  1. Thanks @Galligraphics, I sometimes get tempted by larger scales but to date I've stayed faithful to the one true scale! Here's a snap of my new setup - I've actually got a bit less space than I used to have (eventually might migrate to the shed in the garden once it is made a bit more hospitable) so going to have to work hard to keep things neat and tidy, also need to get some newspaper down to protect the desk a bit more. The spray booth is new, looking forward to poisoning myself a little less, and the shelves are a CD case which works well for squirreling things away.
  2. Evening all! It's been a while... Since the end of February myself and the better half have moved into a lovely new house and I've had to take a break from modelling as everything got packed up into boxes, fair to say life has also been a bit hectic! Over the long weekend I managed to get the basics back together, i.e. a table, some lighting, brushes and paints. Fortunately I'd stopped with the Tempest in a good place, with gloss coat on and decals down. There's not too much left to do and last night I got the oil paints going to grub up the underside. On the last few builds I've waited until the flat coat was on before weathering but adding the oils to the gloss coat worked quite well - they streak more easily and it is easier to correct mistakes and tidy up with white spirit. I'm hoping the matt varnish will lock this layer of weathering in and I can then add a few last touches with dry pastel dust. One thing I'm not quite sure on is how to weather the yellow spinner, anyone got any thoughts / reference photos / examples of how you do it? Thanks for dropping by, more to come soon I hope! Sam
  3. Fantastic John! This is a modelling tour de force, the weathering is spot on, as are the detailed interiors. I've got my first Eduard Spit in 1/72 lined up next, complete with resin engine, so expect ill be back here for inspiration regularly!
  4. Thanks @Johnson, didn't think it looked quite right, will update! Are there any other aerial cables to add with stretched sprue? Thanks Kevin!!!🤣
  5. @PeteH1969 @marvinneko thankyou gents! Progress here is gloss coat on and decals starting to be added. Looking good so far, airfix decals in these new kits generally seem to behave and with some decal set and softener are sitting down nicely with the rivets even showing through. Not too much left now, little stencils will be added, a matt coat applied and then some weathering with oils and ground up pastels. Cheers! Sam
  6. Great choice! I've been drooling over this kit and the surface detail for months - if anything will tempt me to be unfaithful to the one true scale it might be this! Hope this kit works its magic and you feel better for the build. Cheers, Sam
  7. Moderately fiddly undercarriage installed this evening. Drying overnight before trying it's new legs but feel fairly solid, here she is inverted ! Just spotted, must remember to remask the lights before varnish goes in...
  8. Afternoon all, painting is very nearly done, just a few final touch ups on the ocean grey and she's there: Once that's done I'll attach the various bits of undercarriage, probes and aerials before giving it a gloss coat in preparation for the decals. Not too much more to do on this one!
  9. This is a great idea, sign me up for one if you get it working! Have you seen Plasmo on Youtube? Makes beautiful models and iirc he made his own riveting tool a few years ago. Another trick will be getting it to punch round holes, rather than little lines - both of the tools I have do this to some extent but they're small enough you get away with it. Final thing, the Rosie riveter used to have a double wheel which unfortunately I didn't pick up, this would make double rows of rivets much easier and better aligned. Cheers!
  10. I think I've got away with it following lots of sanding and some rescribing, though it's one of the less neat bits of the build. I'll get a photo of the underside posted later. Thanks Adrian, means a lot coming from a master like yourself! @PeteH1969 @cpoud117 @Steve Coombs - Yep, I've used Rosie the Riveter tool (the one with the wooden handle that has gone out of production) for the small rivets, I'll check the pitch this evening but think it was 0.5mm. I've also got the Rosemary rivet tool, which looks great but just isn't quite as good. Somehow the original gets the resistance in the wheel just right so it doesn't spin too quickly as you push, but isn't too stiff. The Rosemary seems to loosen as you use it so is a bit more of a faff. I'd like to spend some more time fiddling with this though as I think it could be made to work, I just haven't spent a lot of time with it yet. The main improvement on my technique with this build has been sticking dymo tape onto tamiya tape so it can be reused more easily. This encourages you to get the alignment and spacing just right and the tape doesn't ever really slip accidentally. It still takes an age to do though! Also, I successfully re-rivetted the starboard side, where I initially made a hash of it, by sanding back, with progressively finer grades, and then painting with Mr Surfacer1000 - this provides a fresh, smooth surface which could be rivetted more successfully second time. Cheers! Sam
  11. Evening all! Invasion stripe painting went well and it's starting to look smart! A few very minor touch ups needed, along with yellow leading edges and repaint of exhausts and guns. Enjoy!
