  1. As your nephew is at secondary school I would expect the overall project to involve more that just a simple trench. They will probably be looking for more "interpretation" than realism. The basic trench could be polystyrene packaging, plaster and lolly sticks but you would need to express either the emotions of war, or the reality death & mud. Take a look at https://www.iwm.org.uk/history/the-powerful-western-front-paintings-of-the-nash-brothers scroll down to Oppy Wood, 1917. Evening, Add a few twigs for dead/blasted tress etc, cooking for corrugated iron etc..
  2. 2. What age group? Having worked with various KS1 / KS2 children and craft projects this is key. When I read the thread heading I thought this was going to be a 1:1 recreation!
  3. With voting for 2020 not too far off I am trying to see what potential GB's are out there, especially those that are near the magic figure of 30. I hope that this does not fall foul of the canvassing rules, (if it is, I amp hapy for the MODS to delete it) but I thought it would be useful to have a thread where those potential GB's that are nearly there could be highlighted. So if you know of a proposed GB that has over 24 votes at the moment - perhaps you could add it in this thread.
  4. One source of information about the tender might be the current Hornby Model. I put "Hogwarts express tender" into the Bing search engine and this came up with a few images that might be useful. Keep up the excellent work BBS and BS - this looks like it will be a masterpiece.
  5. The tale I am recounting here is true: Returning to my workbench to work on my P-38 Lightning, I was touching up some paintwork. As I now use Mig-Ammo paints my technique is to place drop on a piece of scrap plastic as a pallette. Having none to hand I took a recently used one out of my waste bin - this was a butter carton and guess what the cannon were in it! For that to happen five things were required: the cannon fell into it it went into the bin the right way up I did not have another" palette" to hand I picked that carton out (others were available) This all happened before I emptied the bin into the wheelie bin this evening Truly the modelling god(s) were with me today.
  6. It's the aftermath that is the issue. I worked according to the instructions - which may have been a mistake. If you take the front fuselage section off before joining the halves together and put the bomb-bay doors in place there is very little to form a firm joint between the remaining parts. I am now up against the rules of chemistry! I need the two halves to join quickly enough, add the nose and then for the putty to set. The question is how long should I allow for these to occur? o short and the joint will break and/or putty cannot be smoothed. Too long and I run out of time. Position at noon BST. This build has also fallen foul of the carpet monster in that while cutting the cannon from the sprue they went walk about. I should be able find a suitable donor from either my spares or a previously built kit.
  7. My B-36 (currently in the "year I was born" GB was purchased when it first came out. I started build the cockpit and glued the wings together (well under the 25% rules for GB's) and there it stayed, I have moved house nine times since then, so the longest time it has sat on a single physical S.O.D. is about 6 year, but overall 38-39 years.
  8. Entering the final week, I thought I'd better start this one. Fairly confident of completion by the deadline. Main issue will be the amount of filler needed as the fit is not as good as other Frog originals I have built and there is the requirement for a clean join for the nose. The MkIV VI requires you to saw through the fuselage. As you can see on my tablet, one reference is the excellent Wingleader magazine. I cannot say it is good value for money as it is free and in my view one of the more interesting of magazines.
  9. Externally it looked OK but the weird order of construction meant the undercart bays and bomb-bay went in at the end! This has now been done and it now sits on it's own four feet. plan is tomorrow to attach last few parts, check out the painting. Decals applied Monday?
  10. Into the final week. A little work to do on this one but this evening I had to concentrate on the B-47 and get the Mosquito started. So just a placeholder. back to work on it tomorrow
  11. Thanks for individual replies. I get many of my books from Abebooks https://www.abebooks.co.uk for example if you enter "b-36 peacemaker" into key words you get a large number of results, Even if you don't buy books through this site you will get an idea of market value. Also keep an eye out on the bargains section in Britmodeller as you often get posts when "The Works" are selling Haynes Manuals cheap.
  12. @VinsterYou state that aircraft are your main genre but does your modelling have a theme? I only model aircraft from my local area and over the years I found that the acheap source of information was second hand magazines. Most Aircraft museums etc seemed to have boxes of old magazines. Fairly quickly a reference library of Old Aviation News and various modelling magazines was built up. Unfortunately a down sizing house move 9 years again mean most were diseased off. Ironically a few years later we moved to a bigger house, we are now downsizing gain and I am rationalising my library. My core reference books are now The Action Stations Series A number of the Putman books on Aircraft of the RAF Probably because of my age and reading the Airfix Magazine etc in the 9160's. There are four authors who for me are "go to" Michael J F Bower Alan Hall Bruce Robinson Roger Freeman However most of my research these days relies on the internet there is a huge amount of info' out there. Just learn to use google properly. I note from your other posting that you are looking at building a B-36 - apart from getting the squadron numbers of UK based examples from Action Stations all my research for that model comes from the internet.
  13. Due to an unplanned, but required, break, I have missed the deadline for this group build. However work will continue on my return and I will at least post the final result for this and the B-26 in part three.
  14. The GMC truck is now part of this diorama which has progressed to
  15. As my deadline for this GB will be slightly earlier than the actual end date I have decided that my three diorama idea was a step too far. Therefore the Truck and wagons have been combined into what should be a single gallery entry.
  16. I am also am working on the result of a moment and we are on our fourth 16 cubic yard skip - no local authority tip for us. However we have had contactors doing some of the work. Perhaps we should propose a new Group Build "for "domestic projects that keep us from modelling" - that would at least give us a deadline.
  17. I had this issue as well. It only seemed to occur if I pressed a key while a picture from Flickr was changing from a URL to an image. Since I became less impatient it seems to have gone away.
  18. Although this evening was spent on other GB work (D-day deadline only being eight days) I did make time for the sprue shot for the Mosquito
  19. Thanks for that reference I have now ordered them.
  20. Could we come to a compromise? Fir many years I lived very near Hunsdon Airfield. I would like to do this as an aircraft from 464 Squadron RAAF which took part in the Amiens raid. The problem is I need to source the Squadron Code letters SB + A,F,O,T,V (only one aircraft required). I will put a post in "Wanted"
  21. Despite my saying that the P-38 would be my last entrant in the Frog GB, I have reached no 8 with this Proper laid our sprue shots to follow.
  22. @Mjwomack has this proposed that might help @JOCKNEY
  23. That's one reason I wanted to build it in this GB at the time the Frog Mosquito came out (1968) the only game in town was the Airfix one dating back to 1957. The Frog version was a revelation to me as a teenage modeller. Its surprising that it took until 1972 for Airfix to respond and that nearly forty years later we have not had an update!
  24. Courtesy of Kingkit I am now in the position to add F187 Mosquito to the build list. The build thread should be set up this evening.
  25. Depends how you define a stash - I don't count my boxes of part completed kits as a stash - others are free to disagree. I did see Blitzbuilds as a route, three times this year, as stash reductions, but I have already purchased two kits for the Christmas build and last years Aldi/Lidl starter sets provided three more.
