Sky Ship - The Amber Bliss.
TheVoidDragon replied to rockpopandchips's topic in Work In Progress - SF & RealSpace
With the crane if there isn't room at the front, perhaps you could have some sort of replacement for part of the hull itself. Something like a large under-belly mounted winch system built into the bottom back portion of the boat hull, like instead of where the engines would be you could replace part of the hull with a big cargo/storage platform along and the crane/winch, so built into the ship itself. You'd obviously have to move the engines elsewhere but it would leave space on the deck for other things.- 148 replies

The idea of Sky/flying ships is a pretty interesting one, great work so far!- 148 replies

Looking at the wiki it seems you're right, they're a type of Imperial Army trooper rather than a variant of stormtrooper. It's became so convoluted as to what Imperial Stormtroopers are actually classed as in terms of training and all that, Rogue One even had them as generic prison guards, so i'm hoping the canon inclusion of the Imperial Army does somewhat take Stormtroopers back to the level of somewhat elite. What's the AMA you're referring to? Tried to find it but couldn't.

I've yet to see the film, but aren't these Mud/Swamptroopers? I thought they were meant to be just another environment or planet focused variant of Stormtrooper.

I'm a big fan of Stargate and have always very much liked the ship designs featured in the multiple different series, but from what i've seen it looks as if it never really got much attention in terms of merchandise and similar things. I've only found 2 official ship replicas so far, Goa'uld Death Glider and F-302 Fighter collectables released quite a few years ago that seem hard to find now. There's a few fan-made 3D-Printed ships, but other than that the only other thing i can really find is a site that at one point made a Daedalus/Prometheus/F-302/Ancient ship as resign model kits quite a few years back. Does anyone know if there are any of the ships available (model kits, die-cast replicas etc)? With it being one of my favourite sci-fi series i'm curious what there is (or was) available!

Revell Under New Management after Hobbico Bankruptcy

How does this change in ownership give Revell "an even wider range of products"? -
Revell Under New Management after Hobbico Bankruptcy
TheVoidDragon replied to jargonking's topic in The Rumourmonger
Their site says that's what they do but even if it was the latter i doubt they''d actually say "We like to buy companies just to strip out the useful assets and go for immediate profit". Their site is obviously going to word things in a positive way to make them look good, even if what they do is bad. I'm not saying that's the case or it's what they'd do, just i couldn't really find any definite information about how things went for companies they've bought before. It was only a brief look and maybe i just searched for the wrong thing, though. -

What is their reputation, though? Doing a quick search for them i can't find any definite information one way or the other, all i can really see is some of the actual company information rather about what the sort of stuff they've done before. -
Revell Solo: a star wars story kits
TheVoidDragon replied to gavingav1's topic in Science Fiction Discussion
While i really doubt they paid anywhere near the same amount of money as for Star Wars, i also find it strange that they've licensed the Halo IP and so far have only made 2 "build-and-play" kits from that as well. They seem to really only be using them for the toy-like stuff even though there's so much, much more potential with those IPs. -

I don't know too much about business things so can someone explain how these new owners are supposedly a good thing? From what I've read here, while it's obviously great that Revell will still exist, i don't see how a company that seemingly has no real interest in the actual thing they've bought could be good. -

TheVoidDragon replied to gavingav1's topic in Science Fiction Discussion
I think that describes the problem quite well, actually! It's so close to still being the Millenium Falcon but the extra length and covered front section make it just so slightly different enough for it to feel wrong. I really wish they'd have gone for something more substantial. While this is a side-view and now non-canon, something like these Cargo pods could have been interesting: If they had done something like that alongside the current front addition and linked the two together (so like there's a whole other layer ontop), that would have been a pretty interesting design and still the Falcon underneath, but enough of a difference to feel worthwhile. -
So i recently decided to just get some Vallejo black primer to try that anyway, and so far it definitely seems to be better than Citadel Imperial Primer, at least! I'm not quite sure if i'm using it right though. How many coats is it meant to require, and what should the initial consistency be with it? Should i should be able to see some of the plastic through it still, or should it be a coat that makes it all fully black? Watching this video here he puts it on thick enough so you can't see the plastic underneath as he puts it on (so just one coat), is that how it's supposed to be? I

