  1. That's phone boxes... I presume the smell @Mjwomack refers to is the small of Ozone etc from the pre electronic control equipment that was located under the seats, or perhaps the under arm smell of strap hanging commuters who had not used Lifebouy soap that day.
  2. It's outside my preferred area of operation in the same way the Feltham Trams are but I need something in my never ending Diorama to show the East side of London and nothing speaks better about London than Trams, Trolley buses (the cost of the only white metal trolley bus that would fit in this GB cannot be justified) and tube trains. For the final diorama element I want some sub-surface stock that ran on the District line but as a place holder on the model and something that fits this GB, my entry is. The 1938 Tube Stock. This is a cardboard model bought out some years ago by "Street Level Models" but now available as a free download from the London Transport Traction Group on https://www.lttractiongroup.co.uk/downloads.html All the pieces have been cut on a Cricit machine.

  4. For my second entry, and third build, in this GB I present my "sprue shot". sorry about the shadow - tomorrow I will reveal the subject and change the thread title.
  5. And the prize (if there was one) goes to @Farmer matt, as this will become part of my WW2 never ending diorama. As to the scale I did a trial and the look the part. Obviously once the windows are meshed the ceiling will be even less visible.
  6. A little progress over the weekend, as I have mentioned in other threads we have garden of 3/4 acres so at this time of the year it takes some work. However with it raining about 15:00 and the longer evening I did get some work done of the Felthams and also a new build for this GB. I found a pot of very old Humbrol Pullman cream and to my surprise it went on well, tow coats at the moment will need at least one more. Also made a start on the floors and seats. The reason for painting the cream first is to avoid the tricky masking that would be needed if the painting was done after the build. Now all I have to do is mask the entire cream area and the windows as one.
  7. You may have seen Felthams as LT sold a number to Leeds. Apparently Leeds adopted this darker red as it was hard to overpaint the LT red with the old Blue Cream livery used up to the arrival of the Felthams in LT colours. As to my build - well warner weather and lighter evening mean that I could get round to spraying undercoat on outdoors. One question do I model the ceilings or leave them as is? At the moment the indents for the chairs is obvious but it will not be once the kit is built - that's one i'll sleep on and leave to tomorrow. Many years ago I purchased this Not used to date but I do have a use for it in this build - to be revealed latter unless someone guesses how it will be used.
  8. Nothing to do with patriotism - the F-27 was issued by Airfix in 1960 around the time of the HS. 748's first flight at that time the F-27 was in airline service. Fairly soon after than Airfix lost their appetite for 1/72 airliners and moved into 1:144th scale. If Airfix had continued with 1/72nd airliners we could have seen some interesting kits.
  9. Took a look today and although the plastic is has more of a shine on it than the other sprues, if certainly doesn't seem softer.
  10. The old issue of the rear pony/Bissell truck - the LNER A4 Pacifics did not have a rear "pony truck" as used in most models. The rear carrying wheels were in Cartazzi axleboxes which were part of the frame but allows some sideways movement. The new Hornby A4 has the correct set up. How Hornby still seem to sell these at £29.49 when pre-owned ones go for as little as £10 is a mystery.
  11. Sprue shot Some of the parts are for the Leeds version of the tram and will not be used. The 2nd kit is identical apart from the body sides which have the central doors.

