  1. HA! You're killin me! yes YOU ARE! Your instructional video on making NAV lights was very helpful to me. Thank you, too, for the kind words about my 747-400. That was a HARD kit...lots of issues with that one, as you well know. And yes, it was the Revell kit. I am with you...preferring the older classic airplanes too.
  2. Thank you, Julien! Really appreciate the kind words. The Minicraft 727 is a pretty good rendition, but does have some glaring issues. The entire kit fits together very well as the MC kits usually do, but the shaping of the nose, the nose cap, the thickness of the wings, panel lines that are way too deep, and completely wrongly molded main landing gear and gear doors...all add up to "be prepared to do some extra work." But patience, perseverance, and study reward pretty well. Paul
  3. Hi Dave... I LOVE when old threads come back up for revival...especially when they are as lovely as yours are! I missed the original because I wasn't even a glimmer on the horizon in this forum in 2016. Sure am glad this has come back around...what a GREAT build. I must confess that I am not a huge fan of the Russian airliners, but YOU are changing my mind pretty quickly with your beautiful builds. This one is classic. Sorry about your "flagging morale." You know as well or better than any of us that those little seasons come and go. I'm in one now myself. After building the two 727s together I am taking a hiatus for a while to regroup my head. It's good for the head as well as the soul...and also when there's yard work to do come spring time.
  4. Hi Andy... Well, that went well...hopefully better than you expected. Sure looks like it went well. Nice job on a great "practice" build. It's inspiring to read and see someone's project that "if it doesn't go well" no harm done. We ALL should practice more on projects like that. Thank you for sharing, and for the inspiration. Nice build, indeed! Paul
  5. Nice build, Dave...as usual. Love this little gem. And the Brussels livery lends her some extra beauty. Really like this one. Can't think of any constructive criticism...but I do have one wish, as I am sure you do as well...for some sunlight to make your photos brighter and show greater detail. Great work! Paul
  6. I will most assuredly include “faff” in my everyday conversation....brilliant. Thank you. Oh absolutely...split scimitar winglets for sure! Just don’t know when I’ll get it built. Since finishing the 727s, I’m taking a little break...studying and thinking of what’s next....
  7. I would fancy some knowledge as to what a “faff” might be......? Planning to build mine as a BBJ...improvised paint scheme and details. I see the Boeing Business Jet very often in the places I fly...they “fancy” from the beautiful to the outrageous. Mine will be quite conservative, probably in black and silver with some red trim. Enjoying my new language lessons!
  8. Hi Neil.... Really? How does one "fancy a quick build?" I simply cannot imagine....but your'"fancy" has led to another fine build. Looks great! I have one of these kits, as well as several other Zvezda kits in my stash, but have yet to build ANY of them. Looking forward to my first experience with a Zvezda kit...you echo most sentiments about them. Inspiring my "fancy" to get busy!! Nice job! Paul
  9. Thank you, Eric! Lots of research went into these build to make them as 'spot on" as I could get them. One fact I didn't mention about the -200...the airplane itself is a prated out hull in Smyrna, Tennessee, which is about a 3 hour drive north of where I live. I spend an afternoon wondering around it, photographing and poking around, opening doors, and being up close and personal with it. Sad to see it rotting away in the open air, with no engines, no tail...no interior...just a hull and wings...but the paint job is still visible but faded, and the tires are all flat...she was once a beauty, faithful in her years of service. Cheers! Paul
  10. Thank you, Mike. I've been fascinated with the Cooper hijacking; interesting that he was never found. But I am way more interested in the beauty of the classic airliner he "took for a ride" one dark rainy night! Cheers! Paul
  11. Oh yeah...she's beautiful, Einar! And I agree completely...that the older classic airliners were just, well, classic. So much personality and character, and you've captured those qualities and more in your build here. Nice work, indeed.
  12. Hi Alan.... thank you for your kind words. I think hard work, perseverance, patience, and the right lighting (natural) make all the difference. I’m very pleased with the turn out on the two 727s...it was a fun project for sure, but not without some pretty unique and unplanned challenges along the way. And you’re right...completely puzzling hijacking. Not sure if Cooper was genius, or just a common crook that seem to evade beyond belief.
