  1. Ready for inspection today is the Revell boxing of the old Matchbox Walrus in 1/72 scale. I would have preferred some pre-war British markings for this one, but didn't feel like paying nearly as much for decals as I did for the kit, especially when I wouldn't use the rest of the sheet. In any case, here is a French Navy Walrus, stationed at French Naval Training Base Hourtin in the summer of 1948. Apparently Walruses were used as training aircraft for pilots going on to fly the Sunderland. One mistake I did make was to align the top roundels with the ailerons, and not with each other, but it isn't terribly noticeable, thankfully. I may yet try to use a wash for the first time as well, as I have to imagine these aircraft were not the most well maintained / cleaned. Thanks all, Stay safe, Tweener
  2. Update - the Shagbat is now in RFI!
  3. Last night, decals went on to the top side of the Gladiator, and look like this: Sadly, the scheme I had wanted to use, from a Microscale sheet, shattered as soon as it left the paper, and so the kit decals were used instead. They didn't settle the best, but as I didn't have any decal softener, that is how they will remain. This morning, decals went on to the bottom of the wing, and the spray lacquer is currently drying. Next time you see this Gladiator will be in the RFI threads. Thanks all, Tweener
  4. Thank you both! The first coat of paint went down this morning and the second will follow early tomorrow. Hopefully I will be applying decals by this time on Friday. It really is a surprisingly nice kit, but I think I prefer the Heller offering with a slightly better cockpit and one piece lower wing, though the emptiness on this one did give me a nice chance to practice scratch building.
  5. After some more work today, the fuselage was closed up, and the wings and tail surfaces have been added. After the wing struts are added, painting will begin. Thanks all, Tweener
  6. In the mail today came the first of two 1/72 Gladiators by Matchbox, and on the way is a Microscale sheet that covers Gladiators and Furies. While paint dried on the top of the Walrus, I got to work. From the spares bin came a CMK resin seat for a P-40 and a control stick from a Hasegawa Ki-46, and these were promptly added alongside some inaccurate-but-better-than-nothing sidewall framing. An equally inaccurately shaped instrument panel as added to the back side of the parts that form the top of the nose. In the coming days the proper interior paints will arrive and work will continue. For now, it looks like this: https://www.flickr.com/photos/112759894@N05/50793640181/in/dateposted-public/ I likely won't spend any more time detailing the cockpit / adding the radio rack behind the pilots seat as I doubt what little I have done will be seen anyways. This first Gladiator will be finished in the kit provided scheme of an aircraft from No.73 (Fighter) Squadron at RAF Station Digby in 1938. The second will use an option from the Microscale sheet. That's all the progress so far. Thanks all, Tweener
  7. I was looking at the Matchbox Swordfish on Ebay while writing the post - corrections will be made!
  8. Greetings all, The first build of the new year is the Revell (Matchbox) Supermarine Walrus, which will likely be finished in post-war French Navy colors, as provided. Construction progresses fairly quickly, as there are only 3 seats in terms of interior detail. The interior was spray painted flat back and one of the hatches closed to hide the emptiness. The tailplanes fit so well that they actually clicked together without glue, but were glued anyways. The tail struts were all the correct length and fit into their holes well. In about 3 hours times, the Walrus looked like this: After this had been left to set for a while, construction continued this morning, and now she looks like this, ready for paint: The first layer of silver will be sprayed sometime tonight, and hopefully she will be all painted by the middle of next week. That's all the progress so far, Thanks all, Tweener
  9. In a way it does to me as well, but I think the appearance of Camo may just be the result of the weather, as I would expect the top of the bottom wings to be painted as well and to my eye, they only look wet.
  10. Having seen that Special Hobby is set to release a new tool 1/72 Albacore in the following months, I was curious as to the accuracy of a profile and decal option suggested by Print Scale: Option 11 suggests that some RCAF Albacores were painted in overall black, and I have seen a model or two built in this scheme as well. My question concerns the accuracy of this suggestion, as I can't see any reason why Albacores would be repainted so late in their service life / as they were withdrawn from operational use. I also can't imagine that the Albacore would have operated as a Torpedo bomber at such a late stage in the war, so I'm curious as to what the aircraft may have been used for if the scheme is indeed accurate. Insertion of agents would be handled by Lysanders, and recon could have been accomplished by far more capable types. Any help is appreciated, Tweener
  11. I'd been eyeing one of those sheets but couldn't find it on Ebay like I could a few of their RAAF Sheets. Now I have to decide which I think looks better... Thanks, Tweener
  12. Thanks all for the quick replies. I'm definitely a little bit bummed to hear it likely isn't an accurate profile, but I may well carry on and try to build it anyways once I get a few other Gladiators built. I have an old Microscale sheet in the mail that covers Glad's and Fury's and plan to build some of the other options seen on the image above. In the meantime, I've got Revell's ancient 1/48 P51 to find RNZAF markings for... Wish me luck, Tweener
  13. Today I have come across this collection of paint schemes for the Gloster Gladiator - I was curious as to the accuracy of the Sea Gladiator painted black, that allegedly shot down a Heinkel. I have never seen a Gladiator painted in all black, though I have seen a Gauntlet painted this way. Does anyone know about the accuracy of this scheme? If it is accurate, it is definitely going onto my list, though I have 3 other Gladiators, a Walrus, and another Fury planned first. Thanks all, Tweener
  14. Good news! With some careful painting I was actually able to correct the red vertical stabilizer. Even better, I sourced a set of Microscale decals for Gladiators and Furies as well as a MB Gladiator to use them on. Both should arrive shortly into the new year, alongside the MB Walrus that will likely be finished as a French Navy machine. What can I say, I don't care to spend as much for a single decal option as I did for an entire kit.
