Special Hobby 1/48 Spitfire Mk. VC Malta Defenders
darson replied to KiwiSteve's topic in Aircraft WWII
Ok ladies for those that are interested here are some sprue shots, instructions and some dry fitting shots http://modelforum.upce.cz/forum/viewtopic....=57&t=25075 My two cents worth, I think the kit looks fantastic and I will be certainly picking up a couple. I am not particularly fussed about the accuracy of the markings or not as I rarely use kit decals and won't be for my builds of this kit. -
Peter I have no idea what color they were bu these long range tanks were made of a rubberised material and were disposable. The standard fuel tanks that are visible in the bomb bay of a Mossie are a red brown color.
-
Quality wise the Eclipse HP-CS is fantastic and does everything I want and more. I have owned Paasche, Badger & Aztek and none of these can hold a candle to the Iwata IMHO anyway. Most of the time you get what you pay for in life and this is one of those times, but if you are looking for a good deal have a look at Dixie Art they have been in business a long time and are very reliable.

That's some fantastic looking detail for such a small kit and you've done a great job with the assembly, it looks absolutely spot on. I don't mind if the updates are slow just keep them coming Cheers
-
Mark the re-popped Italeri kits are ok but you need to go in with your eyes open and realise you are not getting a Tamiya kit. I have built a couple of these re-pops (F-4G, X-1 and AH-1G) and they do have raised panel lines for the most part and the details are a little soft and not up to the usual Tamiya standards but they do build up reasonably well. I agree with wadeocu, the Revell kit of the Tornado is by far the best in 72nd scale.
-
Neat looking model Mark and well done for experimenting on your paint scheme.
-
She's looking awesome Sean, I can't to see the finished product . By the way that must be a huge model, I'm used to working in 72nd scale for heavies and even they turn out quite large. Ian, nice job on the Airfix Lanc
-
It will dry almost instantly and cure in about 30 minutes

This is not going to help at all for 1/72 scale but for anybody wanted to model sand/desert/dirt in 1/48 or larger, have a look at the Games Workshop ground work they sell. The grit is particularly fine but also contains enough little bits and pieces of larger material to break up the dead flat look of just fine grit on its own.

Let me start out by saying that I love Tamiya 1/48 aircraft kits, I think they are simply the best there is. Now deep breath, as much as it pains me to say it the Tamiya Harrier is a complete POS and should be avoided at all costs. The Airfix kit is also a POS but it scapes in ahead of the Tamiya in almost every area. There I said it. As destore said the best result can be obtained from kitbashing the Monogram AV-8A (fuselage, wings, undercarriage, nozzles, airbrake, cannons pods and pylons) with the Airfix GR.3 (RWR cone, intakes, drop tanks and the front section of the fuselage, clear parts) Cheers
-
From all the reviews I have read the Italeri kit is supposed to be the most accurate overall. That being said if it's accuracy you are after then a kitbash of the ICM/Airfix/Italeri kits would probably yield the best results.

Either a straight coat of ALCLAD 2 Aluminum or Model Master Metaliser Aluminum with a satin coat over the top does a great job. But the ALCLAD is definitely the preferred option though. Cheers
-
Paolo the color you're looking for is RAL 8012 Primer, however I have seen nothing but constant arguments on what this color actually looks like. Myself I use Vallejo Terracotta as this is a close enough match for me. Cheers
-
Nick I usually just use Tamiya Hull Red XF-9, it looks the job to me.
-
Geez you guys are being ripped off royally, this kit has been on sale at the usual Asian on-line sites for a month now for about £14.
-
I'm not generally influenced to purchase based on cover art but I must admit that this one from Eduard certainly did nudge me in the direction of their Hellcat combo On the other hand really bad or cheap looking cover art can put me off purchasing a kit.
-
Matt send me a PM with an email address I can send an attachment too. I have a PDF at home which is just what you're looking for. Cheers

Aside from the fact that "I" would have added some oil stains and streaks around the back of the engine cowling using some diluted lamp black/burnt umber oils wiped in the direction of the airflow with a clean rag, your build looks very nice Tim. I must admit I really like the way you've done the prop it looks very realistic. Cheers
-
Ai Carumba Glenn that's a seriously nice piece of modeling, great job :worthy:
-
Very nice work the front office it looks fantastic. Is there a harness attached to the pilot’s seat because it doesn't come through in the photos? Btw, which scheme is the bird going to be painted in, I love these late war German birds with their patched together paint jobs.

Liam, no offence to Airfix (or any other manufacturer) but in either 1/72 or 1/48 scale Tamiya & Hasegawa rule the roost when it comes to P-51s. This is the easiest kit to come by and features both prop types, two canopies (Standard & Dallas) as well as a choice of exhausts and will build up to exactly what you want with the right decals.
-
Jesse, airliners aren't usually my thing but any way you cut it that's a nice looking model

Martin the Zimm looks spot on as does the white wash, I like the way it's not uniformly the same white across the entire vehicle. The only piece of constructive feedback I have if you don't mind is the fact that the tracks show no wear or shiny spots where they have come into contact with the road. To simulate this involves is nothing more than scraping an HB or 2B pencil onto some paper, then rubbing your index finger into the scrapings and brushing your finger up and down the part of the bottoms of the track where it would come into contact with the road. Cheers

Just to clarify what denstore said it is only the side feed Eclipse models will suffer from this issue, the gravity feed models CS & BS do not. This 109 was painted free hand with the 0.5 needle/nozzle combo (I had stuffed 0.35mm nozzle at the time) Also as a HP-CS user the paint cup on top of the AB does not obsure your view because you don't use an AB like sighting a rifle, you're always looking from above. Just as a side note if you get and Eclipse HP-CS you can get the needle, nozzle & nozzle cap for the 0.5mm HP-BCS and swap out assemblies if you have large areas to cover. I have this 0.5mm combo and it comes in quite handy occasionally. Cheers

Ok for a first time air brush user who wants something that you can grow into my personal choice would be the Iwata Eclipse HP-CS and get the £100 compressor. The Eclipse is an excellent generalist airbrush that will do whatever you want and will only be limited by your skill, it's also dead easy to operate and maintain. Also, grab one of these in-line moisture traps it works in conjunction with the one on the compressor and will save you a lot heart ache. You can get them for about £10 on eBay here