  13. Thank you for this...I had forgotten completely that Hasegawa had done the 1/200 scale version of the DC-10-40. I have one in my stash! Appreciate the correction. 1/200 scale suits me just fine...I just prefer 1/144. Wishing that someone would do 1/144 for those of us with fat fingers and failing eyes! Paul
  14. Hi Neil.... Well...given your "on the fence" about liking the A350, I would suppose that your work on THIS model shoves you over! to the "like" side, of course. Your work here just affirms that beauty of the airplane for me. Nice, nice work! And I agree, the AF livery makes her look quite smart! Using the Humbrol ClearFix? Love that stuff. but it does have a learning curve...looks like you found it! Thanks for sharing...great work indeed...as usual!
  15. Hi Alistair; What a wonderful gesture! And you've done a cracking job on a beautiful Airbus to make it! Your friend is going to be pleasantly surprised. Nice work, indeed. Paul
  16. Thank you so much, Dave. Always....always appreciate your kind words, critiques, and observations. I, too, have a soft spot for the older Northwest liveries...they just lended such a classic look to these beauties. I just wish someone made a DC-10-40, with the rounded #2 tail engine, so we could have a representative of those old NW Orient beauties!
  17. Hi Berko; Thanks so much! I am most attracted to the historical/classic airliners...they seem to display much more personality than the "white whales" we see at civilian airports today. The metallic finish is a labor of patience, for sure!
  18. Thank you, Alex! Coming from you...such a prolific builder with such a great eye for detail...that means EVERYthing. Thank you. A little secret...I was so unsatisfied with the finish on the -100, that I stripped it and started over...just the Alclad part...it was rough. Took a while, but finally got it the way I wanted it. The Minicraft 727 is actually a pretty good kit, in spite of a few flaws that need correcting. Engine inlets are too thick, wing leading edges are way too thick, and the main landing gear are just plain wrong...sufferingly so. Since I didn't have a second set of SAC metal gear in my stash, I used the plastic struts from the Airfix kit and re shaped them, cut holes under the wings, elongated the gear wells, and scratch built gear doors. Turned out much better than if I had used the original kit gear. Really appreciate you kind words. Paul
  19. Hi John.... Thank you for the kind words! When I'm told that mine are exceptional, it means alot to me. Takes a lot of patience and study to get the noses right on the Airfix -100... Miliput to the rescue! With lots and lots of sculpting and sanding. Paul
  20. Thank you Sini...YOU are THE master. Learned so much watching your videos...and THANK YOU for the NAV light tutorial. Did you notice that I made these NAV lights on the 727s, per your instructional video?!?!? Yep...turned out quite nicely I think. I have a bowling shoe 747-400 that I built some years ago...it also turned out quite nicely! Very beautiful livery for the 747s. Paul
  21. Hi Eric! Thank you! the -100 is the old Airfix kit; the -200 is the Minicraft kit. Both kits have their own unique challenges, which make for a good journey researching and studying photos for a good finish, then tons of patience modifying and reshaping to make accurate.
  22. Hahaha! Not out to win anything...just to show a pair of beauties in a really classic livery! Thank you for the kind sentiment!
  23. Thanks so much! The Minicraft DC-8 is a very good kit, which makes it relatively easy to finish it well. And the Delta widget livery is my favorite on this particular airplane. Really appreciate your kind words.
  24. Hi David! I am so glad you "likee!" The 727 is one of my favorite airliners, as she was among the crews who flew and still fly them. I knew when I began this project that I wanted to do these two liveries in particular, because I think they are the most attractive ones that Northwest ever dressed their airplanes with.
  25. Thank you so much for your kind words! Yes, I used Miliput around the noses, especially on the Airfix -100. Lots and lots of shaping, then curing, then wet sanding to get it as correct as I could. Thank you for noticing! And you are so right...the 727 was and still is very popular among the crews who flew/fly them...all have pleasant memories and engaging stories to tell.
