  1. I'm also having all sorts of dramas with the AK 3rd gen. I got the Auscam set for some WIFs and found I couldn't get it to go through my AB with any sort of reliability with any sort of thinners. As mentioned above, there's no sweet spot, and nothing really thins it that well. Water, MLT, X-20A, these all gunk it up in the AB. AK thinner works *ok*, but the 3rd Gen Thinner works a bit better. My best results have been using *lots* of Vallejo AB Flow Improver with a bit of 3rd gen Thinner. Oddly enough, once I get towards the bottom of the cup, it starts to spray nicely but can flood just as easily. I've taken to drying the paint with a hairdryer. I've noticed here and in the videos people are really giving this stuff a hard stir, maybe I need to do that. If anything, the best way to use these is on a wet pallet and handbrush. They really are brilliant for that. But, overall, I'm not a fan. I've used lots of other things in my AB, but as far as cleanup and ease of use I think I'll start sticking with Vallejo Model Air. Airbrushed: Handbrushed:
  2. I used AS-12 silver my 1/72 P-51 and B-17G builds.
  3. Gudday all, here's my finished Snowspeeder... Pretty happy with how it turned out. Not sure why Bandai have made the bases able to be clipped together as the vehicles all have some overhang that makes it impractical. Anyway, hope you all like it, Willy.
  4. Gudday all. Here's my progress log of the Bandai 1/48 Snowspeeder. Not as complex as the Y-wing or quite as tight in it's build but still an excellent kit. Practically snap together in that it's so tightly tooled and pieces can only fit one way. Done with acrylics, brushes, and pencil on a q-tip for some panel lines and weathering. Thanks, Willy.
  5. No real commentary here, just posting some progress pics of my Bandai 1/72 Y-Wing. Dry fitting this thing is generally a pretty bad idea - everything is keyed to go one way and barely needs glue - and it's a bugger to pull them apart again! I will say that I just gave a fairly basic paint job to the cockpit using the moldings rather than the decals because... that's pretty much how the decals look, and when you check out the movies, the cockpits are basically a couple of red and yellow lights.... I'm super happy with how it's come out.
  6. This would have to be the most challenging and involved kit I've ever built. This is my first time doing some proper wear and weathering (spacering?). The kit itself is so detailed that I can just sit there and look at the detail in the molding. I didn't bother painting the yellow on the cockpit as it was so flush a fit. Probably should have for the gunsmoke markings but there you go. Brushed on lifecolor paints mostly, some of the airfix kit acrylics are on there, and a Tamiya copper to top it off. Smoke is smudged 2B and .2mm smudged fineliner. I tried doing chipping with pencil on the front of the engine pods but wasn't happy with that. Using an eraser to remove that took it off, in a manner, but I couldn't get the residue off so I decided to work with it and smudge it around. Applying a clear beforehand might have helped but I haven't done so. So. Many. Pipes. I enjoyed using a couple of different greys to create replaced panels and contrast around the build. The canopy isn't correct as I wanted to be able to see all the work I'd done on the cockpit!
  7. That was a good idea Winenut. I tried that with my 12 year old nephew, with both a Pacific Balsa kit at christmas a few years ago, and an airfix tomahawk for poops and giggles a little after that. The Tomahawk was never started - he doesn't even know where that is anymore (I got the Spitfire to build with him ) and everytime we had to wait for the balsa cement to dry he ran off to the PS4. It was like pulling teeth to get him to have a go. That still needs completing too. The F-94 is an impressive, yet disappointing model. A grand total of 16 parts (I think I used 8 as I didn't bother with landing gear or associated doors), but a hell of a lot of detail with the rivets and generally a pretty good fit, with none worth mentioning in the landing gear, cockpit, or tailpipe (you can literally look down the exhaust and look out the air intakes.) BTW, "Applenut" is our pet name for the baby to be (still hasn't arrived yet. SWMBO is waiting at the hospital!), if anyone was wondering where that came from.
  8. Gudday all. Long time lurker, haven't done any modelling seriously (or otherwise) for around 25 years but when my partner got pregnant I decided to build a mobile of various warplanes for the nursery. I don't have the skill or patience of you guys, but I'm pretty happy with how they've come out for the most part. Thanks for the inspiration in the results seen here. So, after a couple of months work, I've put together the following kits: Sopwith Camel (Academy) Spad XIII (From YEARS ago - painted over the ripped and dead decals. The SE5a had two lots of decals, so the Spad got the US set, the SE5a got the Brits..) SE5a + Albatros DIII (Italeri) Spitfire Mk1 (Airfix) Tiger Moth (Airfix) (oops, left the spru on the wing struts. Should have looked harder..) F-94 Starfire (Lindberg) Harrier (Airfix) A-37 Dragonfly (Hasegawa) A-10 (Academy, plus Hasegawa bomb kit from circa 1990) They're a little rough in spots, often due to kitbashing weapons onto the kits and retracting wheels that weren't supposed to be (Dragonfly and Warthog in particular). Paints were either the Airfix paints that came with the kits, or Lifecolour acrylics. I have a few others (Hasegawa Kfir in Isreali colours, Hasegawa Draken, Seahawk both from years ago that were in varying condition I didn't think were up to scratch) that aren't going up. I have an Iroquois to build at a later date too... I put it up today, and the baby will probably arrive tomorrow! It's a little disconcerting that the A-10 is flying straight at the cot... Thanks, Willy.
