I’m aware this falls short of the usual quality around here, but I really like the kit, and hope others who can do it more justice than I did give it a go in the near future.

Thanks for looking (and reading all this waffle!)

Tosh! lol... That looks really good, I am presuming the parts count wasn't exactly in treble figures though? 😂 Think I've seen a review of it and it sure fits in the cancelled projects, I'm attracted to stuff shown at Farnborough in the 50's-60's and whilst not there this fits in a treat

Do like the Concorde too even if it's only a bit part lol

  2. I was asked last time about using computers and I said for about 10-20% of my time at work and then was asked about hobbies, think what he was getting at was I could get away without varifocals/bifocals but either way it didn't matter

I have very short short sightedness (not far off getting help off the NHS with paying for lenses) but because of this I think I should have become a watch repairer as close up I have incredible vision so no need for magnifiers which is very handy for this hobby lol

TBH with the people who I know (especially the ones who knew I went to Telford) all knew about modelling anyway but then again they are all mainly older, surprisingly some of the youngers ones under 30 have been well into Lego, to the extent of spending hundreds of pounds on sets, for me, Lego is pointless for replica's, but then that's just my opinion

  3. Working in a busy supermarket I get all kinds of characters every day, some are truly lovely and I do whatever I can to help solve their query, even feeling genuinely sorry if I can't, there are some who do ask where this is or whatever............ some walk off even before I've even finished the sentence of where to go so they've no chance of even getting close to the right area............... some seem to listen and promptly go in the entirely wrong direction and I have to chase after them................... some are literally right next to what they want but we often have a laugh about "can't see for looking" kind of thing.................. some ask for where the produce is and yet you have to walk through the department to get into the rest of the shop ..............., some who are foreign get their phone out and show a picture or a translation of what they want ............................... some we just muddle through and get there in the end, mostly down to pronunciation to be honest......... some have been downright rude about accent, to the point of accusing me of not being English and yet they aren't themselves and yet some get really annoyed when I can't understand a word they are on about as every single word they say I don't understand..

So yes it can be interesting and fun working in a supermarket, not often mind though lol

  4. I'm not getting my fingers burnt as in Victor and Buccaneer where I had the older kits with buying a Hasegawa version only for a new one to come out :) so I'm not going to buy a Hasegawa/Revell one until a newer one appears, however long that will be, it had better be before a Jaguar though as I've got a GR1 teasing me on the shelf daring me to make it before a new one comes out

Although exclusively UK I'd have honestly thought the K/M would have had more takers in the kit world than it has, but then a Sea King didn't either but anyway to me it's the best looking one (looks more beefy with the wider fuselage) and it still a Phantom and to echo above I've never had a whiff of ZM doing one, having said that who's to say a rumour will surface in the future about Arifix doing one because of this thread lol

Never book anything in or around Telford, I'm booked in at a premier Inn over by Shrewsbury. It's not too far a drive, and is quite a quick drive over on the Sunday morning. I've said this before, but due to a very high dislike of overly crowded places (autistic thing, with personal space issues....) I only ever go on the Sunday when it's a little quieter, relatively speaking of course... I know it's still busy, and I can prepare my self accordingly. Plus, with it being Remembrance Sunday as well, makes more of an occasion for me.

Neither do I, used to book in a B&B in Condover which is south of Shrewsbury for the Fri-Sat night, go somewhere the Saturday (been Cosford, Shrewsbury Town, Ironbridge -twice and Ludlow) and then to Telford the Sunday, mainly 'cos I like to see what has won what and it's as you say quieter so with this mindset I don't really care where I end up so not disappointed, this year thinking fo staying in Shrewsbury itself, even if it's a guest house, I like Shrewsbury, from previous visits it comes across better than my own town

I'm sorry, John, but there must be some folks out there who do not have any Internet access (and have no friends who can print a ticket for them). What do these people do when they turn up? It's simply not fair to just assume that everyone is Web Savvy.

    Chris.

I agree completely in regards to assuming everyone is web savvy, I don't have a smart phone and get incredibly annoyed when others look at me like I just landed from outer space because I don't have one, I don't need one and I don't have a printer either as don't need one but there are always out of this problem, not sure if a library can be visited to order and print out, neighbours, even other members if in a club, I've had to ask several different work colleagues to print off tickets for me, another work colleague ordered some concert tickets for me and my partner uses her smart phone if I need e-tickets.

