  1. Happy new year everyone from Surrey!
  2. Working my way through this book of reprints of classic noir type Black Mask stories. It's over 1100 pages and weighs a ton when trying to read it in bed but well worth it!
  3. Some lovely models there Tony. Looking at the Heracles reminds me of my late Dad's first job on leaving school was as an apprentice working on the carburettors of the Heracles and similar aircraft at Croydon airport.
  4. That's lovely. Thanks for the potted history. I actually flew on that Viscount between Tangier and Gib in around 1978 (?). It sported the old red and white livery then IIRC.
  5. That's lovely. Looking at your Caravelle reminds me I've never built an airliner and I think it's probably time I did.
  6. Panda cars as they were known.
  7. 1952 vintage here and it sounds very like my childhood. First Airfix model my Dad bought for me was Lysander too! Great days, spent with real, not virtual, mates.
  8. RIP Denny. Another '60's stalwart gone. 😪
  9. Nothing too exciting but I picked up an Airfix Tomahawk from Aldi when out shopping with the Mrs. £6.99 including glue, paints and brush - bargain!
  10. Excellent vision? You can't be that old. 😉 Joking aside I'm not surprised younger people have no idea about Airfix. Mine only know because of my messing about with the stuff. ☹️
  11. RIP Terry. A real character and great manager. I wish they'd let him stay on in the England job.

    Bench time

Time at modelling in the last few months - nil. I'm retired so I could spend as long as I like but lately prefer the creativity of music and guitar playing.
  13. I've had a gmail account for years and nary a problem?
  14. ^^^^^ Lovely bits of ephemera and the swastika was indeed considered a lucky charm in the past. I collect old pre-war cigarette cards and one appears in the Wills set of Lucky charms from 1923. Unfortunately the meaning of the once lucky charm took on a much more sinister connotation from 1933 onwards and that is the period under discussion.
  15. It certainly is a crime in some European countries and many others to display a swastika. Kits don't usually come with the insignia and IMO don't need them anyway. The Nazi swastika is a symbol of a repellent regime and we are better off without them. Of course Hindus used the symbol far before the NSDAP but I think it is fairly easy to differentiate between them.
  16. Just do what I do build a kit out of the box. No internet reference and no extra parts. It's how I started as a youngster and how I do it now. All the fun - none of the heartache.
  17. I've visited quite a few model shops in the US and I think that's right.
  18. When I was a kid everyone's Dad's I knew had served in the forces in WWII. Coupled with the constant retelling of heroic stories in the like of The Victor comic I used to get weekly or my favourite Air Ace books it's not really surprising that those of us of a certain age have such an interest in WWII.
  19. The Mrs is welcome to damp old shed/s. I've got a centrally heated upstairs room for my hobby stuff. 😋
  20. In proper nostalgic fashion, here are a few pics of model kits from an RAF Flying Review dated September 1958.
  21. A great CV from earlier British films too. RIP David.
  22. That looks snug. A perfect retreat.