  12. Afternoon all, I hope it is going well! Airbrush painting has happened over the last week or so: - First the underside got a shot of Tamiya XF83 Medium Sea Grey with a drop of white added (about 10%) before thinning. - Next, after masking, I laid down XF82 Ocean Grey, again with a touch of white added. I'm using really thin layers and have tried to stop just at the right moment to let the preshade actually do something - usually I going a coat or two too far and by the time I've glossed, matted, weathered, etc, the variation gets lots. - The green is a 75-25 mix of XF-71 Dark Green 2 (which is a bit green on its own to my eye) and XF-49 Khaki. The "negative" mask cutting worked out pretty well and I'm pleased with the joins between the colours which don't need too much touching up. I've painted this way, rather than an all over coat of grey, then green on top, so I don't have too many layers building up obscuring the preshade and filling in the rivets - it's a bit more painstaking but looking ok so far: This morning I got some more masking done and I've just sprayed a coat of matt white for the invasion stripes. There's a bit of preshade showing through which will, I think, look about right once the black is on and top coats added. I was so keen to see what it looked like in this state I made the mistake of de-masking before the black stripes were done... ah well a bit more masking never hurt anyone! So black stripes, sky band near the tail and then yellow leading edges and she'll be painted and ready for varnish and decals - I always love this part of the build where it starts to come alive, more soon hopefully! Cheers, Sam
  13. This is super smart, you've done a great job with the mottling and the whole build lives up to the promise of your fantastically painted pilot. A suggestion if I may, the Eduard 1/72 FW190 is a great little kit, go on treat yourself, you know your want to!
  14. Thanks @Mukund SB and @bigbadbadge, the riveting took ages but strangely satisfying once you get into the swing of it! Not getting much time for modelling at the moment but still nibbling away at this one, here she is masked up ready for a coat of Ocean Grey later today: I've cut the pattern out carefully and kept the "negative" offcuts so hopefully I can use these to mask off for the green, we'll see! The Tempest is an awesome looking aircraft and I can't wait to see it with some colour on!
  15. Your scribing could definitely be worse, trust me! My technique is similar to @Ventsislav Gramatski : I use dymo tape, it's thick and stiff so good for longish lines, not so good for curves. It's also quite sticky and can pull off paint so I stick it onto tamiya tape, this also makes it better for repositioning. Then I scribe gently with a sharp sewing needle, micro saw is also good for this, before building up to the spike on a drawing compass if a more pronounced line needed. I then sand the rough edges and go over everything again. I've got a panel scriber but never really got on with it and honed the above process rescribing an old Revell SR71 a few months ago - fun! For filling (also lots of practice on the blackbird), I use sprue goo which is plastic dissolved in tamiya extra thin, it's basically liquid plastic which sands and polishes just right for filling seams, admittedly doesn't smell great though! Hope this helps a bit, good luck, this is looking great! Sam
  16. That pilot is ace and thanks for the walk through on your technique - looking forward to more on this!
  17. Thanks @Johnson! Got the first mottle coat on this evening. This is how I like to preshade and should help to add some life to the layers of paint coming next. Tbh it didn't go that well - first I couldn't get the paint consistency quite right then I was having trouble with the nozzle spraying a line not a dot so things are less neat than I would like. Once finished I checked the nozzle and a little split has appeared causing the ropey behaviour - time for a new one so I can spray straight and smarten things up with a slightly lighter shade of grey 👍
  18. Evening all, slow progress with this one as the new year kicks in and lots of things going on in real life and at work. I've been steadily working through a list of small jobs like painting and riveting the wheel covers, masking the canopy, tidying up seams and painting and weathering the wheel bays. This afternoon I got the airbrush out gave everything a very light dusting of Tamiya rubber black: This base coat reveals imperfections quite well and fortunately she's looking pretty good - happy with the seams and the riveting shows through nicely. This is the first step in what I think is called "black basing" (for obvious reasons!), Next I'll switch to the fine nozzle on the airbrush and mottle on lighter grey to provide a preshade, then I'll mask off carefully and paint the camouflage pattern and invasion stripes. Thanks for dropping in, more soon I hope!
  19. Great work, she's a beauty! I've really enjoyed this thread and learned lots along the way, thanks!
  20. Little update on the Tempest, I'm very nearly there with the riveting, just a little more to do under the nose and then final touch ups. I also spent a bit of time today sorting out fiddly little details required before any paint gets sprayed. Drilled out gun barrels: and exhaust pipes: And dressed in and polished up wingtip lights (there's a little hole painted green / red inside these but they didn't show up well here): Should get some paint on pretty soon! Cheers, Sam
  21. This is outrageously good Bill, love the rivets, the paint job and especially the electrics! Great job!
  22. I don't find myself over this way very often Bill but glad I spotted this one, the lighting, model and diorama are all top notch! Heading over to the WIP for more now, cheers, Sam
  23. Great to see you've got a new build underway Jonathan. I whizzed through the photos and the cockpit and wheel wells look spot on to me. I'll settle down and read the whole post properly later 👍
  24. @SecretReeve This is awesome! Did you ever get her finished and are there any photos or videos around? I'm thinking of doing something similar for a 1/72 spit and this is providing great inspiration! Cheers, Sam
  25. This is awesome! Great job and really good work on the instinct to go with the tinted pledge, she's going to be an absolute stunner!
