  1. I can certainly see what Dave means and it does make sense, especially as 60 Sqn were operating so far from the UK and so late in the Javelin`s lifetime,....good spot I say! I have thought myself that some of these later Javelin`s could have had grey undersides and when I first saw this same photo a few years ago it seemed to strengthen that feeling.

  2. Cannot say those markings are boring - except that everyone has them for the Mustang III... Those from Egypt sounds nice though! Gotta check this kit out.

Is it 100% identical to the Tamiya one?

When I said boring,...as you correctly assumed,.... I meant that everybody does this aircraft as if it was the only Mustang III ever to wear RAF roundels. Granted it does look nice with its D-Day stripes but ,.....there were plenty of others and the Polish Mk.III`s even feature on the aftermarket sheets! Thankfully Revell chose one of my favourites as their second option and it is nice to build something different for a change, Don`t get me wrong,...I`ve nothing against Polish aircraft and I have lots in my collection,....plus I`d really like to build one of the PK or PD coded overall silver Mustang Mk.IV`s,.....I did get the ICM Mk.IV for this reason but the decals broke up in the water!

I woundn`t say that the ICM kit is a direct copy of the Tamiya kit as the breakdown is slightly different in places,...but it is most certainly based on the Tamiya kit!

    Cheers

  3. No worries Nick, good luck and just take our time, you`ll enjoy it I think? Think like a Welsh miner and be on the lookout for pitfalls to prop up with sprue before they collapse and you`ll be fine.

I have a few Hurricanes in the stash earmarked to be Navalised, always get a bit twitchy with this sort of subject as their are so many variants (and so many "experts"). I need to do some serious research then take the plunge!

Don`t worry Oz,.....I feel just the same about building Harriers as there are so many `experts' and very knowledgeable people out there,..but just go for it. I`m far from being an `expert' or even very knowledgeable about the Hurricane myself but I like to think that I`m learning all of the time so if I can help in any way just drop me a line,

    All the best

    Tony

  4. It is definitely the ICM kit and although it has the obligatory and quite boring Polish decal option it also has a nice AK coded 213 Sqn option from Egypt/Italy, which appears in the Osprey RAF Mustangs and Thunderbolts book.

    Cheers

  5. Thanks again everybody,

    Tony,
Those look great. Like you I love the Hurricane, and especially the "Sea" version. And to my mind Pedestal is one of the most extraordinary stories of the war.
Any thoughts on how the Italeri Hurricane stacks up against the Hasegawa one? I'd be interested to know your thoughts....
    Nick.

Cheers Nick, personally I prefer the Italeri Hurri to the Hasegawa one due to the fact that it captures the bulky look of the real aircraft better than the Hasegawa one, but there is not a lot in it. The Hasegawa kit is much easier to build, especially as the Italeri kit seems to have a lot of unsupported parts which seem to just float around, this is accentuated by the rather thin and `floppy' plastic. However some sections of supporting sprue `pit props' cut to the right size to strengthen these areas do help a lot, the nose area and the wing behind the gun inserts are two areas which need this attention that readily spring to mind. Some people say that the Italeri spinners are wrong and although the long Rotol prop could do with thinning down a little (or you could buy the nice Freightdog resin spinner instead?) I do like the De Havilland pointed spinner which is much better than the puny effort in the Hasegawa kit.

For a Hurricane Mk.I model I would definitely go for the Italeri kit but for the Mk.IIc there is not as much between them, although the Italeri kit still nicks it in my book,.....especially as you get an etched brass harness, canopy hand rails and the canopy can be opened,..plus the cockpit has much better detali too and the final look of the completed model is more realistic in my view.

    Hope that helps,

    Tony

PS- I meant to add that the tail wheel in the Mk.I kit, including the Sea Hurricane is pants, just look at my model, it is far too thick but as the plastic is very soft it has obviously been bulked up to prevent it from breaking. Maybe Aeroclub could re release their white metal jobbie,...what do you think John?

  6. Some great information there,...cheers lads.

I believe that Malta was the first place to employ Hurri-bombers too,...by fitting Beaufighter under wing bomb racks to the Hurri Mk.II,...maybe the ever inventive Sqn Ldr. Louks had a hand in it? He was the fellow who upgraded the Sea Gladiators, first with the armour plating behind the pilot, then `added boost' on the engines which were later upgraded to accept the three bladed Blenheim props, plus he also conducted 6 gun experiments on the Glad`s (although Gloster had already proposed this and had conversion kits available if customers required them). He also `tweaked' the blades on the DH propellers of the early Hurricanes by altering the angle of the blades to give them a better climb rate in return for a longer take off run and was also responsible for the lightweight recce Hurricanes,.....plus maybe lots of other things too? The Spitfire bomb racks have a whiff of his ingenuity all over them?

