  1. Wow, very nice! Your boxing idea works especially well with the vehicle models. R2 with lighting looks awesome. I am definitely going to have to copy your display base ideas.
  2. I'd guessed at the box title being used, the risers though make a huge difference - I would never have considered that. I have mental plans for displaying the version I intend to build, but these were mainly around the 'tree stump' and how to modify that, I might now also consider raising it up as you have and (amongst other things) boxing in the back of the existing tree stump support structure. I am desperately trying not to crack any 'thinking outside of the box' puns over the box lid writing and the boxing in you have done. Nice work with the paint on the Bed roll by the way it looks togtally different from the Ines in the Sprue shots I've been looking at.
  3. I love what you have done with the kit supplied stand; raising it up that little bit makes a huge difference. Nice build. Is that the original bed roll on the back - it looks like you have done an 'AndyRM' and remodelled it?
  4. Matt, please don't remove the thread. We are all learning a lot from this build. Can I also point out that you also stated from word go that you had not realised this was a recast. As you say to Kasparov his words and views are eloquently put, but this kit is from a now (regrettably) defunct company, you are no longer hurting them in building this model - things would be entirely different if this was a knockoff or poor copy of a Bandai, Airfix or Revel kit (to name but 3), of this had been the case you would be right to pull the thread. Kasparov, if you are reading this response, I appreciate your comments, your sentiments and the fact that you took the time to comment in such a pleasant manner - plenty of other forums I used to look on would have taken the opportunity to simply Troll 5s over this matter; these manufacturers have now ceased trading and we all regret that fact. I thank you for your views and welcome you to this part of the forum (never seen any of your threads here, but I am a recent member). Leigh
  5. Cheers Plasmahal; adds Flory dirt washes to ever growing list
  6. Can I ask what you use/used to clean the wash off?
  7. That is really nice. This is definitely going on my list of future purchases, the only problem is that list is getting VERY long. But I love the job you have done here.
  8. Speaking as a mechanical engineer I would say you need to knock up a quick little jig to help you with the cutting, drill some holes for pins in a block of wood the correct edge distance to act as stops, sandwich and clamp the sheets that have been rough cut to the required size and then file the lot down to the right dimensions in 1 go. Oh oh how I wish I had a milling machine and a lathe in my workshop too.
  9. I have to say, you are being far more patient with this build than you have any right to be. It's looking a hell of a lot better already, but I'm guessing you have a big list of things to do that are going to make us all smile on here. Very nice work so far.
  10. Never had any of the action figures, I think my R2 was the MPC kit because I also had 3PO and an X-Wing. Well I had some good advice from you all on here, it was surprising how much of a difference adding the second weathering colour helped.
  11. I feel exactly the same, back in the late 70's I had one of the original R2 kits - he has always been my favourite
  12. Thanks Hunter - I have learned a lot from this build.
  13. Had a look at my built but not competed BB8 today. I've started to add a pin wash but the little fella is so shiny that it's having trouble sticking so a rethink is required. I ended up thinning my paint and adding a drying inhibitor and then painting it on and carefully wiping it off, this seemed to fill some of the panel lines but not all; I also need to add 2 water slide decals that I simply could not hand paint. I also have no idea yet how I'm going to display him so I'm afraid BB8 is going into storage until I can decide that.
  14. Aah well, now we have the real problem. The kit I have is the BB8 and R2D2, but I think I rather fancy buying the 3P0 kit for the other side. I'd like to see if I can put goldenrod into the Hoth base setting but I'm not sure my scratch building skills are up to that. Nice 'Why Bird' btw
  15. The hiatus should have been shorter - my son got me the kit for Christmas last year! Still you can't rush these things. I still have to build the diorama bookend but I have to collect lots of greeblies for what I have planned (and coffee jar lids it would seem judging by lots of other builds ). I have have really enjoyed building this though.
  16. Cheers BrotherMole, that's very kind. It got away from me at one point in the painting but I was lucky and managed to recover it. Next up is BB8 and I have to learn how to do pin washes on that one.
  17. I never even knew this was available in kit form yet... might have to spend some money here looks really nice btw, really nice.
  18. Well folks here he is, finished at last. Some of you have read the WIP thread for this little fella which chronicled not my build, but the process of learning how to paint and weather a kit; this being my first build following a break of 35 years and realistically the first I have truly painted. The WIP thread can be found here: http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/235011076-bandai-r2d2-and-bb8-newbie-wip/ Ultimately R2 is destined to be a bookend, but until I sort that part out, here is my finish painted model: A big thank you to Rockpopandchips, AndyRM101 and Oileanach for their technical help when it all went "Pete tong", but thanks to everyone else who watched and commented on my WIP with words of encouragement. I'm going to detail paint BB8 next and see if I can get away without using any of the transfers or stickers as I did with R2. thanks for looking, smeggy
  19. Cheers Andy, I listened to what you all said (and do in your build threads) about layering and so I started and it just quickly came alive - it was rather like spraying a fade effect using a full size spray gun where I just got steadily higher with the same thickness of paint, the lower sections just got more layers and got darker. I also slightly darkened the later layers too.
  20. SO, after listening to all of your advice (thank you all), I believe I have managed to recover R2! I stared by rubbing him all over with some kitchen roll which actually removed the worst of the nuln oil tide marks, so reinvigorated I set to applying a wash of my own creation (I got some proper Vallejo thinning agent). This was a total disaster as it was far far too heavy, but rather than try to thin it properly I decided to try dry brushing with it first. This was a lot better so I just started building up layer after layer: Once I finally get an airbrush then dust washes etc will be easier, but I figure I have to learn the basics first, so I'm calling this done! I'll chuck a thread in RFI when I get a chance later. Thanks for looking Leigh
  21. Mole, you sound just like me, I've returned after an even longer break and am struggling with weathering but learning a lot from every single build thread I read. I think it looks great, I especially like your little R2. The weathering you have done gives this x-wing a real used and abused look. This is in my list of probable future builds so thanks for the warning about the helmet decals!
  22. Yeah I love the 'yellow primer' landing gear bay too. Reminds me of this: This is how they used to leave our factory.
  23. Not even a "hokey religion" according to some smuggler captains I could mention. Saw Rogue 1 on Sunday. Very nicely done.
