  1. It would be great to see how you do that. Perhaps a WIP next time 😉 Once again though, great model!
  2. Amazing stuff. Love the navigation lights. When you say edges sharpened is that just an expression or is that literally what you mean? What’s the technique if so? Best, JB
  3. Cheers guys - thanks for taking the time to leave a comment. Procopius - uh oh! Am I going to be swearing by the end of the next modelling session?! Hope it's not too fiddly for me, 'cause it ain't cheap!
  4. Thanks all for your kind comments. Now I look back I do agree about the antenna wire and have just invested in some superfine Uschi rigging thread which is apparently designed to suit 1/72 scale. Should be with me in a couple of days and then I’ll update and post some new pictures.
  5. Hello BM's, May I present Airfix's P-40B in 1.72 from the Pearl Harbour 75th AGS... with a difference: I modelled this P-40B to represent Flt.Lt. Clive R. "Killer" Caldwell's mount in 1941. Caldwell was the leading Australian air ace of World War II. He is officially credited with shooting down 28.5 enemy aircraft in over 300 operational sorties, including an ace in a day. In addition to his official score, he has been ascribed six probables and 15 damaged. Caldwell flew Curtiss P-40 Tomahawks and Kittyhawks in the North African Campaign and Supermarine Spitfires in the South West Pacific Theatre. He was the highest-scoring P-40 pilot from any air force and the highest-scoring Allied pilot in North Africa (source Wikipedia). No new techniques on this one, but I thought I'd try and display the craft after a good few months in the field, sand blasted, dirty but well serviced and ready for action. Decals are from Xtradecal, courtesy of @murfv after a trade up. Hope you enjoy the pictures and as usual critique always welcome. Cheers, JB.
  6. And it works. pay attention to the instructions he gives precisely and you can't get it wrong. Any fogging does go away as it dries.
  7. So the painting instructions say licht blau underneath, licht grau on the sides with the dark green mottling over that which I’ll stick too. I’ll probably paint a line of the grey with the air brush rather than mask over the blue... going to be a challenge this one but looking forward to giving it a go.
  8. Exceptional builds! Amazing weathering, particularly on the string bag. I really like the exposed fabric and especially how it continues through the star on the wings. I salute you Sir! JB
  9. Thanks Steve, @murfv is sorting me out his spares from his Falcon set.
  10. She's a beauty in some ways. I built one when I was 12 or something and still remember that when it was finished, it was one of my favourites - hence the nostalgia. I remember my attempt at the mottling too... this time round it's going to get the airbrush treatment 'gulp'! Cheers Gaz, bet that looked awesome though The box art is excellent - that's another thing that drew me to it: I contemplated doing something about the cowlings but opted in the end to just increase the depth of the lines between them to remove the flat no detail when looking at it from aft: @murfv has very kindly sorted me out with some leftovers he had from the falcon set, I'll just have to ensure I put a little bit more effort into the cockpit as it will be far more visible now!! Also ordered some clearfix so that should sort the port window to the rear of the plane. Thanks for the info though We all did didn't we - this was just a great looking plane with the HS 293's under the wings. Can't wait to detail those! For those that want some more nostalgia, how about some of these old parts: Look at those machine guns!! And almost transparent ejector marks... going to have to sort them out, that's for sure. Cheers, JB.
  11. Nice one - I'll see if I can obtain one/ask in the 'wanted' section.
  12. Hi Stu, that's genius! Just watched a video on making them with the glue - exactly what I need. I'll order a bottle tonight She's certainly coming along. Go on... get the revel one and have a go with the mottling! They're pretty rare now; a familiar auction site wants serious money for them.
