1/72 Academy Tempest F.6 conversion
Modelraynz replied to Modelraynz's topic in Work in Progress - Aircraft
is an idea...i havent seen a matchbox kit in the flesh, but i wonder if it would have a thicker wing? hahaha cheers sure enough, a few days ago, this happned: 1/72 - Hawker Tempest Mk.V/VI & Mk.II by Kovozávody Prostějov (KP) - box art - release in 2021 Anyhoo....ive been looking at how i will modify the radiator - i found some mesh, but im not sure if it is too coarse to be used in 1/72 scale, thoguhts? meanwhile, back to working on the cockpit -
Hi everyone! after a dismal 2020 for building i thought id start the year by cutting into stryene! Id wanted to attempt this conversion for awhile, and while its not perfect ( i had to make some concessions)...so far seems to be cooperating! I started with cutting out some holes for the radiators in the wings - i realise the enlarged area should continue to the fuselauge, but decided to leave the wing joining edges intact for ease of wing/fuselauge alignment I filled this with some stryene blocks: Then sanded to the general shape. I created the front pieces from a half-pipe of sprue filled down: the result looks a little wonkey on the left due to camera, but seems that it will work Knowing my luck Airfix will release a F.6 without warning!

Great news!! hope they include rwr blisters and chaff/flare dispenser upgrade -
Its the little gift at the end of each transaction eh! The old "were holding your item and need to pay a fee" scammers will also pop up something fierce when this goes live

Yea thats a totally valid point - they could offer the choice of "dont grift the VAT ill risk it" but thats probably my liberterian side coming out Certainly for a far larger country like the UK it entails more risk for a business than our pacific outcropping of 5million lol Retail associations here hoped it would return people to buying local but that hassnt happened... mainly due to lack of variety of stock: modeling wise every shop here pretty much has the same stock at the same price as dictated by the same couple of wholesalers! $1-2 vat dossnt deter when you have all those kit already!! What we really need is a postal version of a VPN LOL!

Lol well put, businesses should remember this is pretty much un-enforceable...any clogging of the system gets very costly for the host country, very quickly. Unofficially from a colleague involved in the process: I've heard it got so expensive and time consuming to try and enforce it, now its just "standout" items that get quieried ie: "big box with yamaha on it" regular mail items and their tiny gst amounts to collect (which our hobby falls into), just dossnt offset the $19+ per hr min wage for the worker or the space to hold it!!

1/72 Hobby 2000 (Fujimi Repop) Skyhawk A/OA-4M
Modelraynz replied to Uncle Dick's topic in The Rumourmonger
Great choice For a kahu upgraded A-4k, as mentioned: - Squared off tail - break chute fairing followed by: - 2x AN/ALR 66 RWR on the sides of the tailpipe - 2x VOR/ILS antennas on each side of the fin - TACAN antenna and formation light above the exhaust on the tail - 2xAN/ALE 39 chaff/flare buckets roughly each side of the tail hook fairing - 2x AN/ALR 66 under the end of the wing leading edges -lower wing anti-collision light normally on the left undercarriage fairing moves to the right - add a marker beacon antenna under the right hand wing tip. -lower rotating beacon (normally on the lower left undercarrige fairing) fitted to the lower right undercarrige fairing -AN/ARC-182 V/UHF behind canopy - strobe added forward of the upper anti-collision light - radar cooling scoop on left hand side of fuselauge by the wing - slime lights - glass cockpit - HOTAS Probably forgot something lol! Dont be daunted - in 72nd most can be fashioned from sprue or spares, (or even irnored) the cockpits probably the hardest part, but with the big eff-off ferranti HUD dominating the pit even with the canopy open its hard to see detail! -

NZ single seaters had the E/F canopy - You could use the original italeri/testors E for an early A-4K (preferably though a fujimi) Though the italeri topgun f-14/a-4e combo is the esci kit too. Some minor changes are needed to the stock kit depending on what era you go for - though theres plenty of articles on the net to walk you through Cheers! -
Damn...now ive seen that wing double curve i can't unsee it!!

Cheers steve, Spent the day filling ,sanding, priming and scribing...but i think its ready for the exhausts (which ill add later) with a demo piece in place: Looks a lil scruffy ...just like the real thing lol

hey mate, it might just have been a bad run! so...short story that attemt diddnt work out so well .....but being stubborn, started again with an older version of the kit in stash! Id built the cockput when my order of Evergreen had arrived - I was happy with the ribbing, but i think the '100' strips will be a game-changer fo scratchbuilding cockipts! (making this effort look very clunky!) ohwell, cockpits tiny and wont be seen much It came to me how to do the exhausts in a MUCH simpler manner! first fill in the gap for the earlier exhausts: then using '210' pipe i can simply add on the exhausts - this is an example i jsut cut up and positioned in just 1 min! with proper shaping under a magnifier etc, the exhausts will be no problem talk about live-and-learn! LOL I do have the different radiator of the type III from the SH kit though! so adding in the engine i added a spacer ring to help align centrally inside the fuselauge: Obligatary cockpit shot: Long weekend here so hoping to make a lot of progress

Well the special hobby kit was...schite! Wing was messy, the cowl sides wouldent align with a 2 mm gap at the bottom!!..soft misaligned detail...really hope the spit 22 in the stash is better! (So much for it solving all my problems!) So went with plan b: sawed off the nose on the hasegawa kit, cut out the new exhaust panels?, backed with plasticard and begun adding the new exhausts from evergreen! Also had to add a spacer to the main fuselsuge to offset the shortening of the length due to cutting! So much for an ams build lol! I got a little carried away and did a 2-3-1 pattern for the exhausts (late variant) but neglected widening the cowl intake...i can live with out widening it i think!! Anyhoo, this is how it looks currently - if you compare to the pic at the top these exhausts look far longer - what i might do is mask off the appropiate length then fill the rest with putty!
-
So started looking at the kit today and ran into an issue - this is an earlier special hobby kit, therefore a bit more...."special" but this wing warping will be a test!! My plan b if reshaping with hot water doesn't work out; will be to graft the type iii nose onto the 2 body and use other parts where appropriate .... hoping it doesn't come to that though!

Look what arrived today

Hiya John! great choice! hehe its a cool mix of old Japanese unit markings and hastily painted/faded out French roundels im still waiting for my kit to come across the pond from Aussie I look forward to following your build! while waiting for my kit the thoughts been on my mind! been reading a couple of books about British immediate post-war policing in SEA - it is really interesting! ( really want to get a copy of Dunns "The First Vietnam War")

@Rolls-Royce When learning to code in SAS i asked what 'cards' referred to.. a stack appeared on my desk one day to which i replied "so you used to be blind?"

What Shorty84 said! Understandible though - Visited Omaka recently saw one of the yak-3m's with the reaction: "WTF is that unholy spawn?!" - Then read the placard
