That brings me to Italeri (afterall this is a thread about Italeri): sure they must have done something right if they are the only European mainstream company from the '70s still around in the hands of the original owners ! And it's easy to see where they their strengths are: a wide but balanced catalogue (proper mix of safe and less common subjects) and a very good distribution. In the past these were also complemented by a very reasonable pricing policy. Now this has been changing quite a bit and Italeri is becoming expensive, too expensive for the quality they offer. Will this continuous increase in prices be a problem for the company ? Not if others suffer the same fate (Airfix prices are also increasing considerably), however others manage to offer quality at good prices. Someone here keep criticising companies like Eduard for their prices... well, today Italeri is the expensive company, not Eduard ! Italeri still holds the advantage in terms of distribution so they may not worry (and Eduard's range is still very limited). My local hobby shop however is now starting to have more Hobby 2000 and Special Hobby kits than Italeri ones in the window....

In my opinion what they do right is that they are able to bring out old kits with great decals and more than once they upgrade the molds with extra parts!

For instance the ex AMT (K)C-135, Esci Mirage F1, or the venerable Dornier 24 to name a few.

But their new kits are very nice as well.

Thats what I like from them 😀

But even they make mistakes in my opinion with overpricing certain kits which are already over the break even point for centuries.

And even in my stash the Italeri kits are just a handful (less than a handful originals to be honest) and most are repops by them from other companies!

Did you read the article in Eduard Info above? With photoes of the sprues? And with the explicit claim from IP owner that his design has been stolen? And yes I deal with IP protection in the US and EU in software business. I believe if Eduard wants they could successfully sue Mr.Muzikant in court for this.

Questions are 1) did Valom officially buy the molds of William Brothers, 2) how many modifications are made to original design 3) and by the way does William Brothers still exist and if not what happened to their assets including IP?

A&A Busler is very different to Airfix Dakota - is there 50% of changes? I have no idea about what were the changes to Commando.

Buying molds of other manufacturers with release under you brand is never a problem. AZ/KP (seems) bought ex-Pavla molds so no problems when the re-release their kits.

UPD: William Brothers company looks active, site and store are working. What was the deal between Valom and William Bros - I have no idea but WB does not sell their Commando right now. I also looked at the sprues of William Bros and Valom. Valom rescribed all panel lines, created full interior, made different small exterior parts such as undercarriage, provided resin engines, photoetch, etc. 5 sprues instead of 2 not counting transparencies. So basically at least this is not 90% resemblance. Maybe 50% maybe not. Experts to validate it.

Regarding the Commando I have both kits…Valom is better in many details but still.
By the way no full interior only an upgraded cockpit!

Many parts still interchangeable as I have noticed.

Is the Basler different , yes it is a Basler but few items cobbled together from different kits anyway..even some Italeri parts !

The KP Let has been altered in many details as well and it is what it is …is it chique to cobble kits together in this manner !
I think not but this is a personal opinion!

And now back to topic 🙃

Couldn't agree more, I just don't get the current 'cover everything in rivets' fad at all. I keep hoping it'll eventually pass, but unfortunately it doesn't look like doing so anytime soon. I'm sure it's heresy to many on here, but to my eye the older, rivet-free Hasegawa kit looks far better. However, as you say, other people's mileage will no doubt vary.....

And a big plus from the Hase is that you can buy it already for a mere 25 euro’s…

Excellent story, @Kincora, and reminds us of how people are affected by these real, working aircraft!  How does the nose shape of the kit look to you?  I can already see I'll need to rotate the props 90 degrees to depict the engines stopped.

It seems to me that they kept the Airfix nose shape…I hope not and I hope it is just a quirk from the low res pic but still🙃

It's not that I don't like resin, it's the fuselage diameter mismatch that upsets me.

Well I have three Basler sets from alleycat and they match perfectly well and I had one TP-47 set (the Dodson/Ami type) and that was a mismatch!
These are for the Airfix kit.
If you happen to have the Constanza conversion that will only fit the Italeri C-47/DC3

  7. Just building the KP kit now (2 of them) …not a perfect kit as the fit of the engines is cumbersome but it will look fine in the end.

In my case it was a choice €17,95 against €39,95 still had to ad decals as the KP ones weren’t the ones I needed

I think the SBS resin kit is the best available DH88 now….

The "joke" is that 3D printing is one of the cheapest methods of mass producing the detail parts, yet it is still the most expensive end product.

I know it's a free market and I am voting with my wallet.

Maybe they have set a zero too many by accident when they made the page 🤫😂

The kit is probably based on the Airfix one, which is a very good thing. Some clues: wing spar, wing centre section...

It would be great if the panel lines would be toned down a bit.

I agree as there are certain (a lot)parts exactly the same as in the Airfix Dak !

Take the horizontal stabilizers (exactly the same shape) , glassparts , gear parts…….

Is this a bad thing? No not at all and I hope it has the spoked wheel, at least I have one on preorder at the aviation megastore…

Lets hope it has the outer leading edge in a concave shape as well then it will be a cracker !

I only can’t find a clear part for the cockpit escape hatch which is seen on these aircraft as well!

    cheers, Jan
