  1. I built mine in Hoverlloyd colours, but the tail logo decals disintegrated. If you don't do the Hoverlloyd livery, could I have the tail logo decals please?

     

    As mentioned above, fitting the skirt needs some pasticard as there are gaps at the back. Also it was difficult fitting the transparent roof.

     

    Not enough cars in the kit, so I added some N-Gauge cars by Oxford Diecast.

  2. The Revell Rotodyne kit is far superior,  albeit in 1/87th scale ( but close enough for 1/72) and can still be easy found. It has full interior with passenger seats, passengers, luggage and an opening side panel so you can see the interior. It also has a removable rotor head engine panel and depicts the Rotodyne at a later stage in development in 1960 with additional central tail fin.

    My film mash up between a NOVA Percival Procter and a Revell Stuka.

    Lots of filler, sanding, wet n dry and brasso. Cockpit is part Stuka, part scratch. Prop modified Airfix Kate.

    Everything else is scratch or from the spares box.

    Time to pop it in the photo booth.

    Very nice - built for the film but never used as it was found to be too difficult to fly. Instead they used radio controlled Stuka models.

    If Xtradecal had done their research properly, or waited for my Warpaint book on the Beaver, they would have provided decals for the wing markings. This Beaver should have ROCAF roundels above and below both wings and white Chinese serials beneath the wings! Bestfong decals No.48069 provide the correct decals in 1/48 scale.

    I haven't been able to find much in the way of reference material for this green Whirlwind. Are there any photo's out there? There is a similar machine on the cover of a Warpaint Series publication on the Chickasaw/Whirlwind. Is this WV223?

    I'm interested in any external details specific to this Whirlwind, such as the cabin access step etc. Also, if this is WV223 she has additional windows in the cabin door.

     

    I believe WV223 in this green scheme (Green Parrot) was a VIP/Admirals Barge aircraft. Would HAS.22 be the correct designation? Maybe HCC.22 ?

     

    I'm thinking of buying the Warpaint book. Are there any other pictures inside?

    As author of the Warpaint book on the Whirlwind, the cover photo is WV204. Inside there are close-up starboard side photos of WV223. Yes, both were designated  HAS.22s

  6. I am curious about what scheme you are doing. Why are you keeping us in suspense?  I have four Beaver kits in my stash, one will be Army Air Corps as flown in by me,  one in United Nations colours, one in the short-lived South Arabian (S.Yemen) Air Force camo as seen at Hurn before delivery  and one in a polished  metal and dayglo orange USAF scheme with colourful tail insignia. Go on, spill the beans on yours?

    I think " Rich Royal Blue" was just a colloquial term to cover it!  From  all the above I think we can deduce that the main body colour was BSC108 Aircraft Blue which was 'a smidgen' lighter than BSC110 Roundel Blue. Therefore Delta Jets at Kemble got it right on their Hunter T.7. Very sad that that aircraft no longer wears the " Blue Diamonds" scheme and was repainted in a boring over silver scheme by the new owner!

    It was while the squadron was detached to Cyprus (January 1961) that the first aircraft began to be ferried out from the UK, painted in the new and distinctive Rich Royal Blue colour scheme. The colour scheme for the Hunters had been carefully chosen by Brian Mercer: Treble One was Black. White gets oil-stained beneath the fuselage. Red is the Belgian team's colour. Orange is an aesthetic disaster. Yellow is for Training Command. Green is considered unlucky. But Blue is the RAF colour.

     

    Flt Lt Brian Allchin had joined the squadron in February 1959 and flew with the reserve team the following year. He went on to fly with the official team in 1961 and 1962 and had a personal interest in the selection of the colour scheme: It was befitting a premier team to have its own individual colour scheme and there had been various experiments, all based on shades of blue. One trial involved a white aircraft nose and cheat-line, which extended the length of the aircraft, together with variations in the rake of the fin flash. In the end, it was my aircraft (XG186) that was completed in the ultimate scheme by a team from Cellon, with the remainder of the aircraft being repainted at Cambridge.

     

    Thanks Dave - I'm glad you came in on this.  Despite that quote, that still doesn't define what shade of blue Cellon used?  As Paul alluded to, why would it be necessary to use a different shade of blue when BSC110 Roundel Blue was readily available?
