  1. I DO NOT keep up anymore! What follows it? And what of the Tornado? The F-14 is outsies, too, in case some of you have only recently come out of the hinterlands as I have. WARNING: RANT AHEAD Guess what replaces the venerable TomCat? Some sort of F-18 compromised hybrid crap-slinger, that's what. They're calling it the Super Hornet or some such silliness. AS IF. Say what you want about CWIS, tactical need structures, "integrated defense networks,' and all the other budget cutting hoo-haw being trundled out again in this current phase of wheedling defense reductions. We soon forget the old lessons, don't we? Remember how badly we Yanks missed cannons in jet fighters - once they were gone? Oh, we patted ourselves on the back when we placed our all eggs in the missile basket. But, we fairly tripped over our own asses putting guns back in our planes - and learning how to shoot them again, when that mistake was revealed in combat over Vietnam. If you want to save money, send illegal latinos back home and quit printing everything double, in Spanish. I've been at sea, aboard the USS John F. Kennedy, CV-67. "Big John," is sadly retired now, too. But when I was in the NAVAIR, it was very comforting to know those big, expensive TomCats were overhead on CAP. Along with the E2-C's, with their 500 mile sweeps, all was well. Sleep tight, my boys - the 'Cats are on the prowl. Now we have a 'cross-functionally multitasked, seamless, air group,' supposedly able to protect itself, drop bombs on the badguys' heads AND even share parts and maintenance. Sounds good, right? To quote a well known character from English literature, "BAH! Humbug!" What I'm hearing is that we're committing to a compromise aircraft, with the range of a buzzfly and NO decent long range AAR missile system. In this case, it's got a gun, but now it'll wait for it's targets to come close. Read that as, "close to the carrier and battle group - otherwise known as home afloat!" Last I checked, the Russians, the French and the Chinese were still happily running their usual arms market, selling their excellent products to anyone with the cash. Nothing has changed... we never seem to learn. END OF RANT. You may now safely return to the normally scheduled discussion...
  2. I dont know if this is the UK EBAY you are talking about, but I can tell you its over here, too. Sometimes these politicians really tick me off. Ive contacted more than a few of them to let them know that: A. A Monogram F-101 is not RARE. That is the MOST misued word going. B. No Monogram P-39 without box should ship ANYWHERE in the US for $15.95 C Ebay is for auctions. If you want to find fools with more money than sense, take an advert in the NY Times. They always get very defensive when I expose them and so far none of them have reported me. The slackers. I used to do a lot of selling on ebay, including models, and I know what I'm about. People use eBay in hopes of finding deals - I always try to give them that by offering something worth buying and letting the bidders work the price. In turn, I never had to relist, since I sold whatever I put up at fair price. I can't stand by and watch all the petty huckstering that has crept in these days without speaking out. One day I'll get bounced, I suppose.
  3. What in blazes is a 'Tonka?' And from the 'For What It's Worth," file, my mother did a family tree once and said I was related to some Viking brigand. A lusty nordic prince of some kind, who pillaged the raw and windy Anglo coasts. Many an abbot and fragile wench met his rigid sword(s), I'm told. Guess we all have to be related to SOMEONE...
  4. I opened my big pie hole again and got myself into another GB, this time on winter camo schemes. I saw a pic of a Jaguar in a dappled winter camo, once, somewhere over the mountains and thought it was great. The pic was in a small book called "Modern Militray Aircraft," or something like that. Well, I said so and now guess what I'm logged as building? Sooooo, what is a good kit of the Jaguar, for starters. I prefer 1/48 and unless I miss my guess, the Airfix/Heller box is the only one of those. HArd to find around these parts. I could do this in 1/72, as I want a pretty quick OOB. Me, I like anything Italeri, myself. Is theirs a good one in this scale? Secondly, what about that camo scheme. Anyone ever seen it? I found one reference so far that looks like it, from the 1/72 Italeri kit, #067. Supposedly, it's printed on the back of the box: While not a great pic, it gives the highlights. Jaguar GR.1, 4Xth Sq. Coltishall, 19XX. Something about being a temporary white finish, maybe in Norway? And it calls out the squadron, although it's gonna take a little CSI enhancement to read it! Marg Helgenberger, where are you when I need you?! Also, I could just do the normal 'swatch' winter camo more often seen. Can anyone shed some light on this scheme and a good kit for it?
  5. I blew it! This was on a modern a/c, the SEPECAT Jaguar to see the post go here: http://www.britmodeler.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=6840
  6. See this is nice. Aeroclub set and Academy kit - that works. What I want to know is doesnt Academy usually do better. Dont they know you can actually visit England and see REAL hunters?
  7. So far thats what I know. But it should be enough.
  8. WOW! I bow in your general direction, all of you. I would not have guessed so much was going on the Spit office. I would have just slapped some sage paint in there and glued 'er up! Thanks!
  9. man-vegetables or not, I'm impressed that you are still able to use so many multisyllabic words after all the wine. Surely the Zen has kicked in...released by the wine, at last.
  10. Could you use thin clear plastic, like the type from sort packaging, or even clear sheet? Make a duplicate from this clear cello, use some lead tape or BMF for the framing and voila! A scale thickness panel that doesn't look wrong.
  11. This is definitely a sweeeeet thread. I'm snagging all the pics, if that's alright. The paint on the cockpit details makes a monstrous difference! I had the HC MS 406 some years ago and like a dolt, I sold it off on eBay. Slap me for an idiot. As I recall it was a good start and could be fabbed up without too much effort into to something nice. I think I gave less than $10 USD for it and with all the AM resin now available - well, someone slap me for a fool. I'll wait......... That is one nice piece of work shaping up there. Oh, BTW, someone said 'poo-poo' back up-thread. Say that in a Yank forum and you get boxed for it. I think I'll like it here, if I may say so.
  12. Thanks Terry. There is debate admitted as to the loss of the aircraft. Maybe it was flak, maybe an 'anschuss' for the Jerries (is it okay to refer to WII Germans as Jerries?) The record allows for either possibility. More important is that PlOff John Satterehwaite Barrow was lost, KIA, along with old GA * ?. This build is for his memory, so that he not be lost, too. Pardon me, for being 'cheeky', but I have to ask - do you know of any web-based pics of this particular aircraft?
  13. Well, then, how about another famed 112 Sq. bird, old GA * ?. According to 112th records it was: Mk IA Kittyhawk Serial ET790 "Lost 22/7/42, A/C shot down by flak over battle area...or, Also claimed by Hans-Arnold "Fiffi" Stahlschmidt, Oberleutnant, W El Alamein . 0845 hours, 2./JG 27. Plt Off John Satterehwaite Barrow, 118054, RAFVR, KIA..." Is this info correct? Where, oh where, can I get some not-grainy foto's of the old "Mystery Bird?" Much hangs in the balance...