Unfortunately it's the way of the world nowadays and it's also cheaper to set up ticket sales like this so I can't see it changing

  7. Very shrewd of Airfix, not the subject but of announcing in July, just ahead of the school holidays so the brand gets more attention than it would have if the Sea King was announced with the rest of the range in the Winter, this way interest is kept in the brand for far longer than it would have been if all the releases were announced together, could be the sign of things to come..

Do like a Sea King, bought the Hasegawa kit years ago and basically forgot about it, if I'd known they were going for such prices I'd sold mine already! Need to get into my stash so the old kits I have (Jaguar 1/48 comes to mind) aren't redone and so ruin my pension fund lol... Already been burnt with Matchbox Victor

  8. Don't get me wrong, eBay isn't what it was but for as a alternative to Amazon it works fine for me (who else gets stuff delivered in Amazon boxes for stuff bought on Fleabay :) ) which also is handy to all those scamming emails/phone calls saying my Amazon account is hacked when I don't even have one haha

For now though it's very handy for buying new or even finding stuff, that obscure car part for example - all my cars are obscure - just enter the part number and you could strike it lucky, even going onto the US or Australian sites, it has a more relevant search than say Google, using Google brings up something that is totally unrelated and I just like watching game shows I can't waste my life looking at Google search results

  9. PayPal and eBay used to be bed fellows but not anymore, PayPal has nothing to do with eBay now and whilst you can still pay for stuff via PayPal no problem to me Ebay tries to dissuade me from using it - not as simple as it used to be, still easy mind but the whole reason on me using PayPal is my payment details are held in one place, I prefer to use PayPal because of this, even when on other websites I'll swap to a business who takes payment from PayPal than one who doesn't

  10. I was going around the same time as you, gave up around 10 years ago, price, the sheer distance to travel, traffic and the static/display variety conspired together for me to conclude it wasn't worth it

I don't think it matters which car park you end up in (some are still off field?) you've still got alot of walking so even though you can walk in and out in my opinion it's not worth it, spend the energy getting around the static! Having said that the free bus service is very handy, once we'd looked at the static it was a trip back on the bus back to the entrance, walk to the car, have something to munch and then repeat on the way back.

Early is the way to go, seems it hasn't changed and 7am is a sound idea, we'd have to leave before 5am from Suffolk and never got back until midnight, was always worse leaving and left  late, often having a look in at Tom O'Connor I think it was when on stage?!

I did a quick bit of comparison and found some interesting stats: the 1978 Air Show at Bassingbourn (one which promised a lot but ended up a bit of a damp squib) had a £2 entry price for adults. In 2023 equivalent that's £10. And IAT at Greenham in 1981 was £4. Again, calculating for inflation, the 2023 equivalent is £14.12.

So it does beg the question - why the high prices? And why are we paying £65-odd for a RIAT ticket when IAT in 1981 was a quarter of that?

I would also cost in the increase in labour for these, stewards, traffic measures -we all know that even digging a small hole in the path means having traffic measures with the extra bods associated with this, Police charges, RIAT had temporary pelican crossings set up, even cutting the grass as the huge increase of car ownership has meant more space and logistics to accommodate this (for my 1st few years of going to airshows I went on a bus/coach set up by the local bus company) but I would surmise the biggest increase now is insurance, especially since Shoreham

  12. Not quite the same but similar, whilst on a visit to Telford one year my partner and I visited other areas as it's quite a trip from Suffolk and so we ended up at Blists Hill Victorian Town near to Ironbridge (fascinating place, well recommended, even in November!) and whilst walking from one area to another I had an almighty shove from behind, fortunately I kept on my feet and looking behind me to see what caused there was a boy of around 17 who was mentally impaired in some way, (had heard him earlier on, a sort of scream that was to be honest unsettling and when in a cottage demonstrating life in Victorian times so I had seen him and how he was) until I gathered who it was and what was going on I was pretty incensed but then that immediately disappeared when I realised who it was but the point was his carer/parent acted like nothing had happened, no apology, no asking if I was ok, no explanation as to why he did it, it's almost like it's normal for the pair of them.

