  1. Bunch of never seen before (at least in my case) color pictures spanning WW2 - Vietnam have been posted at the National Archives site.  One that caught my eye was a derelict 109G-6/14 photographed at wars end, at the Messerschmidt factory in Augsburg.    Has a pretty interesting mish-mashed paint scheme, using mid and what appears to be late-war colors.

Reminds me of Yellow 5, which had similar scheme, as found in Kassel at war's end:

So anyway, wondering if anyone might have additional pictures of the unmarked Gustav above or if not, some pointers on the paint job?

That would be great, I have all their other sets but didn't realise they were planning that.

I keep hoping to find the D-Mold nose set.

Last update from Jefferey was that he's slowly starting to make some progress on the correction set after having it on the back burner for a year or so.

  3. Given that this weapon is supposed to be fielded on US Army AH-64E's next year, wondering if anyone has decent pictures of it's installation on US Apaches?   I've seen a few pictures of the mounting during trials but am guessing the final version will have some differences.

Thinking about adding Spike launchers to the Takom AH-64E I'm building.

Second, does anyone know why the FB-111A was not used in the alert

role? It was, after all, built specifically for SAC for the nuclear strike mission. As far as I know, it had little, if any, tactical use.

Just discovered this fascinating, yet a bit aged thread.   Regarding the FB-111A, it did stand alert as others have noted.   You wouldn't see them in Europe in a nuclear strike role, the two wings of FB's had a pretty specific mission in the SIOP.   This was to travel over the ice cap and knock out selected Soviet air defense sites near their border, to create corridors for B-52's / B-1's to penetrate deeper in Soviet territory.

  5. Embarrassing lack of decent QA/QC happing at these suppliers.   I feel we are one step away from getting news that Spirit screwed up big time, the issues are much more widespread than previously known and we will see mass groundings of the MAX fleet.   That's what BA gets for opting to divest something as important as aerostructures (not that BA's own QA/QC is much better from what is happening on the 787 down in Charleston).

I just read Dan Pedersen's 2019 book Top Gun (he was originally in charge of the school from it's inception) and he mentioned pilots who had flown the F-35 referring to it as the Penguin.

The bar for "cool" nicknames is apparently set pretty low here.   Points awarded for "Dave" just because it's got a large splash of Brit understated sarcasm.

I didn't know that they'd called the F-104 Lightning, even briefly.

Another wonderful program that produced great dividends for the shareholders.   Sorry you found the F-104 to be mediocre but that didn't stop non-US airforces from purchasing billions of dollars worth of them.   It's all good baby!

Why is the F-35 known as the Lightning II? Supposedly it's to honour the P-38 Lightning which operated in World War Two, but of course there has been another aircraft of that name in the years since - the English Electric version.

Is this a case of the Septics' infamous 'Not Invented Here' attitude? "Oh, it's just a Limey airplane, it doesn't count!"

Given their anal attitude to dynasties (80-year-old Joe Biden Junior, or the singer George Hamilton IV) you'd think they'd get that right.

Good troll-question.    Tell you what Gordy, you can call it whatever you like, as long as you demand his majesty keep buying them (I'm a LMT shareholder).    Why in the name of God would Lockheed remember or care that there was a mediocre, mostly forgotten, cold war jet with the same name?

  9. Just saw a build on YouTube where the builder gives up on the kit and assigns it to the Shelf of Doom over the horrible stencil decals (the guy calls them "stickers").    Any info if there are other aftermarket outfits doing decal for this kit?   So far I'm aware of Caracal (he specifically said he's not doing stencils) and Werner's Wings (he hasn't said either way).    Still hoping other companies will release something, given that these kits seem relatively popular.

  10. Wrapping up a very enjoyable build.   The Special Hobby version of this kit is vastly superior to the rather basic ICM kit.    To this, I added Quinta's cockpit set, some left over PE seatbelts and a bunch of scratchbuilt / spares box details (include XM-177 and M3 Grease Gun crew weapons, maps (just about every picture of a Cobra in Vietnam shows the cockpit cluttered with maps and the ubiquitous green log book.

Here are a few pictures of the cockpit under construction:

Amongst all the fantastic bits you get with the SH version, they also give you two amazingly detailed flight helmets.

  11. Canopy sides are in place.   The canopy is definitely the trickiest part of this build, so many opportunities to go horribly wrong.   On a side note - the instructions speciify using PE parts for the canopy struts, which, being flat, 2-D isn't really optimal.   However, not mentioned, is that the struts are also provided in plastic on sprue D.    Much better solution....

  12. Can't imagine the hard-pressed ground crew would have taken the time to remove the pylons (or mask them) when given the order to field camo those P-51D's.    If the underside was painted, the pylons would be in the same color.

  13. Just some pictures of my current build, 1/32nd AH-1G Cobra, "Centaurs" cav, circa 1971.    Kit is the SH version of the ICM Cobra that came out last year.   The ICM kit is pretty basic.  The SH version makes up for that with fantastic PE, canopy masks, 3D printed / resin parts of very high quality.  Best of all, the price isn't that much higher than the ICM kit!   Aftermarket bits used were the Quinta cockpit set, ASK decals, Werner Wings Rotor Hub Debris Deflectors and a lot of scratchbuilt bits.

  14. Semi-off topic.   Flew a brand new Delta A330 NEO back from LHR to BOS a few months ago.   Loved it.  Maybe it helped that the flight was only a third full and I was able to take an entire three row of seats all for myself?   Regardless, it was a very comfortable and quiet flight.   Especially compared to the packed 767-400 that I flew going over to London.

I will respectively disagree with you. I find the noise of the air circulation system to be unpleasantly noisy (my noise cancelling headphones are a godsend) and for all Boeing's boasts of a better cabin environment I find my eyes still suffer redness and aching on a long distance flight. The seat pocket is too small and the thinness of the seats means a jabbing in the back as the person behind tries to force their things in the pocket.

For me the A380 is much better. Quieter and larger seat pockets too.

All of the above however is qualified by the fact that long distance air travel stuffed in the back of any aeroplane is generally unpleasant irrespective of the manufacturer.

Regarding your complaints about the seats / seat pockets - you do realize that BA has nothing to do with the seats?   Cabin interiors are spec'd out by the airlines.   Got a problem with the small size of the seat pockets?  Write a strongly worded letter to your airline.

Please do! With bad instructions to deal with, I think any kind of help or build aid would be appreciated, especially considering the complexity of this kit. 😶

Lots of great info on building this kit here:

  17. I'm building the Special Hobby (ICM) 1/32nd AH-1G Cobra as a late war (71-72) helo.  One thing I've noticed is that a large number of these helos had various components painted black.   These include the aft engine cowling, the tailboom transmission cover, leading edge of tail fin, area around the canopy, etc.    Just wondering if anyone happens to know what the purpose was of this?   Doesn't seem like it had anything to do with individual markings.  Just curious....
