  1. Thanks Hunter - I have learned a lot from this build.
  2. Had a look at my built but not competed BB8 today. I've started to add a pin wash but the little fella is so shiny that it's having trouble sticking so a rethink is required. I ended up thinning my paint and adding a drying inhibitor and then painting it on and carefully wiping it off, this seemed to fill some of the panel lines but not all; I also need to add 2 water slide decals that I simply could not hand paint. I also have no idea yet how I'm going to display him so I'm afraid BB8 is going into storage until I can decide that.
  3. Aah well, now we have the real problem. The kit I have is the BB8 and R2D2, but I think I rather fancy buying the 3P0 kit for the other side. I'd like to see if I can put goldenrod into the Hoth base setting but I'm not sure my scratch building skills are up to that. Nice 'Why Bird' btw
  4. The hiatus should have been shorter - my son got me the kit for Christmas last year! Still you can't rush these things. I still have to build the diorama bookend but I have to collect lots of greeblies for what I have planned (and coffee jar lids it would seem judging by lots of other builds ). I have have really enjoyed building this though.
  5. Cheers BrotherMole, that's very kind. It got away from me at one point in the painting but I was lucky and managed to recover it. Next up is BB8 and I have to learn how to do pin washes on that one.
  6. I never even knew this was available in kit form yet... might have to spend some money here looks really nice btw, really nice.
  7. Well folks here he is, finished at last. Some of you have read the WIP thread for this little fella which chronicled not my build, but the process of learning how to paint and weather a kit; this being my first build following a break of 35 years and realistically the first I have truly painted. The WIP thread can be found here: http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/235011076-bandai-r2d2-and-bb8-newbie-wip/ Ultimately R2 is destined to be a bookend, but until I sort that part out, here is my finish painted model: A big thank you to Rockpopandchips, AndyRM101 and Oileanach for their technical help when it all went "Pete tong", but thanks to everyone else who watched and commented on my WIP with words of encouragement. I'm going to detail paint BB8 next and see if I can get away without using any of the transfers or stickers as I did with R2. thanks for looking, smeggy
  8. Cheers Andy, I listened to what you all said (and do in your build threads) about layering and so I started and it just quickly came alive - it was rather like spraying a fade effect using a full size spray gun where I just got steadily higher with the same thickness of paint, the lower sections just got more layers and got darker. I also slightly darkened the later layers too.
  9. SO, after listening to all of your advice (thank you all), I believe I have managed to recover R2! I stared by rubbing him all over with some kitchen roll which actually removed the worst of the nuln oil tide marks, so reinvigorated I set to applying a wash of my own creation (I got some proper Vallejo thinning agent). This was a total disaster as it was far far too heavy, but rather than try to thin it properly I decided to try dry brushing with it first. This was a lot better so I just started building up layer after layer: Once I finally get an airbrush then dust washes etc will be easier, but I figure I have to learn the basics first, so I'm calling this done! I'll chuck a thread in RFI when I get a chance later. Thanks for looking Leigh
  10. Mole, you sound just like me, I've returned after an even longer break and am struggling with weathering but learning a lot from every single build thread I read. I think it looks great, I especially like your little R2. The weathering you have done gives this x-wing a real used and abused look. This is in my list of probable future builds so thanks for the warning about the helmet decals!
  11. Yeah I love the 'yellow primer' landing gear bay too. Reminds me of this: This is how they used to leave our factory.
  12. Not even a "hokey religion" according to some smuggler captains I could mention. Saw Rogue 1 on Sunday. Very nicely done.
  13. I can't believe I never thought to look for a rattle can option! I'm still going to get myself an airbrush though, there are too many things it will make so much easier. I'm going to mix some other washes of my own and try to undo some of the worst of what I did. Obviously the reason I was having a lot of success with the GW wash earlier is because it was in small areas and they were also painted. I'll chalk this one up to experience. Thank you you all for your advice, I'll get back on with R2 and perfect my technique a little more before I attempt to touch BB8. Leigh
  14. To be honest I had always planned to use a number of different colours, but as soon as the work with the nuln oil started getting away from me all plans went out of the window (I couldn't understand what was going wrong because it had stuck to the tools I'd painted and flowed exactly as I had wanted). I'll try a sponge - would never have thought of that - cheers Rockpop Hmm not got myself an airbrush yet Andy, I'll have to see how I can recover things using some of your suggestions - I have some Vallejo flow retarder will that work like the product you suggested or should I go with washing up liquid as suggested by Rockpopandchips? I'll have a good old thin down, the silver I used for the chipping is actually Vallejo metal air white aluminium and once I got used to how it flowed and moved (when I painted the periscope) I managed to get that to work rather well. There is something very satisfying and relaxing about chipping. Thank you all for your kind words of encouragement; this forum really is a friendly and educational place to hang out, I am learning so much just by reading all of the build threads and ready for inspections! right, where is that little sponge...
  15. So, finally managed to bag myself some time in the garage to spend learning to weather R2. If I'm brutally honest I'm not very happy with how it's going, but this is the first ever attempt so I suppose I'm not going to make things to the standard of AndyRM101 straight away. I felt I was actually getting somewhere with adding paint chip effects on the blue plastic (remember none of this is painted - just pure kit finish) I'm also pleased with how the detail painting I did to the dome went; I ended up not using a single transfer or sticker. The weathering though has to be done again it Looks rubbish. Tide marks and other badly done areas. So I think I need to strip all of the nuln oil off the body and start over, what do folk recommend on here for doing this?
  16. I have seen a few people on this board discussi g how bad vinyl re-casts can be, but this is the first one that I have seen, boy have you had your work cut out so far!
  17. I'm loving that rusty panel and the 'bodge tape'
  18. The Clarecraft stuff was fantastic, I've recently been hitting a well known auction site to fill in the gaps in my collection (Magrat has been missing for years). Now I find out they do these too! Lovely job you are doing; the book on the base looks brilliant, is it by any chance going to be the "libre paginarium fulvarium"?
  19. To be honest Mike, when I read the post where you said you wanted to lighten him I thought "no no he looks fine as he is", but now you have repainted and added the dust wash etc he looks an awful lot better. Impressive, I worry with what I'm doing that I'll go too far with weathering etc, but I can see from this that you also have to be brave and know when to have another go too. Looks excellent.
  20. Not so keen on the books after 'Speaker for the dead', but I digress - just reread the post about the exploding head; this is another but I'm looking forward to now!
  21. The US navy issues a sort of special kindle to submarine crews and Enders Game is one of the books loaded to the device, apparently it was included because of the lessons that it teaches regarding tactics etc. You both also need to read Starship Troopers (ignore the film completely it is nothing at all like the book). I loving this build though, you tantalised us earlier with artwork shots for his helmet, I'm looking forward to that part too.
  22. Don't get me started on the movie adaptation of that book! I mean they gave away one of the main plot twists in the trailer when they showed Mazer Rackham was still alive.... anyway back ti to the build - this is simply awesome!
  23. Us Pratchett fans do seem to turn up everywhere don't we MELON MELON MELON +++ OUT OF CHEESE ERROR +++