    Cheers

  7. Tony,

Like I said.....Kinetic are one of the newer manufacturers......They may have been around for 4-5 years but this is still relative when compared with the likes of Airfix, Hasegawa, Tamiya and Revell-Monogram. I know they have had some problems in determining the best way to get their kits distributed in a marketplace where distributors are coming and going at regular intervals in a still turbulent economic environment and I imagine this is one of the reasons why the UK Marketplace is not receiving its 'fair share'...I've seen the kit in sale in Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands for some months now. Hannants do seem to have encountered problems obtaining this particular kit in spite of having had few issues with the rest of the range - puzzling. One of our LMS has had to deal with three different distributors over the last 18 months in trying to obtain Kinetic kits.....Its still very hit and miss so I my advice would be to scan the web and once you have ascertained a reliable stockist, established a good price and weighed up the risks associated with import duties etc (assuming a non-EU stockist) go ahead and buy.

    Cheers

    Mark

    Cheers Mark,.....wise words,

  8. Go with wrap around scheme, I loved that on Tornados so would look cool on the TSR.2

    Julien

Yes that's my preference too,......I`m looking through the spares box for some suitable decals,.....probably 16 Sqn and applied as per the Tornado because as you say,....Tornado`s did look cool in that wrap around scheme. Plus,...being an RAFG aircraft I could get away without adding the refuelling bulge onto the side (available from Freightdog) as the probes were removed from Buccaneers,....one of the reasons being that there was no way that they could refuel at low level behind enemy lines to extend their range,.. so all fuel had to be carried. Wasn`t another reason that the Bucc probes were removed because they were considered dangerous due to some of the emergency runway barriers in use on the continent?

Cheers again everybody,...I`m not really into WHIFF`s but I`m looking forward to this one,...come on postie hurry up!

    Tony

  9. Generally speaking,....I would say that the very first batch of Spitfire`s for Malta were Vb`s, but then Vc`s became more prominent through until the end of 1942 when Vb`s began to appear once more. I`ve not checked through the serials to check the variants and have only judged this by viewing photos.

There I have stuck my head above the paraphet,......OPEN FIRE!!!!!

    cheers

    Tony

  10. The undercarriage legs on this kit are very short so you might want to try and lengthen them,....I mounted mine onto a section of sprue and they looked much better! The nose looks a little bit short too,.....although I have not measured it or anything? The dropped flaps are a very welcome feature.

Although it is nowhere near as good as the Eduard kit,....a nice model can still be built all the same, so good luck with yours,

    Cheers

    Tony

  11. I`ve seen photo`s of at least two Hurri Mk.I`s in Rhodesia which were both painted silver, one had a pointed spinner with either a De Havilland (Mk.I) or Rotol (Mk.X) prop plus a red and blue rear fuselage band and the other had a Battle of Britain era blunt spinnered Rotol, both aircraft had Vokes filters. I think the pics may have been in the Francis Mason Hurricane book?

    Cheers

    Tony

PS- Your photo looks like a Canadian built Mk.X (basically a Mk.I!) to me,..... just my hunch!

  12. Thanks for your kind words folks, I`m glad that you like them, it made the effort of trying to revamp them and not scrap them worth it!

Nice models as usual, Tony. Where did the replacement prop and canopy for the 1/72 Sea Hurricane come from please?

The prop was from the spares box and came from an old Matchbox Hurricane IIc while the canopy was from Aeroclub. They are both better than the poor kit items, although I`m not all that happy with my attempt at the canopy frame lines, I was experimenting with painted tape!

    Cheers again everybody,

    Tony

  13. Hello Folks,

My latest batch of 7 models had passed down the assembly line but fell at the last hurdle when the final coat of matt varnish dried like a streaky milky mess,......arghh,...we`ve all been there haven`t we! Anyway out came the fine brushes and I reapplied the camouflage scheme around the existing decals and the roundels were touched up where needed,....., these are the first two to be touched up and although the finish is not as good as they were originally,.....I`m just glad that they are finally out of the way and in the cabinet.

