also had her second funnel lowered and main mast reduced to improve the AA arcs of that mounting. Apologies if I'm repeating what you already know.       Regards, Jeff.

  5.        G'day Steve, your knowledge and experience is showing. I'd have drilled the intake and outlet holes at the ends before tapering the hull fuselage, to give a thicker edge at the rims. But then I have a highly developed sense of overkill and over-strength. You on the other hand have more knowledge in what you're doing, more experience and more faith in the materials you're working with.

I think you've had a win, keep up the good work.       Regards, Jeff.

Wait...wait! Does this mean I can add a Bismark to my strictly Royal Navy stash?

Yeah, no problems, just paint roundels on turrets Anton and Dora oops 'A' and 'Y' turrets. You might have to paint out the swastikas on the foc'sle and quarterdeck too.  😁

    Regards, Jeff.

I just have to be diligent about proof reading.

It does mean that I find dyslexia jokes very funny.  Dyslexia lures!  :D

G'day, I proof read my own posts several times before hitting 'submit' but errors sometimes still get past me. (And no joke, I had to type 'hitting' three times just now, although they were just typos.

And yeah, I'd heard that Dyslexia lures, KO! 😁       Regards, Jeff.

    Proof read, much?

In all seriousness though - sclae - I'm often transposing letters, or doubling the wrong letter, such as godd instead of good. Easy thing to do for most people I would think. But me - I think I'm just going senile. 😁       Regards, Jeff.

    And we sank her!!!

It doesn't appear so. It seems she he was boarded and captured, and ultimately returned to service in the RN, like sailing warships in days of old. This was certainly a well-kept secret though, because I had no inkling of it until now. 😁 Regards, Jeff.

Not for some years I'm afraid, got to get retired first. But it is in the (large) 'definitely do' stash, not the (very large) 'maybe' stash.

G'day TBJ, Retirement I can highly recommend, particularly from a modeling perspective. (Any perspective, really 🙂). I guess in time the project will be moved to the (not so large) 'imminent' stash and then in due course the (smaller) 'very soon' stash and ultimately the (very small) 'next model' stash. 🙂 Whenever you do her I'll be very interested in following the build.

           Regards, Jeff.

For the hold down straps, I used . . . wait for it . . . dental floss!  It's waxed, so it can easily be pressed down to follow the contours of what it is resting upon.  I'm thinking it might also be a good candidate for fire hose.

G'day Jeff, that's a very clever idea. It's surprising what materials can be used for modeling. Regards, (the other) Jeff.

I do find cheap Belfasts are a great source of better parts.

G'day TBJ, I agree, and in the past I've bought a few Belfast kits for precisely that reason. But they're not so cheap here anymore, and I've learned how to make some of the parts now. I'll be very interested in your 1942 what-if version when you do her. Any idea when?

Just starting this model, will use your pictures to help me work out how to paint it.

The colour scheme I used was based on one supplied by @Jamie @ Sovereign Hobbies, one of the paint gurus here, although I think I made a mistake at the top of the main mast.

    Regards, Jeff.

    BELF16g120 hull painted HMS Belfast 16gun jm2

Gidday Beefy, that second photo is probably the best I have showing the overall look. I can take another from a lower angle if you like but this should give you a bit of an idea.

I used Humbrol Hu31 for the antifouling colour. HTH.

  14. G'day Beefy, this hasn't taken you long, and it looks quite a potent vessel.

I did a whiffed 16-gun Belfast a couple of years ago with a greenish antifouling lower hull for a bit of variety in the display cabinet. I can post a picture of it here if you wish so you can see what the colour scheme will look like. But obviously no need if you've already tried it.

    Regards, Jeff.

  15. G'day, and thank you for your comments, guys. I've completed the shafts on DKM Karlsruhe.

    KARLS350 shafts fitted

I re-inforced the joins of the struts with 5 minute Araldyte epoxy glue. As you can see, the rudder is done too, and I'll probably fit her next. I think the jobs after that will be to drill the scuttles in the hull, make and attach the anchors then start painting the hull. As some of you mentioned, the hull is very smooth now. Those black lines you see are due to news-print. When I glued in the strakes I wiped excess glue off with newspaper, leaving black ink marks. That is why the hull looked so 'dirty' before I commenced the fill/sanding cycles. No matter, they'll paint over later.

I'll also make my own screws but I can do that job later too. So thank you for your interest, comments and responses. Stay safe and keep on modeling. Regards to all, Jeff.

  16. G'day @thekz, I would imagine the bridge is always manned, but generally not by anyone wearing a dress or skirts. 😁 Depending on the location and hence level of threat some of the AA guns and directors would also be manned in time of war I would think.

But as I understand it, hands-in-pockets is a no-no in the navy. HTH. Regards, Jeff.

P.S. - that second photo is interesting. It looks to be USN with the three-gun turrets. But there has been quite a bit of discussion on the weathering of timber decks here and elsewhere. That deck looks darker than I thought it would be, I'll have to keep that in mind in the future. Thanks for sharing. Regards again.

I cut out the relevant deck shape in Evergreen 2020. I glued some 1mm by 3.2 mm strip under it in a T shape. After the glue had dried I use the more flexible .5mm by 3.2 mm stripe and simply bent is around to get the shape of the compartment.

G'day Pieter, I discovered Evergreen styrene stuff s few years ago and it has opened a whole new world for me with model ship alterations. I didn't know there was a 2020 available. The finest 'planked deck' I've found in my part of the world is Evergreen 2025 V-grove. I've used it for cruiser decks in 1/600 scale and yes, the planks are a little over scale but I think they still look OK. I've been following your build here as I'm always on the look-out for new ideas and tips for ship scratching and alterations. And I certainly like what you're doing here.

           Regards, Jeff.
