  1. thanks Craig I've really enjoyed this GB and I'm looking forward to next years continuation, I'm sure there be enough interest thanks Alex its one of the (many) things I like about this forum is that there are many knowledgeable folks willing to share, an added bonus is dancing penguins thanks James photos added đź‘Ť thanks I've done similar things on far too many occasions rgds John(shortCummins)
  2. I’ve really enjoyed taking part in this group build, I’ll be taking part in future Thanks to James and Enzo for running the group and thanks to everyone who has either commented or “liked” and encouraged my efforts. My build log is available here… until next time as always, any suggestions, criticisms or comments will be gratefully received. rgds John(shortCummins)
  3. Here is my effort at building Tamiya’s 1:48 Me262 A-1a over on the World War 2 Twins Mega GB. Aftermarket: Aires resin Jumo engine Eduard harness Montex vinyl mask Yahu IP Paints used: MRP MrColor Tamiya vallejo Xtreme metals 502 Abteilung oils Here are the photos: My build log is available here… until next time as always, any suggestions, criticisms or comments will be gratefully received. rgds John(shortCummins)
  4. The remaining bits and pieces were then attached to the aircraft. I think for most of us one of the most satisfying parts of the build is removing the cockpit masks? …the resin engine fitted… …pitot and anti collision lights… …a dangly thing, no idea what this is… …the engine cover is just pushed in place, not permanently fixed. I’m calling this one done, next I’ll be taking the RFI photos. until next time as always, any suggestions, criticisms or comments will be gratefully received. rgds John(shortCummins)
  5. After a base of MrSurfacer 1500 black primer the tyres were given a coat or MRP-173 rubber and the tread a dusting of MRP-114 extra dark sea grey… …the hubs were painted with MRP-137 jet black and given a coat of gloss… …I made some “dust” from Ultimate clay wash that had been left to evaporate leaving the clay pigment. Brake wires and connectors were made from stretched WD40 spray applicator, it stays hollow when stretched… …vallejo 70.950 black was used to paint the wire and connectors. The landing gear covers were fixed in place… …when fitting the front landing gear I managed to break the support strut!… …the landing gear fixed, it was tricky to get the support struts for these… …and up on her feet. Next I’ll be adding the remaining bits and pieces. until next time as always, any suggestions, criticisms or comments will be gratefully received. rgds John(shortCummins)
  6. CA has a "shelf life" even when its not been opened so if you've had it a while it could very well have gone off rgds John(shortCummins)
  7. Hi James just a word to the wise, don't leave the decal solution in the brushes and expect it to work as well, I think it oxidises as the pens aren't air tight. rgds John(shortCummins
  8. when I've previously got "milky white blemishes" in matt varnish 99% of the time it was because I didn't shake the varnish enough rgds John(shortCummins)
  9. thanks James the more I use oils the more I like them, I'd previously got a "ÂŁ1 shop" set and wasn't too happy with the results, now that I've got some 502 Abteilung oils their so much easier to get the kind of results I'm after rgds John(shortCummins)
  10. Several 502 Abteilung oils were used to try and convey accumulated dirt and grime, these including: ABT002 sepia ABT006 burnt umber ABT165 faded white ABT510 starship filth ABT525 ghost grey Next I’ll be continuing the undercarriage. until next time as always, any suggestions, criticisms or comments will be gratefully received. rgds John(shortCummins)
  11. thanks Keith not too far off rgds John(shortCummins)
  12. Several 502 Abteilung oils were used to try and convey accumulated dirt and grime, these including: ABT002 sepia ABT006 burnt umber ABT092 ocher ABT510 starship filth Next I’ll be continuing with the weathering on the upper surfaces. until next time as always, any suggestions, criticisms or comments will be gratefully received. rgds John(shortCummins)
  13. The entire airframe was given a coat of the W&N Galeria matt varnish. To start the weathering process I added some (minimal for me!) chipping and scratches with a prismacolor silver pencil. Next I’ll be adding to the weathering with some oil paints. until next time as always, any suggestions, criticisms or comments will be gratefully received. rgds John(shortCummins)
  14. thanks chaps I'm still not happy about using decals however the only other choice was to omit the stencils and walkway lines, I could probably live with the walkway (incidentally this had the most carrier film) but I think the voltage? stencils are needed. I'll see how they behave once the oil weathering goes on rgds John(shortCummins)
  15. she's turned out really nice, I really like the subtle weathering (I always go over the top with mine!) rgds John(shortCummins)
  16. Whilst waiting for the gloss varnish to dry I thought I’d have a look at the landing gear. I’d read somewhere, but can’t find it now!, that the front landing gear cover was made from plywood, so to replicate this I sprayed it with a coat of MRP-259 pale wood and then Usci Van Der Rosten wood decal applied… …after a layer of hairspray a coat of MrColor C117 RLM76 light blue was sprayed… …and after an hour or so chipped to show the plywood. Back to the decals, the main thing that I don’t like about decals is carrier film, you can see here how the light catches its edge… …as I’m going to use oils for weathering, if I leave it “as is” the oils will make it more pronounced, so I used a high grit sanding stick to try and knock it back… …I was a little too enthusiastic with the sanding and burnt though to the primer in a couple of places… …I used both liquid mask (over the decals) and Tamiya tape (for the camo demarcation) and first sprayed the C037 RLM75… …followed by C036 RLM74… …I then used W&N Galeria matt to cover the scratches… As W&N Galeria is an acrylic varnish it shouldn’t be affected by the oil paints. This is the first time I’ve used Galeria and I must say I’m really impressed, the only thing I’ve had to do is to increase the air pressure to approx. 2 bar, I “normally” spray around 1 bar with a 0.2 needle. Next I’ll be continuing with the weathering. until next time as always, any suggestions, criticisms or comments will be gratefully received. rgds John(shortCummins)
  17. absolutely first class rendition of a well worn, well used aircraft I shall be using your build as reference đź‘Ť best rgds John(shortCummins)
  18. that undercarriage would be fantastic at 1/48, at 1/72 its exceptional đź‘Ť rgds John(shortCummins)
  19. There are some decals that can’t(?) be replicated via a mask set because their far too small so, unless HGW do a wet transfer set, you have to use the kit supplied stencils. So the decals were applied with MrMarkSoftner NEO, left for a couple of hours and, on a few, cut panel lines followed by a final hammering with Solvaset. I left them overnight and gave them a protective coat of AK intermediate gauzy agent. Next I’ll be continuing with the weathering. until next time as always, any suggestions, criticisms or comments will be gratefully received. rgds John(shortCummins)
  20. very nice, all black is so difficult to do and you've got her just right! yet another kit I'm tempted to get rgds John(shortCummins)
  21. thanks if I'd been paying more attention to what I was doing I wouldn't need to make as many corrections 🥴 thanks John I find that I make so many errors I've had to get good at fixing them, I hope that it shows you can recover from most mistakes so you shouldn't become too disheartened you should Mike, only problem is that once you start its difficult to go back to "just decals" thanks Pete she does look scratched, I wonder if that was operationally or from the wrecking crew? thanks James if I'd not looked at the Tamiya decals, I needed to for the stencils, I wouldn't have know I'd got them wrong, it just goes to show that the masks allow you to make alterations if/when required. rgds John(shortCummins)
