  1. Ah - to rust or not to rust - that IS the question Beefy is right - you always see small amounts of rust on ocean going ships at anchor points, bollards and scuppers. Modern Royal Navy being no exception Certainly the North Atlantic Escort vessels were positively unkempt with peeling paintwork - rust and general grime as befits transatlantic passages and rapid turn-around times at ports, with little time to "spruce-up". However - the WW2 photos of the RN capital ships generally show them in pretty mint condition to my mind. I cant recall seeing worn superstructure paint (I stand to be corrected - there'll always be exceptions!). I suspect that thise areas that could be reached were kept very tidy. Clearly unless you are in port - accessing hull sides was less practical. One issue that bedevils us as modellers is how frequently paint schemes changed indicating that these ships were painted often when actually in port. I think grime streaks will always be more common than rust streaks. I'd be interested to hear other's thoughts Rob
  2. Very neat indeed. The larger scale of 1/72 certainly begs decals! Rob
  3. Neat work on the railings - they always transform a model. I like the yellow/red raft as well. Have a good Easter break Rob
  4. My thoughts echo Beefy's exactly - great looking model and dio - the detail on 1/72 seems to be improving++ Rob
  5. Some winging their way as we spoke - "where you lead ...........others follow"
  6. Like Beefy said - a masterclass in scratchbuilding and innovation with fastidious attention to detail that has produced a unique and Wonderful Model. What a tribute to the original and it's celebration. Hugely inspirational Congratulations John What's the next project going to be? Rob
  7. ..."a bit rough in places"...........................................really? It's Superb Love the overall finish, subtle weathering and superlative rigging Fab Rob And BTW - Welcome to the site - quite an entry 😎
  8. We certainly do. John, Kudos for your application and attention span - no ADHD here! But what a Superb end result - Thrice Wow - she is an absolute Beauty Rob
  9. Like those flags Beefy - will lycra thread support them do you think? I struggle with Flag decals Rob
  10. I'd use masking tape - sticky side up on old Takeaway plastic lids - and then gently brush paint them - tricky Rob
  11. Hi John - The halyards are 20 Dernier Infini thread. I glue a tiny 3mm stub on the bridge side then stick 2 ends to the cross-tree blocks to creat a loop then gently pull the loop around the "stub". Rob
  12. Hi Jeff "fog tool" was my description as I didn't know what to call it. Splash Target seems altogether more apt - Thanks. Thanks Beefy - Agree - enjoyed it a lot. RFI pending Rob
  13. Portholes are filled with Krystal Klear as is the Bridge windscreen Flag halyards and rear aeriels are added Likewise the aft Depth charge racks, depth charge throwers and refills The Bridge lattice supports are added - now it really does look like a Corvette And finally ship's boats are added, together with the multiple deck lockers that gives these vessels such a "busy" appearance I scratched and added a Fog tool that I saw in Liverpool Maritime museum. It was towed and threw up a substantial plue behind it which apparently made the vessel more apparent in Fog. Rather hopeful thinking methinks but it adds a bit of detail and some more colour And you can see it tucked next tothe kedge anchor If you look at the original photos you'll see a line stretching from the top of the turret to the bridge. It took me a while to find out that it's a "speaking tube" pipe allowing the Bridge to communicat with the 4" turret Virtually everything is done now other than the foc'sle deck which I need to keep clear to help me press it in to the base when it's "planted". Once she's in - the foc'sle deck can be fitted out with winch etc and then it's just the crew to do. At long last. Thanks for looking Rob
  14. Suffering for your art young'un You do take on challenging projects......... Rob
  15. Thanks Notty - never knew that but really interesting Rob
  16. Oh - I really like that sea!!!! And I really like those deck tones Great looking model that is going to look better and better with detail Rob
  17. Wow! That is a Fabulous build and seascape and it that's your first then it's time for me to get my jacket!! I like everything about it - you have really nailed the sea Pretty much flawless in my opinion Makes me want to get my Type 23 out and build it - tell me about the black flag please Rob
  18. What the Gaffer said. Surprising amount of rigging for a modern vessel The end is Nigh!! Rob
  19. April 7th 2021................................shurley knott????
  20. I like colour and I like Camo and Boy have you provided both Superb build - your best yet - Love everything about it - did anyone mention the camouflage? And that aerial array is just showing off!! Such a neat clean build.......................................if only those portholes were darker Rob
  21. And another fan for that/those fairlead(s). "Necessity is the mother of invention". Rob
  22. Funnel stays are tied using Bob's Buckles and 40 Dernier Infini thread The Foc'sle is then assembled It's my first Flower to have hedgehog. The projectiles are painted dark green Once the breakwater is fitted out the main bridge structure can be stuck down. DONT forget as I did, that there is an etched metal support for the Asdic office. I managed to retrofit mine by removing the Hedgehog. it's not easy to see on the instructions. FWIW Mignonette had an atypical vent cowl immediately in front of the wheel room behind the large breakwater Once the bridge structure is atached the side partitions can be added Then the Radar tower assembly can be fitted Mast and rigging and now you are flying! The 2 pounder aft Pom Pom platform is fiddly in that asks you to fit brass rods as legs - it's easier to replace with plastic rod as cutting to length which is necessary, is a lot easier The rear railings fit well into moulded grooves - a nice touch. The railings are commendably thin. The funnel deck is fitted out with Cowl vents and railings The sold fittings between the cowl vents should have "wiings" that should fold inwards but I could not get mine to fit in the space - I doubt you will either - the easiest solution is to break the "wings" off and glue as single "slabs" The kits are Very detailed, as explified by the very fine vents that festoon the Corvette Rear railings and 2pdr platform ladders now fitted. Ladders were fiddly to do and stuck down with matt varnish. The main mast ladder I always dread doing. In reality they were often rope ladders, This eventually "sat" with a mixture of CA glue and matt varnish Front railings now applied - they come moulded integrally with the side breakwaters, which I was uncertain about - However they fit well and logically it's the right way to present them. I've used diluted PVA glue exclusively on the last few models to secure railings - I used to use CA glue to "pin down", but find the pieces sit so well that PVA alone suffices. Final detailing now left and it'll soon be done Thanks for looking Rob
