  1. Now that does bring the Viscount memories flooding back. The screech of those four Darts and the whiff of Jet A1 as they taxied off stand at Eastleigh. A jump seat trip on G-BBVH from Gibraltar to Tangier and back. Such is the power of your diorama Andrew. Guess its a big part of what the hobby is all about. Sadly the subject, G-AOYL was Scrapped at Southend around 1991, not before donating many parts to help in the preservation of G-APIM at Brooklands.

  3. Just a public vote of thanks to Nick Webb of Classic Airlines. For those unaware Nick produces a large range of decals covering a number of Civil types and their operators from the 1950's onwards. My last Two orders were received the next day and previous experience has shown his decals to be very civilized to use (No pun intended).
  4. A Very nice build and finish with great attention to detail with the extra cabin windows and correct Ariel's. I seem to recall that SV had de icing boots on the tail planes as well as the fin, mind you I'm going back 36 Years. Do I see an Eastern Airways Dakota lurking in the background?
  5. That's a very nice build of the old Monogram kit. I like the subtle staining around the nacelles. I was unaware of that Dakota accident. Derby Airways lost a Dakota in the Pyrenees in 1961 and Six Years late Air Ferry a DC 4. Sadly many more aircraft both Civil and military have come to grief in the region over the Years.

  7. Hello John, Thank you for your interesting observation. The other C 47, Ex Spanish A/F C/N 19975 G-BHUB painted as G-AGIV used in the series certainly had a rotating beacon on top of the fin. As I recall G-DAKS did not at that time, She certainly acquired One at some stage as current pictures of the airframe now on the US register as N147DC show. G-BHUB now hangs from the roof of the American Air Museum at Duxford. Kind Regards Guy

  9. A bit of a phoenix this One. The intension was to build the kit as G-AMCA of Air Atlantique. Having got to the decaling stage I found that the transfers I had would not fit the Airfix tooling. I was now left with a semi competed White Dakota with Grey wings and an astrodome. Not wishing to carry out a full re spray I made a cup of tea and considered the options. This is the result, The former TS423 as operated by Aces High in Ruskin Air Services livery for the Yorkshire Televisions series "Airline". The kit assembled reasonably well. I had some fettling to do to get the wings and spar to fit snugly. The Navigators window was opened out and an exit hatch added over the cockpit. The decals were home made by my late uncle about 25 Years ago hence the rather shiny backing.
  10. 1/200 in not my preferred scale to work with being rather petite but wanted an Orion jet for the collection. It's the Hasegawa kit with 26 decals. The kit goes together beautifully and looks like Boeings baby. Unfortunately the decals were a bit old having been stored since purchased Twenty years ago and gave me some worrying moments. Orion Airways was formed by Horizon holidays and made its inaugural service in March 1980. The company was bought by Thompson in 1988 and its operations were integrated into Britannia Airways.
  11. Superb build of an Airfix classic. Murphy's war is probably One of my favourite films. It was based on the book by Max Catto which featured a Swordfish and had a rather different ending to the film. Many Moons ago Aeroplane Monthly featured the Aircraft used in the film.
  12. Thank you. Yes I do have another One with a set of Autair decals from S&M. I'am no rivet counter but like the Airfix Dakota I think Valom have captured the look of the Viking well. Autair may have to wait as my next build will either be the Fly models Bristol 170 or Valom Twin pioneer.
  13. Recently completed for a freind, The Valom 1/72 scale Vickers Viking of BEA circa 1953. Built OOB with Flight path DC 3 decals and finished with Humbrol acrylics. After service with BEA Victor Delta was sold to a European operator who in turn sold the aircraft to Hugh Kennard's Air Ferry at Manston. They were to be her last operator. The airframe was scrapped during 1967. Not a shake and bake build but I am grateful for an injection moulded kit of these less popular types.

  15. Having previously experienced excellent service I was surprised not to have received an order placed last year. Enquiries led me to believe the proprietor of Classic airlines has ongoing health problems as the result of a car accident.
  16. Beautiful build. Always thought those colours suited the aeroplane well. I recall the Rothmans team using them before going over to the Pitts. I'm looking forward to seeing the diorama.
  17. Hi Goggsy, Thank you for the post and pictures. I guess due to the remoteness of the location most of the wreckage was buried on site. A poignant reminder of the accident.
  18. Coming along nicely prof. The astrodome bubble was removed on 947 and the base ring had a flat circular plate over it. Here is what I did on my build, I am sure yours will be more tidy. Wise words as ever from they jammed Kenny, It is One of the disadvantages of the way the Airfix kit is designed that you you have to get the cowlings and engines on at an early stage. It also makes using aftermarket engines rather tricky which is a shame as from a personal view the rather basic kit engines and heavily weighted wheels let he kit down.
  19. Superb an interesting subject and nice build. You may wish to try and find a copy of "Shadows" the airlift and Air war in Nigeria 1967-1970 by Michael Draper ISBN 9781902109633. Its a large format hardback with many previously un published photographs and a lot of colour profiles.
  20. Re Chipmunk UHF sets the pilots notes state "Certain RAF aircraft are fitted with a PTR 1751 PP. Army aircraft have a PTR 1751BB". Post mod H365 Aircraft are fitted with a 7000 channel PTR 1751. I hope the information is of use. G
  21. Thank you all. I am somewhat overwhelmed by the positive comments. I'll try varying the shades silver used on any future builds, Though the next Dakota planned is white and grey either G-AMCA or 'NAF in the Atlantique coloured bands scheme from the early 80's. Regarding the Flaps Alex their a kit option, I did have to add a strip of plasticard to cover the gap where the wing centre section goes onto with the fuselage. Very sharp noticing the control locks.
  22. This model was completed a wee while ago using Humbrol rattle cans. It's the old Esci Eastern Airways issue that comes with a set of passenger seats. The decals were from S&M. Built pretty much out of the box nothing complicated. Finding my camera tripod gave me the excuse to dust it off and take some snaps. BKS Air transport took its name from the first letters of the Three directors, Barnaby, Kegan and Stevens. The company operated from the 1950's through to the early 1970s when its name was changed to Northeast prior to being fully absorbed into British Airways. G-AMVC was an ex RAF Dakota. Sadly she crashed on the 17Th of October 1961 with the loss of Four crew South East of Crosby on Eden (Carlisle) airfield.