  15. How hard do you think it would be to correct the kit to represent a DH.60M? Great job modelling "Jason" by the way, I really should consider building more civilian aircraft when I get the chance.
  16. Mine as well! I've since built a Siskin as well, and failed to build their Norseman, though I plan to try that one again eventually.
  17. Does anyone know how well the old FROG DH.60 Gypsy Moth builds, and would it be appropriate to mark it as a DH.60M with the included decals, or would other work have to be done to make that accurate? Thanks, Tweener
  18. It was one of the first kits I ever built when I first got into modelling about 4 years ago now. I've tried several other biplanes, and only have a few to show for it. 🙃 Somehow the MB Siskin was probably the easiest of the bunch, and I look forward to doing another of those as well.
  19. Lately I have found I have something of a preference for older kits, and I look forward to getting my hands on more Matchbox, classic Airfix, and Frog kits. Next up should be the MB Gladiator and possibly their Walrus after that.
  20. Hello all, Today I have a finished Matchbox Hawker Fury - a lovely kit really, and one I look forward to building again. Markings represent an aircraft from the RAFs 43 Squadron "Fighting Cocks" in the mid 1930s, but the red on the vertical tail is incorrect - I've learned not to always trust the instructions as a result. Otherwise I'm happy. The photo isn't great but in the absence of any real sunlight lately, it'll have to do. Happy holidays all, Stay safe, Tweener
  21. Hello all, Today I have the Matchbox 1/72 Hawker Fury in progress. Like most MB kits, the build process is quick, and I had this much done after a few hours of on / off modeling last weekend - In the days that followed, paint was quick and easy thanks to Testors enamel spraypaints and MM Insignia Red, and decals went down over the course of yesterday and today. At first I had lost one of the upper roundels, but it was found this evening and applied. The red on the tail is not accurate, as K 1933 should have it and not 1938, but I trusted the instructions before I found the photo showing otherwise, and my hands are not careful enough to correct it without painting over the rudder stripes as well. All that remains now is the prop, and eventually, attaching the windscreen. Hopefully more British Bipes are to follow throughout the early new year - I have a MB Gladiator on the way, and soon I plan to have another Fury or two as well. Perhaps another Hart / Demon will follow as well if I can get my hands on some ModelDecal sheets. Thanks all, Happy Holidays, Tweener
  22. I'm looking into building a Hawker Fury of the SAAF - but need roundels. Does anyone know where I might be able to find any? Thanks, Tweener
  23. Other than the Print Scale sheets for Hawker Furies and Gloster Gladiators, and the SBS sheets for Gladiators, I can't find much in the way of decals for interwar British Biplanes. Mostly I am looking for decals for Furies, Gladiators, and Demons. Does anyone have any recommendations? Thanks, Tweener
  24. I had a feeling I had marked it wrong, so without a great reference, I simply made a generic Texan scheme that combined a few photos I had seen. I do plan to make another Portuguese T6 eventually, so I will save the photos you have shared - thank you for them! Best, Tweener
  25. Good evening all, Today, a FAP T-6 Texan operating from the 3rd Air Force Base in Portugal at some point in the mid 1960's. Academy has made a lovely 1/72 Texan that is kitted by Encore with a wide range of markings options, so it was tough to choose which I would go with. Ultimately I chose Portuguese as I have a Hawker Fury on the way that will also have Portuguese markings and which shares the Daschund marking of this build. Once I had underwing serials, I expect this one will go quite fast. I haven't yet decided if I will install the entire canopy or just the forward two sections, but I am leaning towards just the forward two to ease painting. In any case, I haven't got any clear parts glue just yet, so it will have to wait. Thanks for checking in, Tweener
