Boxing day's post: Clash of Biplanes...
tonyot replied to claudius's topic in Ready for Inspection - Aircraft
They both look brilliant, well done on a pair of great models of two highly charismatic aircraft, Cheers Tony -
I only added the Finnish Bllenheim as it was the clearest photo that I could find showing the early British syle side windows with sliding panels, I did also include a photo of a British Blenheim below. The Bolingbroke that represents a Blenheim in the RAF Museums Battle of Britain Museum appears to have incorrect plain windows without bulges and this may be where the cock up occurred? A simple bit of research should really have cleared this up though. I agree with Kari that some RAF Blenheims did have fabric taped over the glazing and this was most likely for waterproofing purposes as Blenheims were notoriously leaky while flying through rain but it was not found on all aircraft and was very much an `in unit' fix which was increasinglu seen towards the end of the types service. Merry Christmas everybody, Cheers Tony

After a quick look through Ospreys Blenheim Sqns of WW2 & also their Defiant, Blenheim and Havoc Aces books the blister windows appear to have come in during mid to late 1940 and all of the IVF variants in the book, where the window area can be seen, appear to have the blister windows fitted. I`ve checked my photo`s of Bolingbroke`s too and all but the very earliest ones (which had the framed style) had the bubble window, as here; Cheers Tony

That is some `first year',....they are all great but the Spit 19 and TSR.2 just pip it for me as an aircraft modeller! Cheers Tony
-
Very nice, the Lightning takes my vote although I love the paint job on the Hornet and the Mega- sore- ar-se! Cheers Tony
-
Yes the bomber should be OK from this kit, just leave off the gun pack. There are actually two styles of gun pack provided so one (the smaller one) can be used on the Mk.I too! Pity about the lack of side bubbles on the windows as otherwise it appears to be an excellent kit. Cheers Tony
-
I think that it is more a case of,.....can you demonstrate a period Blenheim which actually has the style of side windows depicted by Airfix? At least one (1970`s) restored Bolingbroke appears to have similar windows but from actual WW2 photo`s of Blenheim`s I can only find the following styles; Early side window without bubble and with framing, as seen on the wonderfully restored Finnish example; Later style side window with varying sized bubbles; Airfix appear to have gone for the latter style of window but forgotten to add the blister! Cop out or simple mistake? Cheers Tony Edited for spelling!

Glad you like it Giorgio and I agree,....Airfix have got the look right compared to Academy! Cheers Tony PS- That is a lovely civvy Spit above Yankymodeller,...nice one.

Hiya Mike, WIP Thread here; http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/234940087-airfix-spitfire-pr19-converted-to-spitfire-xiv-fighter-in-148th-scale-icm-wings/?hl=%2Bspitfire+%2Bxiv Cheers Tony

The new Airfix Blenheim Mk.IV is lovely and comes with two types of ventral gun pack but annoyingly they have decided to depict the later style cockpit side windows yet left off the clear bubbles which were present here! The earlier style framework could be painted onto these clear sections I suppose but why go for the later style and then forget to include the clear bubble? Very Strange! Cheers Tony
-
Cheers for clarifying that,.....my first thought upon seeing the artwork was `very nice- but those codes don`t look right'! I was checking up to see if Airfix knew something that I didn`t but now you`ve cleared it up. AV was used by 121 (Eagle) Sqn and continued after the unit became the 335th FS of the USAAF. Tony

Count me in on the Spitfire XIV kit but in the meantime it isn`t very difficult to make one from cross kitting the Airfix PR.19 and the ICM Spit IX/XVI; Merry Crimbo Everybody, Cheers Tony

Nice one George, It reminds me of attacking old models with a heated pin and butter knife on a Sunday afternoon in my youth! To a youngster in the 60`s & 70`s these kits must have been so much fun! Merry Christmas, Tony

1/72 - Armstrong Whitworth Whitley Mk.V & Mk.VII by Airfix - released
tonyot replied to Homebee's topic in The Rumourmonger
Didn`t some Polish airmen serving with 138(SD) Sqn fly the Whitley? The unit did have a Polish Flight but that may have been later after the Halifax had taken over. Great news about this release,........I`ll definitely be buying one! Cheers Tony- 123 replies

Isn`t the bloke in the foreground on the ground equipment box art wearing a modern RAF wooly pully? Great news about the 48th Hurri and Spit,.......especially the Hurri,....pity they didn`t release a metal winged Hurri in 2nd but that would just be greedy wouldn`t it I suppose. Beaufighter and Shack are great news too,.....especially as I guessed right about these two! Cheers Tony

I`m surprised that there has not been a lot more said about this,.......if it was a Hobbyboss kit people would be in uproar! Considering that Airfix pride themselves with accuracy it is a glaring error which really needs to be addressed, Cheers Tony

RAF Gladiator, 112 Squadron, Sudan 1940
tonyot replied to Mitch K's topic in Ready for Inspection - Aircraft
I love the old Gladiator and your model is fantastic, really capturing the look of the real thing and the scheme looks great too, good choice of subject, Cheers Tony -
Blinkin eck Tom, I thought that I`d been busy over the year until I saw your cracking models, well done! I like them all but the 6 Sqn Typhoon, RAF Atlas and RAF Tornadoes really stand out for me, Cheers Tony

Great Stuff Andy, You`ve done a cracking job there mate, nice one and how did you find using Ali`s resin canopy with the bulges moulded in? Also,.. aren`t the canopy masks good in the Revell Mk.II kit? I`m just finishing off my second 48th scale Revell Ventura II along with my fourth GR.V (PV-1) so I know what you mean about mojo,.....mind you I`ve altered the interior of each one and added sun shields to the canopy too so I`ve made it harder for myself. I`ve loads more lined up,....another RNZAF, RAAF and RCAF plus a couple of SAAF ones and an RAF 2 Group Mk.II ,.....there are so many great subjects and schemes. Merry Christmas over there in the `other' county! Cheers Tony

Of course they were DH Hydromatic`s,.....I was going to type DH then remembered the style of hub was the later style, and that DH were licence built Hamilton Standards so typed the latter instead,...doh! Freightdog do a resin prop for this kit which might be worth a look see in case it is the right type. Tony
