It's simply Olive Drab 043 by Vallejo model Air (which they also advertise as RLM81 on the bottle). It is sprayed on a coat of black Vallejo PU primer.

Thanks, I might try it out. It's a bit of a shame that Vallejo does not spray as finely as Tamiya/Gunze which matters for mottling at 1/72 scale. Worth a shot though

Tamiya are reboxing some of Italeri,s tank kits but adding figures ,its a way of increasing Italeri on the Japanese market  tbh its not worth buying them here in the UK as you can get the originals considerably cheaper

Revell rebox some of ICM,s kits as well

Often it's actually harder to find the original Italeris, some are OOP but Tamiya still produces them. Off the top of my head, I can think of the OH-58, original A-10, original Mirage 2000C, original Rafale C (black prototype), most of their Stukas, etc. etc.

I think the Tamiya Hs 129 is the only Italeri reboxing that actually has different markings than any of the original Italeris

Which is fine, although there's a subtle but important difference between what is actually named in the specifications and what other colour systems just happen to coincide with the same shade.

For example FS34079 is a reasonable substitute for MAP Dark Green, but it would be misleading to state that the official colours for Temperate Land Scheme were FS34079 and Dark Earth.

All I'm saying here is that I'd like to know what a formal MOD document specifying colours for Typhoon actually calls for. It would be usual, as I said, for British military procurement to prescribe the use of American colours when the British Standards Institute exists.

FS36231 being very close to BS381C colours makes it even more questionable to my mind. That would involve someone making a conscious decision to prescribe an American equivalent for a standard we already have which would seem rather daft.

Use of FS36170 on our F35 Lightning IIs would at least have some logic to it if that were the case as there isn't an obvious equivalent in BS381 but I can't think why RAF Typhoons would officially painted in Federal Standard colours.

Because the Typhoon is not a British plane. Simple as that. :P

It's a 4 nation collaboration which includes 3 nations which extensively used US equipment in the past. In fact, when you think of it, all four nations used US fighters immediately preceding the Typhoon (Phantoms for UK, Germany, and Spain; F-104 for Italy).

It makes perfect sense to use Federal Standard being one all familiar with by now.

    Hi Stu,

Do you recall where the cockpit info came from? I ask because with various British Standards and RAL being widely available here, it seems surprising that an all-European consortium wouls resort to American colours for what are very unremarkable shades that could easily have been picked from something local such as Dark Admiralty Grey etc.

The Luftwaffe use some FS colours on their modern camouflage so it's not impossible I suppose, but still very unusual for a British aircraft. On a US built F35 I wouldn't question it but on a Typhoon it seems unintuitive. 😕

I have a pal who's a Typhoon pilot. I could probably arrange for a colour match but there must be something official out there.

To be fair 36231 and Dark Camouflage/Admiralty Grey are practically indistinguishable in the sense that the difference is no worse than that of the same color done by different manufacturers.

I think there are differences between 70's and 80's Mig-23 markings.

If I remember rightly (and I'm happy to be proven wrong) most if not all Mig-23's in use in the 70's were finished in all over light grey and not the 3 or 4 tone camo which is on all the options on the KP kits decal sheet.

I suspected that too but not a Flogger expert. There's no aftermarket decals on hannants at least for this period

  6. Back on topic, I agree with the "yawn" sentiment. Another early mark Spit? It's a saturated market so unless you come out with THE Mk I/II to rule them all why waste time? Clearly this is far from it.

Revell could have come out with a Mk XIV and it'd have been a game changer, even if it had a few flaws. There's just one steel mold kit (Academy) and it's a dog, and not everyone will want to do a short run kit which are the only alternatives. They could have done a Seafire of any mark. So many possibilities.

I don't blame Revell's engineers for putting out a less than perfect kit. I blame their marketers for not realizing a less than perfect kit of a different mark would have cornered the market given that there's no likely rival in the near future (Eduard is not planning Griffon Spits or so I think)

Very true. But that's not the point. I was referring to that silly expression - a rather terse demand for photographic proof of a written statement. Seems to be more prevalent on forums these days.

Sorry but am I the only person here who did not find the comment offensive in any conceivable way? That and the comment a few pages back. Sensitivities in a Spitfire thread seem to be drowning out tolerance of even the most inoffensive banter. Guess you Brits do have your limits after all ;)

I got the decals spare from the Hase kit if you want em?.

Sweet, many thanks! I *think* I might have some in my decal stash as I got this kit a long time ago but I may have lost them. When I come back home from holidays will look and if not I will definitely take you up on the offer. :)

  9. You know what I'd really like to see? Some of the Galland specials, with unique armament sets.

And Marseille's F-4/Trop with the red vertical stabilizer. Love that scheme.

I found the AZ's Gustav to have rather iffy fit and some questionable engineering decisions even if it looks good in the end, so hopefully the Friedrich (which I already have two in the stash) will be better. Still is a shame the very good interior is lost with a one-piece canopy.

  10. Help!

I want to build the Jumpin' Jacques (on the Tamiya kit) for the soon-to-end Mustang group build once I get home from holidays. However, aftermarket decals are non-existent for 1/72. My one choice is the Hasegawa kit but I hate Hase decals and will look quite thick against the natural metal finish. The other choice is the Hobby Boss "Mustang IV" kit which has them. However, I have looked at the stock decal pic and it looks like the shade of blue they use for the JJ name on the nose and the tail is the wrong shade of blue, much lighter than the real thing. It's also a bit annoying that the tail code is not a separate decal. I have not seen a non-stock picture of these decals, or a built Hobby Boss plane in this scheme.

I was wondering if anyone had this kit in their stash and would be willing to take a pic of the decals. Huge thanks!

(I could just go 1/48 and use the Superscale decals which are great)

The Mirage 2000-family would be very welcom, considering their  operational history: Gulf War 1991, Afghanistan, Libya, Yugoslavia, Mali, and a whole lot of ordnance. Not to mention all the nice special schemes. It's a shame Revell just repopped the old Italeri-kit without adding some more interesting stuff! Maybe a good opportunity for special hobby! ;)

    Alex

French subjects are the most ignored in 72 scale which is sad. So much variety in markings for the Mirage III and F.1 for example and only now do we have a decent example of the latter.

The Italeri 2000 is a dog of a kit. Desperately needs an update. Special Hobby do not disappoint us! Or maybe Hobby Boss? Their Rafale is decent enough and their Jaguar A is fantastic albeit with some critical ommissions (single piece canopy and no extendable airbrakes the latter being quite a regrettable fail). Surface detail on the Jag is among the best I've seen in 72 scale.

I might joing this build with a F.1CR if time allows

  12. I think I shall contribute with a dark green Lightning F2A from RAF Gutersloh. Never built a Lightning before but being Britmodeller, feels most appropriate.

If I have time, I'd like do a Soviet aircraft but seems like the 70s is a bit of a modelling black hole in 1/72 scale. The new KP MiG-23s look nice but I don't think any of them would be appropriate for this time period, while the Academy kit is really substandard and don't want to waste time on a bad kit. Don't have any appropriate MiG-21 kits in the stash either. Interceptors are probably not acceptable either since they would be USSR based, no? Plus they're kind of ugly (MiG-31 on the other hand... wowzers). Sukhois of the period were also pretty meh.