I am currently increasing my stash of such kits for next years 200th Anniversary of Railways GB.
  13. A problem with the Spitfire is the huge number of variants, especially if you include the Seafire. To me some Marks have more aesthetic appeal than others. To me the Vb Tropical is ugly and the clipped wing models are just wrong. Then there is colour is a Pink Spitfire as attractive as a silver one?   14. Althoughthis is a very subjective subject my vote would go to the Supermarine Spitfire SWIFT. It might also be the only aircraft nominated that had.a leading role in a Feature Film as the Prometheus in the movie Sound Barrier.
  15. And so back to the build I can think of terms for whoever designed the nacelles for this model but will not use them here. Three parts and no locating pin, One interesting thing is that the older model (the off green one) has twin banks of pistons on the engine and the nacelles have to be build around them but the newer mould that only one back and this can be inserted from the rear after gluing the nacelles, As both these will be displayed "in flight" one glaring issue is that you can see right through the fuselage. so I purchased a carpet contour tool To enable me to cut out a simple bulkhead to block the view.. Next stage is to provide a basic cockpit floor and an enclosure for the nose wheel area.
  16. Over month on and this project has come back to life and now with added value. Due to the extra work needed to report back on the builds for two GB's I am merging my "mega twin" build into this thread. So this has been closed down and this thread has added value.
  17. A reference for those of a certain age - rather like the Norwegian Blue of Monty Python fame this build is not dead but has been sleeping. However the effort of maintaining a dual B-26 build over 2 GB's has added to the effort required, so I this build will now be merged with the Frog Squad GB one. So it's good bye to this GB. Been good knowing you.

  20. Although my intention is to continue with plan A things have moved on. I was at the Bury St Edmunds Model Railway show today and saw these on their club sales stand. Designed in the late 1920's and mainly built in the 1930's, at £5 each they called out to be purchased as an entry in this GB. More details in the build thread when I establish it. I know @Enzo the Magnificent is also entering a couple of trams one of which is a Feltham, so I hope he does not mind me adding these two.
  21. Although my GB activity during 2024 has been somewhat slow, with one not started and two stalled. I have been looking for suitable subjects for this GB what .would fit into my WW2 era project which includes a lot of railway modelling and use of none injection moulded materials. As the 1930's were the golden age of design for London Transport my thoughts went towards the Charles Holden designed buildings of the time. During my research I found this which is Gants Hill station construction site, just pre-war which would make an interesting diorama. However I do have a couple of ideas of how to progress to a formal offering and hope to have something to add to the GB prior to the start date, Hint see https://www.lttractiongroup.co.uk/downloads.html
  22. Another great railway choice for a GB, just make sure there are some entries left for next years 200th Anniversary of Railways GB. As to the line I quoted. This came up as a subject for discussion at a zoom meeting I was at last night and the general consensus was that the white roofs did not turn grey because of lack of care (aka cleaning) but rather the paint used at the time reacted with the sulphur etc from the engines to create the revised tone. This discussion was about other railway colours that suffered from the same problem and the difficulty of accurately painting railway rolling stock.

  24. I was about to give the same answer. I never paint the frames in one go. My method is to mask the longest (non overlapping) frames and brush paint them and then tackle the remainder. For some transparencies it can take 3 sessions but it has worked for me. Some years ago I invested in some Tamiya Masking Tape, for Curves, and that has been a great help in this approach.
  25. In two letters No. My ongoing project is to only build aircraft that are relevant to the Essex/Suffolk border. I have two B-26's as current WIP, one here and one in the Mega Twin GB. When visited my LMS at the start of the build the only "local" B-26 decals they had in stock included a Boxted example so I purchased those. but I was assured that he could source some for a Earls Colne example so last week I picked up set for Truman's Folly from the 453rd BS. The only problem is that the missions flown on the decal sheet are for the period when the squadron had moved to Beaulieu. Luckily there is a film of the aircraft at Earls Colne so I can adjust the decals. Work has now finally started and like the other B-26 it is destined to be shown in flight over my period railway, as such I am attempting to motorise the prop's so I am starting with the engines and nacelles. On this kit nearly came unstuck. Both kits come with the nacelles in three parts and for the other GB I found that I could construct the nacelles and then insert the engines, thus making it easier to get the motors in. When I came to this build You can see that the engines in the earlier kit have two banks of cylinders and the later model has one as such the engines for the older model cannot be inserted after the nacelles have been glued together, As far as I can see that is the only difference between the kits, all the other parts are identical. Over the next couple of days I hope to get those engines turning.
