The DO17 I will be watching closely, as I haven't built this kit before.

Built this with my father nearly 34 years ago. Had the fab 'vertical' box art that they briefly re-released about five years ago. Although the kit itself went years ago, still very happy memories.
Will be watching! Paul

Good to see some of the less widely known participants in the BoB being represented. Will keep tabs on this!

This is going to be an iconic kit for me. One of my treasured BoB books is the Dennis Knight activity book I had as a boy.

In the first page, it had a re-touched image of a crashlanded Me 110. There's something about it that grabbed my attention, and I recently found the original image online, showing the codes. As it happened, I also found out that this precise airframe is an option in the Eduard kit, so job done! Am aware that the Eduard kit is apparently tricky in places, but am looking forward to it nonetheless.

Here's the kit.

I have been very interested in the BoB since I was about 6, and have been irrationally proud of the fact my birthday is also the official start date. Over the years I have amassed a decent amount of BoB literature. One of these (and something I am about to re-read) is Richard Hillary's famous book the Last Enemy, In it, it describes his training and entry into the BoB, and amongst other things his close friendship with Peter Pease also on 603 squadron. Peter Pease was shot down and killed in September. I have already built Pease's plane a couple of years using the still very good old tool Spitfire mk1, so I thought I'd do Hilary's plane to go with it - brothers in arms. I'll use Xtradecal generic codes to make this up according to the profile in the Osprey book.

Am looking forward to this - am planning to use the Xtradecal marks from the 70th anniversary sheet with the Devil nose art and pink bars. This should go nicely with the Italeri HE111 using decals from the same sheet.

Evening all,
Well, it's finally here. I am really going to go for it this summer; every year I build a BoB model, but this time I have cleared the decks of all unfinished models (well, apart from my Phantom for the F-4 GB!) and will be entirely concentrating on the BoB this Summer. First up is the Airfix 1/72 BF109E4 in the markings 2/JG3, this from the Xtradecal 70th BoB anniversary sheet. I am going to do this wheels up, which is a increasing trend with my modelling, and will go on an Airfix stand along with the JG27 example built last year. I'll be using an Eduard canopy set as well.

Well, not that I needed to, but somehow two Airfix 1/72 spitfires leapt into my hands at my local model shop yesterday...must be something tio do with the two Xtradecal BoB decal sheets I have just acquired....

Hallo all, well, had this on the go for the best part of eight years; this is to say that I started in eight years ago, slapped more filler than I thought possible and then left it in a box in my cupboard for eight years. I have always liked the Wyvern, and although tempted by the probably easier build of the Trumpeter kit was put off by the rivets. I set to with heavy duty sanding pads, and finally wrestled it into submission. Am pleased I did; it certainly makes for an impressive model, and Classic Airframes certainly seemed to have got the shape right even if fit was a bit iffy. I used the kit decals, and Xtracrylix/Tamiya paints; I plumped for the maroon indicated in the instructions for the spinner and finlets rather than the reds I have seen more commonly by using a Humbrol railway colour. Anyway... 8 years in the making!

Evening all,
Thought I'd post my latest project. The kit is the excellent Airfix Vampire T11 (3rd one I've done, and I can see several more down the way...) in Xtradecal marks for 8 sqn. Used eduard masks, Xtracrylix Silver and Tamiya Yellow. Top kit of a very interesting subject.

Fab model! Am half way through mine, which I am going to do in raf marks. What paints did you use for the two greys? Look spot on to me!

Superb job. Out of interest, what were the canopies like on your kit? Mine are a little less than one would hope for in a new kit.
Cheers, Paul

Considering I started the thread, I havent seriously thought about what I would build if it gets voted in. Have surveyed the stash, and it would either be a Hasegawa F-111F or EF-111A, or a hasegawa F-15C in CR or BT codes. Both emblematic aircraft of my late childhood and teens.

Count me in please.
Duly added to the list! Any ideas about what you might build if this gets voted in as a GB?

Time just seems to fly. Have been meaning to update this thread for at least a week, but damned work just gets in the way. Anyway, modelling doing its historic role of maintaining some semblance of escape! A few photos of progress; cockpit done, and fuselage joined up. Slightly dodgy fit of the canopy at the rear, so added a blob of milliput and pressed the canopy into it to form the grooves for the canopy hinges. I'll sand this smooth in due course. Major subassemblies done, i.e. tanks etc, and boring bits like undercarriage doors all done. Some reasonably aggressive sanding coming up, but all thoroughly enjoyable so far. Should have more this weekend, which can't come soon enough!

Any room for little ol me?
Jump right in!

I did "Patience my bottom" with this decal sheet, any choice as which one you will be doing?
Currently leaning toward 'trust me' but could go toward 'Cyrano de Bergerac'!

Hallo All,
I have been looking forward to this GB. I'm a bit of a fan of 80's ANG aircraft, and having had the Revell/Monogram F-4C (still apparently regarded as a 'Good Kit') and the Superscale decals for the Michigan ANG in the stash for a while, it seemed like the ideal opportunity! Obligatory box shots follows. I am also going to add Master brass pitots for the fin, and I am contemplating some aftermarket exhausts. I've also made a start on filling ejector pin marks, and getting assemblies such as cockpit and drop tanks together. Although the kit has raised lines, these are very well done - more rivet head detail than raised panel lines, and as such seems more realistic. Reviews amongst Phantom enthusiasts has this being better than the Hasegawa kit for overall accuracy; not sure how the new Academy kit measures up in this regard, but I do know that I need to build from the stash rather than adding to it! There is also something reassuringly old school about this kit; It has great detail in the cockpit and ejector seats, but not the thousands of parts that seem to be de rigeur for new kits. Anyway....

Utterly awesome. As soon as the decals are out for it, this goes straight to the top of the pile... Procopius, would it count in the BoB groupbuild?!

Looks grand! What paints did you use?

Wow - that Battle of Britain Typhoon is absolutely amazing! I was hoping the RAF would pull out the stops for this! Now, I need Xtradecal to add this to a sheet, and for Revell to reissue their 1/48th Typhoon! I have a backlog of Typhoon specials that is rapidly expanding! Funnily enough, I did a 1/144 Revell Typhoon in almost exactly this scheme as a WHIF for the 75th Anniversary of the BoB about three years ago.

Right - the Austrian contingent! Airfix Vampire OOB with decals cobbled together from the spares box. Thanks to the hosts for a top GB!

Well, all done! Decals on and final gloss coat, then remove masks! Am well pleased with this - I love this kit, and as a canvas for different markings and schemes it's unbeatable. The decals are a combination of kit stencils, and national marks and codes from the spares box. Now to join the Draken and Typhoon on the Austrian AF shelf; an F-5E next! More pics in the Finished Gallery!

Malta Spitfire in 1/48th
in Ready for Inspection - Aircraft
Posted
Evening all,
Have been clearing the decks for the Battle of Britain GB, and this is one of the deck clearees. If there is such a word. Anyway, a OOB new tool Spitfire MkV in Malta colours - used Tamiya XF53 dark gray for the ship applied camo. Thoroughly enjoyed it; am looking forward to doing the MK1.