  13. Good afternoon fellow modellers! After a visit to a well known airshow last month and foolishly walking into the amazing pop-up model stalls that appear on those days, I made a bit of a mistake... Overcome by nostalgia, and with my Old Man edging me on, I picked up Airfix's He 177 'Greif', fully complete and in 1970's boxing for a reasonable twenty quid. Now... this is where the fun began (but honestly what more did I expect?!). I've spent hours upon hours on her so far from completely reworking the cockpit, with bulkheads, control panels, new seats with milliput padding, through to sanding the entire thing down removing all raised panel lines and rivets then re-scribing the whole bloody lot! There is still a ridiculous amount of work to do and I have some issues I hope you can help me resolve. First up, the clear glass in these ancient moulds are horrendous and also, through all the re-scribe work one of the 'windows' has popped through into the fuselage. PVA just didn't cut it this time does anyone have any genius ideas on how to, from the outside (!), replace the window? Secondly, does anyone know if there are replacement clear parts for these? I've looked online but haven't been able to find anything. Thanks as always, JB And for those of you interested, here she is so far:
  14. Thanks Martin, jet's look menacing head on don't they? Cheers Kapam, certainly took some time to get right but I am pleased with the finish. She's currently blinding all the other pilots on the modelling shelf Cheers Tony
  15. Feeling some dejavu here! Great progress on the Lightning. I had loads of fit issues with my 1/72 airfix version so know the pain. What did you use to mask the NMF before putting on a protective coat of gloss? Looking forward to seeing the progress. JB
  16. Excellent! As others have said, nice to see something different. A quick question if you will; how did you tint the canopy? Cheers, JB
  17. Thanks Cybershed - the NMF on a Lightning is just irresistible! Haha! Totally agree - the Chrome I bought for the job looks no different than the polished aluminium. I have a way to go before I end up with something as cool as this though 'ol foil master: You are too kind Sir!
  18. Cheers Rob, thanks for the info a while back on aluminium tape too! Thank you Steve. I learnt several lessons during the painting and documented them in the WIP thread which may help you if you give them a whirl. Very kind sir!
  19. Thanks Phone Phixer! I must admit that was my favourite part on the model... I like the arty imprecise bits Good advice from someone who's not an expert I'm still sceptical about the AK black undercoat and Gauzy. I found that masking without protecting lifted the metal coat off or left a mark despite the manufacturer saying it wouldn't and even de-tacking the Tamiya masking tape beforehand. I also found that it too peeled the Gauzy top coat off as well! You just have to be careful as you have said. Still, live and learn. thanks for the five star clap - i'm honoured Cheers - again, thank you all for your generous comments.
  20. Thanks, makes perfect sense. Time to fire up the modelling bench!!
  21. Thanks, build looks very impressive. Well done. with reference to the information on 1, thank you. What about the alloy where the wings have folded? Should this be Aotake as well or bare alluminium? JB
  22. Time to revive this thread! I'm about to start my Airfix Kate and have a few questions which I'm hoping one of you informed lot can help me answer! I plan to pose my Kate with the wings folded and the cockpit open, so... 1. Will the exposed wing joins be the same metallic blue as the wheel wells as in Pappy's build or just plain old aluminium colour? 2. Would a Kate with it's wings folded likely have the cockpit canopy open? I can't see why not... What's the opinions? 3. Does Humbrol 30 sound right for the top camo of a Kate as Airfix suggest? I'm was planning to use Tamiya's XF-11 JN Green which looks different to Humbrol 30 but Tamiya are usually spot on for Japanese colours. 4. Green or metallic blue cockpit? Thanks all! JB
  23. Hi John, thanks for the thumbs up. You look like you have achieved quite a finish on both models using Alclad. Aren't they a bit of a pig to work with - as in you touch it it blemishes etc. What did you seal them with as they do look immaculate yet still very shiny! JB
  24. Hi Dennis, I found an in-flight picture of the squadron I depicted on active duty and their planes were gleaming. There are some ground shots where they appear more 'dirty' so I should imagine you can choose between polished NMF and a more oxidised look and not be criticised! Whatever the case the chrome is always shiny from what I have seen. I'm no expert of course, I just did my own limited research. JB
