  1. Thats the good thing about marine models. You can always say they are "new builds" or just out of drydock. I left my platform in the original plastic colors and did not paint with the exception of the interior machinery components which as you know can't be seen anyway. You don't need rust. I'm not very good at weathering so that's my excuse. Did you ever get that Sikorsky? Still waiting for my display case. Currently working on the SS France and next will be the same model only as the SS Norway as I remember her as First Officer prior to scrapping in Alang India.
  2. Hi, yes. Go onto eBay USA and type in the following: 1/200 Scale Sikorsky S-92 Helicopter Model Matchbox Mission Chopper MBX Aircraft. Its the same one I have and he ships worldwide.
  3. Well fancy that! No I did not have decals in my kit. Interesting to know. I guess they may have been removed prior to my purchase on eBay. Anyhow I used a variety of methods to get the circles perfect i.e. measuring diameters and then making stencils and whatnots. None worked until I finally did it simply by hand. Still not quite perfect. What I did do to distract was to purchase a 1:200 commercial Sikorsky helicopter on eBay and placed it on the helipad. You should get one too. It would make a great addition to your excellent model Thanks for the info P & O

    Hull lines

Hi Giorgio, I have the tape now and so far so good. I didn't think there was that much adhesive but I am amazed at the things, techniques and methods we all use in order to perfect our models, yours included. Thanks for your reply. P & O
  5. Nice work Sir! I too considered the underwater part but the thing is so large as it already is that I abandoned that idea. My model is complete too but I am waiting for the display case to be built before I put all the components together on to the actual platform. You know what I mean. I need the platforms' legs to have pilot holes drilled into them so that it can be attached to the base. Once that is done all the modules get glued on. I noticed your helipad circles are very nicely painted. How did you mange that? They should have supplied decals for that. I will try to post some pics of mine. Anyway again "Nice work".

    Hull lines

Hi DC, Yes i have heard of the tape on youtube. I will have to get some and give it a shot. Thanx for the come back.
  7. I build ships and have used a variety of different methods of getting the perfect lines on a ship's hull. First you have the above waterline color known as boot top and then you have the wet/ dry area of the ship depending on whether she is fully loaded or empty and then you have below water line. So you can have three different colors. To get a perfect line I have used painters tape (not very good) since when you remove it from the hull and then tape it over the color you just painted in order to do the next color it will leave a residue on your paint. I've used silk scotchtape also not the best. So far the best has been contact paper but sometimes can leave a gummy residue. Then there is always paint creep. Does anyone have a foolproof version. Then you also always have the rounded stern section of the ship where you cannot get tape to go around perfectly. What would be the solution to that?
  8. I too build merchant ship models and although there are not as many of them like navy ships there are some interesting ones other than passenger ships. Have you heard of the Nedlloyd Bahrain (General Cargo), Nedlloyd Rouen (Ro-Ro), Trinity (GC), Toyama (Container)? There are also some rarer ones such as the Hawaiian Pilot (GC) (Re-issued under various names), JL Hanna (Tanker) (Re-issued under various names), Shell Welder (Tanker), Strathardle (GC), Talabot (GC), Free Enterprise II (Ro-Ro, Pax Ferry), Colombo Express (Cont.), Benledi (GC) (Re-issued as the Da Noli), Meteor (Research Vessel), Calypso (RV) (Re-issued as Research Vessel), Suroit (RV), Geopotes (Dredger). Savannah (GC/Pax), Arktika (pax/Ice breaker). Then there are lots of tugs (harbor and deep-sea salvage), SAR boats and a firefighter boat. Most I have accumulated on Ebay. Some are built and some not as of yet but will be. Do you have some others that I could look for?

  9. In the last 15 years I have seen, if memory serves me correctly, only five unbuilt Airfix FE II models for sale on Ebay. I suspect there are still plenty of them in the UK?
  10. Space Ranger, Thanx for the info. I have ordered Tamiya's set of Polishing Compound (Course, Fine and Polish). I'll give that a go first. I thought about toothpaste as we use that for removing scratches on plastic used for diver's equipment. It doesn't look great on the surface but at depth the gauges look like brand new.
  11. Hi there, I just signed up with you guys. I can't wait to see the final product. Thanx.
  12. Hi there, I just signed up with you guys as I researched SR-N4. Your model and photos are a real pleasure to view. Thank you. I am finally building my own kit which has been sitting in a closet for the last 10 years. Having not built an Airfix model in about 35 years, I was pleasantly reminded at how Airfix create their models very differently from say Monogram, Revell etc. I am having grave problems with the stern section of the craft and have had to modify many parts to make them fit. Also the clear overhead deck is very marred and I will see if I can get the plastic clear with grinding compound. I purchased this model on Ebay because I have been on this vessel going from Calais to Dover. But I was on the Seaspeed version hence mine will have the blue trim. Thanx again for the photos. I will post some when mine is out of shipyard.
