  1. Small update, and probably the last for a few days as I'm away with work until next week.

Sanding and filling continues with the wings "almost" done. assembly and dry fitting of the tail last night too. I had a few concerns about the fitment of the new engine exhaust section no meeting up with the tail, but it seems to have worked almost perfectly. A little work still needed though

More filling and sanding required :P

  2. Evening all,

so, the last bit of butchery took place last night..........the gun pods were removed and replaced with the resin replacements......the under with hard points were removed and "filled" in.......and the starboard side pitot tube was removed.......along with the Port side as well...as I'm an idiot. Despite marking the one I wanted to keep, reminding myself "not to remove that one, you need it" Brain went "OK!" dremmel went...."nah mate......thats gotta come off" so it came off and I didn't realise until I picked up the other wing and proceeded to turn the air a very vivid shade of blue.......So This particular FAW.2 will not have a pitot tube at all!

    Ho hum....so piccies...

    DSC_5936

Fitment took a little effort, but with determination and lots of trimming, sanding, trim some more, sand a little here, there.....they just about slotted into place.

    DSC_5939

Underside with the first round of filler....its currently on the third application. As the Vallejo liquid putty dries, its shrinks just a little bit.

    DSC_5938

The down side to this modification is a colossal panel gap in the port wing.....bare in mind this is a dry fit in the wing spars, thats as far as I can push the wing on. Upon closer inspection, it appears that the forward cockpit section  has caused the port wing to be roughly 0.2mm lower causing the panel gap. Some head scratching on how to fix this to be had.

Anywho's, enjoy...not much bench time over the next week or so...this silly thing called "work" is getting in the way.

  3. 12 hours ago, Lord Riot said:

Looking good! You’ve done well beating that nose into shape. Disappointing it’s such a bad fit, not sure I’ll buy one now.

Its worth it if you want to do the conversion, it just feels, especially the nose section, slightly too big, as in a 1/50 scale rather than 1/48th. The engine section and wing part are almost perfect, if you sand them down to the correct size. I fear I may have sanded off a little too much.

If you're thinking of doing it, I'd recommend it. Just take your time with it.

  4. Not a great deal to report on at the moment.

Air intakes fitted and some sanding and refilling under way. Long way to go yet, but easy does it.

Test fitted the wing as well, the undercarriage compartments are installed as well. Next step in planning the butchering of the cannons and leading edges

    DSC_5912

I think I may be able to get away with trimming the underwing stores mounting point to the left of the cannons and filling/sanding where required?

    DSC_5917

I know that the starboard side pitot tube also needs to be removed.

    Onwards!

  5. Thank you for the offer, but It's all ok. I plan on using the supplied red blanking plates for the air intakes to show the Jav as it was as a gate guardian. Unless you know, you'd never know.

I was also planning on sanding back the vortex generators as XA801 did have some leading edge generators, but just tiny little nubbins. The big job will be the replacement of the cannons and the fire streak hard points. All the tips for where the flaps should be positioned etc. are all a big help. thank you :) will definatley be re-reading this back when I get to that stage.

  6. Dang, and thanks @TeeELL I would never have known that the radar set up in the back seat was different, though it does make sense thatthe equipment would match what was in the radome.

As for the diameter of the air intakes, I am aware of the difference, however, this is something I'm not massively fussed about, plus I'm a little unsure on how to change them. Thanks though :)

@binbrook87 yup, haven't done a WiP for a while, and thought this may be an interesting one for everyone too. Work will continue, probably whilst catching up with night 2 of Wrestle Mania XL. :D

  7. Right then campers!

BIG update incoming.....I have managed to work into place to the best of my abilities, the forward cock pit section and WOW does it not fit. Panel gaps you could drive a bus through. and better still....its not even flush. The starboard side is approx 1mm higher than the port side. I have tried to wiggle it into place with very little improvement. It is also around 1mm wider than the cockpit section that comes with the kit. So lots of sand, blow, *cough on resin dust, test fit & repeat.

    DSC_5895

The under side isn't much better either.

    DSC_5896

The panel gap here is also around 1mm high than the rest of the fuselage.