    First of all here is the 48th scale Italeri Sea Hurricane Mk.Ib in the markings of Z4550/6G of 800 NAS aboard HMS Indomitable at the time of Operation Pedestal, the famous convoy to Malta. It was the regular mount of the CO Lt. Cdr. J.M. `Bill' Bruen who achieved ace status flying this aircraft during the vicious fighting above the Pedestal convoy on the 12th August 1942. In reference photos it is a well used Sea Hurricane with extensive exhaust staining down the side of the fuselage;

The next Sea Hurricane is the 72nd scale Mk.IIc from Revell which has had the wing chord narrowed by clipping the trailing edge and the propeller and canopy have been replaced. It wears the markings of NF699 `Libby' of 824 NAS aboard HMS Striker, early 1944 and again had to receive a total repaint around the decals; SeaHurri72-1_zps52c576c7-1.jpg

Hope you like them despite the repaint jobs,

PS- Just noticed that the foot step from my Mk.Ib has snapped off,.....damn, another grapple with the carpet monster looms!

  14. Got 2 last monday from TK MAXX £9.99

The standard tsr 2 kit with a new sprue with stratos bits ...and a full set of prototype marking ....

name="alpine_modeller" post="1473135" timestamp="1385738123"]are they not still available from Airfix and Amazon ?

Yes that's what I`m hoping to find,......I had heard that they were available at some places much cheaper and I don`t fancy paying full price.

    Ta,

    Tony

Edit- Checked their website and bought one for £9.99 PLUS £2 odd postage, saves driving around looking for one tomorrow especially as her indoors would be looking at clothes and Christmas stuff!

  15. Thanks

Yep we still have our own currency like you across the channel.

Mr Stoppel is an elderly gentleman, so if you need 100% responds you'll need to call the store by phone the old fasioned way. Can only recommend the decals. Quality is top. As long you don't use any decal solvent. It has to be said it isn't needed anyway. since the carrier film is nicely thin and decals naturally snuggles down in recesses on there own.

    Thanks Henrik,

Good to hear that the decals are good quality,....I`d never heard of them before but there are some very nice sets on there. I once had the chance to parachute from a RDAF green and dayglow Dakota which was visiting the UK and it would have satisfied a boyhood dream as I`ve always wanted to jump from a Dak ever since watching `A Bridge Too Far' as a 7 year old but as we got our chutes on the poor old girl went u/s with an engine fault and the jump was scrubbed,...damn it!!

    All the best

    Tony

  16. Thanks lads,

`Great modeller',.....mmm,...don`t think so Neil,.....especially if you could see the latest batch of 7 models that I`ve just finished,....the final coat of Humbrol matt varnish left them covered in a white streaky mess!! I`ve spent an extra week trying to hand paint around the decals to restore the camo but they still don`t look very good,......I wish that I had just left them as they were!

    Oh well,

    Cheers

    Tony

  17. Tony if you need RDAF decals for the PBY. Then there are these available here http://stoppel.dk/shop/1-72-decals-142c8.html

Thanks for that, I`ve had a look at the site but they don`t seem to have pictures of the decals on the web page, which is a bit strange. I`ll contact them and ask for some info.

I have a soft spot for the RDAF having been detached to Vaerlose in the early 1990`s although we went all over the country including a few of the tiny little islands,.......what a beautiful and spotlessly clean country,...but bloody cold! I like the fact that lots of houses flew the national flag on flag poles in the garden. At Vaerlose I used to sit on a hill near to the accommodation which overlooked the airfield and remember seeing a Saab Draken doing touch and go`s into the low cloud with full afterburner,...fantastic. I saw a photo taken from the same position at the end of WW2 and apart from the lines of FW190`s and Ju88`s the place had hardly changed!

I also note from the website that Denmark seems to have retained the Kroner over the Euro,....brilliant!

    Cheers

    Tony

Since my last comment here, I googled Cousteau and the PBY. Very interesting stuff . But it seems that the Revell kit is very rare(TONY!). I have one built and is in need of repairs and a fresh set of decals.

Tony if you're reading this , if you are going to build your kit as a Danish one can I have first dibs on the Calypso decals PLEASE!!! :evil_laugh::winkgrin:

Yes mate,.....I`ve PM`ed you,....send me your address and I`ll stick them in the post! I may actually have 2 of these kits,....I`ll have to check!!

    Cheers