My partner said she'd said something but I didn't bother, I wasn't physically hurt but it did spoil the day as I was then concerned he'd do it again somewhere else on the site, could I have said something, yes I could but in a way I felt I daren't as then I'd be fearful that I'd be labelled as picking on someone who is impaired even though I had good reason too, not sure if that is me or is that a result of society now.

  13. Heller done the Alize - pretty similar in my opinion so why not the Gannet, always fancied picking up the Alize if it wasn't for the fact I'd probably never start it let alone finish it 🤣

Airfix done the Walrus which can be argued just as left field and it done well? Presume it must have as projects like this would have less chance of being released though this is an assumption on my part

Great for those who wanted one but I can't help feeling this is a bit of a niche choice. I can't see many outside the UK buying it on impulse, particularly at £55 and 1960/70s FAA isn't the biggest fan base. Hopefully Airfix know what they are doing though but I feel there are bigger opportunities being missed. And disappointingly (for me at least) it's the only "new new" 1/48 offering this year.

So was the Javalin if we are being honest about it.

I think there are a lot of FAA supporters out there on the quiet.

Sometimes Airfix just want to look after  their hard core friends.

Gets my vote every time BUT I just love FAA subjects.

    Dick

It probably is, but personally and maybe there are many like me where I buy kits on what I like the look of and don't give a damn about scale, subject etc and you can say many things about the Gannet but one thing is for sure nothing else looks like it :) If I have to be pinned to an interest it's the sort of thing seen at Farnborough in the 50's/60's and this does slot in well so I'll be nabbing one to join the Sea Vixen and Javelin which of course I haven't built 😁

There are also plenty of survivors about and had a long career so with being so different it could do well, Airfix seems to think so, they have a much wider perspective than we do and for sales abroad, I'm guessing the vast majority of Airfix kits are sold in the UK anyway, this produced in UK too hopefully

  15. Got the stance of it great, looks like it weighs a ton just sitting there! Got a real weakness for 50-60's British AFV's and may well have to get one at some point, you've done a good job there - can see your point about differing looks of differing parts but meh, it's all a learning curve, with a bit of careful extra weathering much of it is fixable? I've done the same (tried to get out of it by a light colour ground up artists pastel dry brushed all over it, mixed results!) and I'm sure loads have done it too and it's half the fun for me of improving for the next build and if in your case it's another AFV then that's good, same as me, the enthusiasm is still there. At the end of the day it looks damn good, now, what's the next one? 🙂

  16. Just finished mine, well, just about, such a relaxing build that like you took me only 2-3 hours, it maybe old but it fitted together with no problems, much to be said about these old Tamiya's and with some at really bargain prices now it tempts me big time to get some of the others, even ones I bought in the long distant past.
Thinking on it I believe it took longer painting than putting together, though haven't done anything with the figures, my skills don't do figures justice. Makes a change to the numerous 50 year old Airfix and limited run kits I've been doing for what seem years!

Anyway, keep it up, fascinated to see how you do the finishing 👍

I built the Accurate Armour Commander & Trailer over 20 years ago.  God it was a MONSTER but looked superb - especially with a Challenger on the trainer, all chained down.  IIRC even during the 90s it was norther of £100!

Co-incidentally I've just been looking on their website.... £340 now.........

I'm not aware of that company, any info on the quality of their kits?

Now, I am in a quandary...........   do I go for the Diamond T or wait for the Scammell Commander?  :hmmm:  Either way, I need to do some very serious creeping and grovelling to swmbo :kissing2:   :worthy: :please:

food, heating and lighting   :undecided:  or kits?

According to Scalemates it's the Merit kit, which it would appear is American.... so maybe the tools have been picked up/lent

Did you check via "I Love Kit"? Assuming you mean the Diamond T that is, Commander is due soon as I hope to get hold of one :)

  20. Can't remember how I got onto it but EMA Plastic Weld is my choice with Revell's Contacta tube for the bigger pieces such as tank hulls or fuselages, EMA is great for capillary which is nearly all of my building which is holding the objects together and then applying the glue, can be tricky at times - wish I had 3 hands sometimes! - but you get strong bonds with less "overspill" so to speak as the joints don't move, of course that's my method so bare in mind how you build to what glue is best for you.

Why EMA to Tamiya? Sheer price, 50% more and 50% of the price, no it doesn't have a brush in the cap but for me a small old paint brush is way way better than the brush in a cap Tamiya, much more accurate