    DSC_5894

Work commenced with very very carefully cutting off the tail section at the last panel. Above is a test fit to see roughly what it would look like before taking the butchers knife to the kit.

Measure it 5 time and cut many more! My approach was to cute the rear section off very close to the last panel line, then sand, test fit sand some more until I had a nice straight(ish) line across the kit top and bottom. Unfortunately no pics prior to filler, but you do get to see my partial finger print and probably skin that was left behind when gluing into place. Much to my wifes hilarity seeing me suffer, then the inevitable "pop" as I released my fingers from the glue.

    DSC_5909

Top section. As you can see, plenty of filling and sanding required now. So thats the next few nights sorted. 😕

    DSC_5905

A bit of a close up of the ridge that has formed underneath. As you can see, not the best fitment. I am considering trying to sand it so it looks like it tapers into the fuselage? Ideas are all most welcome.

    Cheers

  8. Looks fantastic so far! Really like the ejection seats too, done a great job with them. I think I need to improve mine a bit now :D

Just our of curiosity, roughly how much weight did you place in the front to keep it from tail sitting? looks to be around 150-200g?

    • Thanks 1
  9. Thanks for the words of encouragement :) Much appreciated as this will be the most ambitious project I've undertaken, and I have a 3 year old! :D

Well, last night the cockpit was finished off and buttoned up. really nice fit from Airfix too. Cant really see all that much now though.

Now as for the conversion kit, @Selwyn there are no smaller intakes included in the kit. Something I need to find. What is included is this little lot. Now all washed in warm soapy water, ready to be trimmed and "fitted"

For some reason the nose cone is cut at a 30 degree angle(ish) which will cause a rather nasty seem line to smooth out.

    DSC_5885

I compared it to the FAW.9 cone and forward section and it is about 1.5cm smaller that the FAW.2 nose cone. What puzzles me is that why doesnt the conversion kit just have a smaller nose cone that would fit directly onto the existing Airfix kit forward section?

The wing tip section on the right of the picture are the FAW.2 cannon sections and the leading edges that do not incorporate the underwing hard points. Lots of cutting and filly to be done.

The photoetch parts are templates to ensure the vortext generators are then place back in the right place on the wing surface. however, from looking at the upper wing surface of the Cosford museum Javelin, there doesnt seem to be any? Its all lovely and smooth?

    1200px-Gloster_Javelin_RAF_Museum_Cosfor

However, XA801 in guard duty, does have some slight little nubbins there that I may be able to get away with perhaps?

  10. Small update....The Alley Kat conversion kit showed up today. Need to look through it properly ad to see what work is involved.

From the looks of it, some minor leading edge cutting on the wings for the cannons, and a minor but of cutting for the exhaust dove tail. The shortened nose cone looks like its a direct replacement for the existing section supplied by Airfix.

More to follow when I get to these points of the build.

  11. Morning campers!

So work has begun on converting the Airfix FAW.9 Javelin to the earlier FAW.2 and air frame XA801.....former gate guardian of RAF Stafford. The conversion kit has been ordered and should (hopefully) arrive today.

I've started to look into what the major differences were from earlier variants, leading up to the mark, FAW.7 that went into service. Thunder & Lightning - Javelin History has been a great help. The table of differences should help making those modifications. Though it should be noted, I will do as much as I can.

So far, only the tub has been put together. I'm not 100% happy with the straps, and I think some further work will be needed. Not super accurate with the control surfaces as most pictures I have found are in black and white.

Some Krystal Klear on some of the instruments may help and painting the "straps" a darker shade may also help.

    Anywho's, enjoy :)

  12. Evening all,

Another commission build...this time the 2009 MPC 1/25 scale 1969 Dodge Charger - the "General Lee" from the Dukes of Hazard

A tough build in places and I really dont like the polystyrene used by MPC, but hey ho, worked out nicely in the end. Plenty of fitment issues, including the roll cage that simply didnt fit. then there was the mounting of the shell to the chassis......nightmare! but got there in the end.  Paint was done with Tamiya rattle cans, and a little bit of airbrushing. Along with some light weathering using Tamiya weathering pastels.

    Enjoy!
