  1. Superb! How was the model to build?
  2. 4 hours of decals, or maybe 3...I lost count. They are very thin and some of the stencils were very delicate, especially the wing warning lines. They just fell apart and I spent a long time putting the puzzle back together. Anyway, it worked out in the end and I think they look pretty good. And rockets...They'll get some cleaning up and some more colour. Tomorrow I'll apply the satin varnish and then, when dry, some weathering with Florywash. I'll attach the hard points, the canopy sections, the two mooring hooks on the underside, the drop tank, tail wheel, etc...Getting there! --John
  3. Thanks CC...I agree about the weathering. On a naval ship at sea, I figured they were kept freshly painted to avoid rust and wipe down to keep the rime from building up. Thanks too, about the RATOG. I feel ok with not using it. Now I want more FAA prop stuff from the late 40s and 50s...
  4. Bleeding staunched... Much tidier. Not perfect, mind you. These are my first invasion stripes. I promise to do better next time! --John
  5. Time to break out the hairy brush...damn. I have seen worse and have recovered from more complex and difficult circumstances. For once, though, I would like it to come out without incident. It'll be ok after some touching up. And once that is dry and the decals on, I can weather it a bit. You won't notice anything. --John
  6. Thank you Steve. You'll see tomorrow, however, that there was fair amount of bleeding when I added the black. It'll be job cleaning it up.
  7. Elegance in 1/48th...wonderful job!
  8. Looking very much like a patient in A&E... And now out of the operating theatre! Some prop action...I think I have the blades going the correct direction... Wheels and landing gear... I'll get the black stripes on tonight; finish up the propeller assembly; get the flare system all set to attach...I think I'll do all the decals and weathering before I attach any of the rockets or drop tank or flares. Those are flares, aren't they? Those vacuum looking things hanging off of the fuselage on top of the wings? I'll add the rocket hard points last as well so I don't snap them off during the griming process. This kit calls for FloryWash for sure! So I have a fair amount of work to do but the majority of the assembly is finished. --John
  9. As you see, my instructions skip a few steps--7,8,9,10...13, 14... pretty much everything underneath! I was able to find the instructions on line and take some screen shots. I'm ok now.
  10. The Duck Egg applied...also on the drop tank and the undercarriage flaps. One drawback to this kit from my standpoint is the instructions. Nowhere does it mark out where one is supposed to attach the hard points, drop tank, bombs, rockets, etc...and I am pretty sure that this is what some of the photo etch is for...the wires that go to the rockets. I'll have to search for this unless someone has a diagram? --John
  11. Masked up, ready for paint! Tail section with the registration mask, then white over that. Much of the aircraft masked, ready for the Duck Egg Green... And off we go...! --John
  12. Sorry in advance for the poor quality fo the photo...The light is lovely here today, but not for this... A bit of paint...since I will be building the stripéd aircraft, I decided to get some white on the wings first. Also, the bit of the tail section where the stripes go have that cut-out for the 'Royal Navy VP 480' decal and the backing for that is the DEGreen. So a splash of that on each side as well. I can lay down the mask for that decal later and figure out the stripes on that tail piece too. I have measured the area on the wings for the stripes and each one should be 4.4mm. Once again, sorry for the photo. It does look better than this. One other note....after perusing photos and other builds I have decoded to not use any chipping, etc...I have seen no evidence of this kind of wear and tear. Grime, rime, smoke and soot...yes. No chipped paint. It is, after all, a naval aircraft and chipped paint just won't do at sea! --John
  13. Yes CC..Vallejo Air "Sky Type-S"...I agree. It is weird. Maybe it looks different dry? I'll stick with the Duck Egg. Thanks to both of you for the guidance!
  14. Masked and re-primed...I think I'm ready for some paint! First I will add some dark aluminum areas around panels, etc...I have decided to use the salt method for weathering and chipping. But that is not something I'll do today...or I might. I don't know... My dilemma is the paint colour. Again. Here are my two options. On the left is Sky Type-S. On the Right, Duck Egg Green. If you'll remember, I used the Green for the Fairey Gannet (from the same Royal Navy era) I built a while back and it looked good. From my perspective, the Sky Type-S looks too brown. What do you think? Here is a reminder of the Gannet with just the colours...Duck Egg and Grey-Blue. I have a Dark Sea Grey I'll be using with the Seafire that is much darker. And here are the two choices I have... --John
  15. I've never used nails. Will that make my builds better? I am looking forward to this Avro. Looks like a real winner.