Revell Solo: a star wars story kits
TheVoidDragon replied to gavingav1's topic in Science Fiction Discussion
I really hope not, the movie doesn't need to be a "here's everything Han mentioned in the movies, no matter how brief!" compilation, especially as it's meant to be set quite a few years before A New Hope! I can see what you mean with the Falcon now actually. It's something that, at least in principle i don't have a problem with; the Falcon is in poor condition and had so many changes by Han by the time we see it in the OT...but the more i look at it, the less i like it. It's like it's so close and those changes are so small that it just looks entirely wrong. It isn't just because of it being different, i think it's that it's not different enough; it's just a slightly longer, shinier Falcon, the small change of the elongated Front makes it seem too similar yet also not quite right, rather than if they'd done something that was very noticeably different with it. -
Revell Solo: a star wars story kits
TheVoidDragon replied to gavingav1's topic in Science Fiction Discussion
All the designs i've seen so far look awful. A Star Destroyer design that intended for what is now basically a different setting (as it was an entire different interpretation of how things might look) that was rejected in the first place, and looks really silly with the giant dishes on the sides. An Imperial Speederbike that's closer to a flying brick than anything, that seems to have no thought put into the design and doesn't even slightly fit in with any of the speederbike designs we've seen, especially not the Imperial ones. It's similar to Rey's, but that speederbike is something she made herself on a junk planet...but even that looks more sleek, aerodynamic and interesting than this one. Han's speeder can be compared to a giant portable hard-drive the with tiny engines on the side and some car parts slapped on. For some reason it's also not symmetrical. Why do you think they've ruined the Falcon though? -
Revell Solo: a star wars story kits
TheVoidDragon replied to gavingav1's topic in Science Fiction Discussion
I didn't realize Han's speeder wasn't symmetrical, i don't like the design in the first place but i think that makes it even worse! While i dislike pretty much all the new vehicle designs, it's such a shame that all their recent kits for Star Wars are these "build & play" things that are more along the lines of toys. Its good that there are alternatives for Star Wars model manufacturers though, even if Bandai kits are kinda hard to get. At least it isn't quite like what they're doing with Halo where it's all "build & play* but there aren't any other alternative manufactures using that IP for model kits (that i know of). -
Solo: A Star Wars Story - Teaser Trailer
TheVoidDragon replied to Madmonk's topic in Science Fiction Discussion
The Falcon doesn't look too bad with those changes, but i think every other vehicle/ship design i've seen for the new movie looks absolutely terrible so far. It either looks like it doesn't belong in Star Wars or fit in with the previous designs (The new Imperial Cruiser), it's just uninspired (Han's speeder, an extra wide TIE fighter) or both (The Imperial Speederbike). It even extends to the non-vehicles, like the range trooper is a wierd combination of things and Han doesn't look like Han. -
Revell Under New Management after Hobbico Bankruptcy
TheVoidDragon replied to jargonking's topic in The Rumourmonger
Does Hobbico taking over RoG a few years ago have anything to do with what seems to be them primarily using the licenses (Star Wars, Halo etc) they get to create things closer to toys rather than model kits now? I know many years ago (here in the UK at least) there were Star Wars Easy-kits, but they weren't on the same level as toys. Using unique settings for mostly "build & play" stuff ith flashing lights and sounds and all that seems like a huge waste of potential to me, but i'm not sure if there's an actual explanation for it. -
Revell Under New Management after Hobbico Bankruptcy
TheVoidDragon replied to jargonking's topic in The Rumourmonger
This is the first time I've heard about Hobbico and their buyout of Revell, so I'm not sure what impact that had on the model kit side of things. What is it that they've done/not done that's been a bad thing? -
Thanks, those definitely help. Not looking for entirely accurate as it seems that would require mixing and i'm not entirely confident enough for that yet, so just something vaguely in the right sort of area is fine with me! Supposedly Mission Models does very close matches of the paints so i suppose it's easiest to just find something similar to theirs! From what i can tell, it looks as if Revell "Africa Brown No. 17" is the closest to RAL 8020 (very similar to the Mission Models version) but for some reason Revell suggest it for a early war 1941 scheme, not sure if that's just they don't have anything closer to RAL 8000 or there's some other reason. I thought their "Sandy Yellow No. 16"might be similar to RAL 8000 at first but that seems to be what they suggest as DunkelGelb. Thanks, i suppose it'll just be easiest to get some sort of green Khaki for the uniform and go for that then!

A while back i bought the Tamiya 1/35 Panzer II Ausf. F/G as my first Tamiya kit, my original intention was to go for the a Panzer Grey colour but it seems the infantry are meant to be Afrika Korps. I've been unable to find any specific colour guides for what paints are needed for both the tank and the infantry, the instructions are pretty vague and i've not been able to find any posts here or elsewhere with what paints have been used listed. Can anyone tell me what paints would be needed for an Afrika Korps scheme for both the infantry and tank itself included in this kit? Preferably Tamiya or Revell paints as they're what i can get hold of easiest.

Been after some brush-on primer myself because of the weather and it just being more convenient usually, i had some Citadel Imperial Primer before but it ended up being extremely thin, bubbly and would just pool together and even multiple coats didn't help. I've had a look at the Vallejo Black primer but i can't find too much about it, how many coats does it typically need? Would it also do the same job as using a black spray so both priming it and undercoating (the shading) at the same time, or would i also then have to paint black over that as well?
-
I'm having some difficulty with figuring out what to do regarding Priming stuff. It's more convenient and easier for me to brush-paint, but pretty much everywhere i've read says brush-based primers are a bad idea and to just go for spray. Spray is obviously easier to actually prime and I will just use that when i have a completely assembled model, but when it's something that isn't complete yet it's a bit more difficult. With the weather and other factors like that, being able to just go to my desk and paint it as needed with a brush is more convenient for me, especially when it comes to things like cockpits and interiors that aren't going to be reachable too well after the rest is complete. Spraying individual parts doesn't seem really suitable but as i've read not to bother with brush primers i don't know what to do about parts like that. I've had some Citadel Imperial Primer and that just doesn't work in the slightest no matter what, and that's a common complaint with it (it ends up being extremely thin and bubbly no matter what, meaning it doesn't apply properly) but i don't know what somehing like Vallejo's brush primers are like. Can anyone help? Are brush really best avoided or are is that more a case of people just preferring using spray primers?

AMT B1 Battledroid - Mister Bones
TheVoidDragon replied to rockpopandchips's topic in Work In Progress - SF & RealSpace
I think with the second one there's still a bit too much of a futuristic feel to it, mostly because of the grip having all that detail It need a bit more to make it look sort of lower tech. If you look at something like this chart most of them are either bulky, unwieldy and somewhat busy with the random bits stuck on, or a sleek, simple, somewhat retro design.- 98 replies

Bandai 48th scale AT-ST (alt camo scheme)
TheVoidDragon replied to Gekko_1's topic in Work In Progress - SF & RealSpace
This is awesome, certainly one of the more unique AT-ST models i've seen. The paint scheme alone would have been quite impressive, but all the modifications make it far better!
