  1. A long time ago I worked in a car accessory shop. A posh Mercedes pulled up, the driver came in and asked for the cheapest oil we'd got. "We can give you the correct oil for your car, the cheap stuff isn't good for it" He then admitted that it was for the fuel tank. Paraffin (Kerosene) plus 10% engine oil.... He'd driven it all over Europe on that mix. Not eco friendly, but very cheap!
  2. The Gubment is looking for the biggest income. nothing to do with cleaner.
  3. A mate of mine bought one and we spent a day stripping it out and adding insulation and carpets….
  4. Oops. I meant 1300 sport. Flared front wings, rubber mats and quarter bumpers
  5. Just to add to the confusion, the 1300GT also had Mexico front wings.
  6. It's a long time ago... I think that the early base Escorts had 12" wheels, rather than 13".
  7. The investment casters that I worked with 25 years ago are micro-metalsmiths. Not too far from you in Yorkshire. I remember driving through Slingsby and past Castle Howard to get there….
  8. The rough external finish gives it away as a sand casting. Lost wax usually has a very smooth finish - it follows the surface finish of the wax. Lost wax (investment) castings are (sometimes) cast in a sandbox, but this supports the ceramic shell. The ceramic is added on as a slurry, forming a coating which is oven baked to fire the ceramic and melt the wax out of it.
  9. There is an engine starting spray in Australia/New Zealand called "Start Ya Ba**ard" https://www.nulon.com.au/products/aerosols/start-ya-ba**ard-instant-engine-starter You will need to insert your own letters into the web link.... When I post this it turns the "b" word into "sweetheart"
  10. I left the sceptred Isles 25 years ago. It's good to see that the Bat and Ball Club still exists....
  11. It's over a year! Phew! Who knew that moving to a supposedly perfect house would involve so much work..... So, new house, new workshop, new (to me) lathe (1983 Emco compact 8 ) and I've started on BM again. First (don't laugh) the cockpit floor The wheels are from Shapeways, actually dragster wheels and not quite the size they say they are - they work out at 18 1/2" instead of 19". They will do for now, and give me an idea how it will look. The jig positions the chassis at the correct angle - useful when fitting the floor, as it's parallel to the road. Pedals (No tittering again please) Fitted And painted, also the first of the rear springs As I'm concentrating on the rear axle, I needed to make the chain sprocket. Chain in this size is difficult to come by so I'm using Tamiya 1/6 motorbike chain - it's the closest I can find. I made the sprockets the same diameter as the originals, but because of the chain pitch difference they will have a different number of teeth. There are lots of sprockets to make - engine 1 to engine 2, (2) engine 2 to the gearbox (2) and the gearbox to the final drive (2). Not to mention the magneto drives which need another 4 sprockets.... I started on the smallest sprocket - less work if it goes wrong. On the 3rd try I got a work able sprocket, after trying various cutters and files. Here's the final drive sprocket being machined And all the drive sprockets Proof that the chain fits, and another shot of the gearbox cluster with clutch I can't avoid it much longer. To make the crankcases and gearbox I'm going to need a 3d printer... looking at the Elegoo Mars 2 Pro. But for now I need to finish the back axle!
  12. I might have done it a bit differently. I built up the Pocher rims stage by stage and filed and sanded the plastic down to the metal profile - then disassembled and fitted the spokes.
  13. Ooh, I might have sold it to you! Great to see one of the Pochers from GPM actually being built. I should finish mine sometime... Very nice build. Are you using MM wheels? If not you've done a superb job with the Pocher ones.
  14. Have you considered cocktail sticks? The rods were wooden with brass ferrules.
  15. Try getting a block of beeswax and "stabbing" the drill into it before drilling. If you don't want to be aggressive then cosmetic beeswax works too. Also good on saw blades.

    Covid Jab

Just had the first jab in NZ - Pfizer. Easy booking, no hassle, had to wait 15 minutes afterwards until they give you your vax card back. No side effects after 36 hours too.
  17. Well if they did, the information must be still available. After all, Jim Stokes Workshops makes brand new engines....
  18. Just like the real car then! The 1600 A110s came with a little jack to raise the body (fibreglass so flexible) over the engine enough to get the front spark plug out. The 1300 is ok, but the 1600 has a taller block.
  19. Stunning. The photo across to the reference bookshelf is especially realistic.
  20. Boy that takes me back! Superb - all of it! Apologies, but my brain is asking where the office or the mezzanine is - the office roof was a great place to store tyres, gearboxes, old bodywork etc. all coated in a liberal amount of dust....
  21. (Cough) Ferrari used suede on their seats as late as the 80s....
  22. The pudding stirrer gearstick certainly brought back some memories - including (almost a reflex reaction) dropping the left arm to the floor to start the thing! Did this one have the floor mounted starter button?
  23. I remember decalling all the 1/43 Vitesse 956's when they were issued. Somewhere about 37 in all.... Stunning collection though.
  24. I'll let you guess. Two current, two old. Clue - it's ANZAC day. OK I guess that you all give up. Spitfire, Avenger and two Texans....
