  1. I’d definitely build Col. Olds Phantom! What a leg end. I want this kit but it’s just where to display it... plus I did a 1/72 SEA camo recently. Enjoy 😁
  2. This is Red 5 I’m goin in! Thanks CFFU Thanks 😁 That’s a great compliment, thank you! Thanks Crumper, it’s very detailed and certainly gives 1/72 models a run for their money!
  3. Happy New Year BM's! May I present, one Revell X-Wing in 1:112 scale: This ones been sitting in my stash for a while and I decided I needed a nice quick and easy build after wrestling with a 1970's Airfix He 177 for the past for months. This is a great little model, the kit is pretty basic and can be built without glue or the need to paint the entire model, only picking out the different colour panels and using the decals. It's very detailed for the scale and very easy to put together. Some minor criticism; the s-foils can only be modelled in the attack position, there is no option to build with landing gear and also, no stand supplied, so I'll have to construct my own. Some more pictures for your viewing pleasure! Critique always welcome and hope you enjoy. Cheers, JB Obligatory scale shot, she's tiny!!
  4. Nice! That's some serious hacking too. Impressed with the tailplane, including the turret in particular.
  5. Cheers Polo! It was a 'fascinating' build She is old! The decals attested to that! Thanks Vinnie. I think so. I learnt a hell of a lot on her, particularly with the rescribing and riveting so was well worth it. Thanks Martin, I certainly did enjoy the build. You don't get the finesse on these older kits as you do with the modern offerings, but this somehow made it far more enjoyable. I remember spending a whole weekend on and off sanding, filing, sanding, priming (repeat) on the fuselage to get the joins to vanish. I'd like to see the Whif, can you do an RFI please? I did wonder with the wheel bay doors after research, but after having spent time detailing them, I decided to pose them open. It makes for a more interesting model IMO. The gear colour is probably wrong as well, but again, after seeing some reference to it, I couldn't resist I haven't paid too much notice to the props but I didn't like the cowlings... they look very basic when viewing from behind. I cut some deeper notches in mine to make them a little bit more believable but they're still ugly. Thanks again! As ever CFFU, thank you kind sir! Cheers HL-10. It's not often I say it but I am pleased with this one Cheers! Thanks Steve, it certainly took me back building it. The mottling was actually fun in the end after I got the technique down. Riveting certainly had it's moments, but Dymo tape and steel rules are the way forward! Thanks mate. Very kind Steve, thank you!
  6. Ho Ho Ho BM's! I have finally finished my He 177 Greif; This in an original 1970's boxed Airfix kit I picked up at Duxford's September airshow which has taken countless hours to complete... but I have to say I'm pleased with the result Highlights; Fully detailed cockpit and rear turret interior, which unfortunately you can't see as the transparencies are not that great on the 50 year old kit Landing gear and bays detailed, including adding bulkheads to the tail wheel to hide the gaps to the interior fuselage Removed all raised panel lines and rivet detail, then re-scribed and re-riveted the entire model Used the original decals but added a swastika for authenticity Matched the original colour scheme as closely as possible New technique used to create glass out of Clearfix for rear and front portholes WIP here: Thanks for looking and hope you enjoy. Comments and critique always welcomed.
  7. Good evening BM's! I've managed to get a little more bench time and have been quite successful in moving the Griffon forward. First off, she's on her legs! I managed to get all four (five with the tail) touching along with looking almost even. I added some extra details to the landing struts and coloured these dark yellow as per some war paint schemes seen online. This may not be accurate but it makes them stand out and just looks pretty cool in my opinion so I ignored the dark grau as her the instructions. Secondly I added some chipping around the access panels and obvious areas on the airframe such as the leading edges and where moving parts many have not had a decent coat of primer. I then applied my usual oil paint based wash and oil drips, stains etc and as a seafaring bomber added some rust streaks. I may be able to get the matt coat and some finer details such as undercarriage covers and gun turrets added at the weekend Hope you enjoy, JB
  8. Hehe... oh you shall see my friend! Steve knows! Thank you I've hidden most of it with a nice grimey/rusty wash and oil treatment... photo's to follow shortly.
  9. Hello All! It's been a busy couple of weeks in my household as we've just welcomed into the world our first born! Needless to say, plastic time has taken a backseat but in between nappy changes, feeding and catching up on sleep I have managed to cover the Griffon in several coats of Clear and completed the decaling. Keeping as original as possible, I used the kit decals. Time has taken its toll on these over the years and they were very yellow when I first opened the box. I left them in the sun for several weeks and this has reduced this considerably but they are very fragile: I had applied the first set of decals without trimming the edges and I wasn't overly pleased with the result as you can still see the yellowing: This will clear up with a bit weathering. Trimming to the decal proved risky as this in some cases 'flaked' the edges. I'll either have to weather to cover up or paint the edges. Still, it gives them a rough, applied in the field, look. This was the very brittle decal that had split into multiple pieces. I need to fill in where it hasn't quite gone back together. Cheers, JB
  10. Thanks Gaz, I hope to get some more time during the week. I’m just working on protecting the paint work at the moment with some Clear, before masking up ready to paint the landing gear bays. Then it’s decal time... I hope those near 50 year old decals don’t give me too much ‘greif’ 😉 The mottling can put you off... it certainly takes some patience and guts to just go for it! Glad you like though and yes, I was thinking that the title of the post probably needs an update as well 😀 That’s some interesting history there Martin and new to me, thanks for sharing. There isn’t a single 177 airframe left in the world so it’s gems like this which are as good as we’ll ever see. Glad you like my attempt so far 😌
  11. Ah the nostalgia! I remember the white plastic and trying to get the big red decal to sit right. Funny what you can remember 20 plus years later. Very neat build and great to see an old classic. Nice one! JB
  12. Thanks Woody! I've enjoyed it really... honest! I've learnt a lot on this one and as I said earlier in the thread, it gives confidence to try and update some of the old classics. Although I must confess I have asked for Revell's recent 1/72 "Memphis Belle" for Christmas, as I wanted to avoid mass panel scribing on the next build Ha, thanks Phil. I'm eager to crack on, just need some bench time. Hi Adrian, I did the mottle first as I thought, hell if I cock it up or overspray, it's less to correct. I suppose in reality they would have done this last though and might have even got it on the splinter camo, to your point on doing the real thing. I did find myself having to constantly check for evenness, as you say, it's easy to lose perspective in 1/72 let alone over a 60ft fuselage! Thanks for your kind comments
  13. Minor update, I've now corrected the lines around the tail which I'm much more happier with. It was keeping me awake at night
  14. Cheers guys! I am now tempted by other old kits. I was looking at the old Airfix B-26 Marauder last night...
  15. Good evening BM's, time for another update! I have been very lucky being allowed on the modelling all weekend by SWMBO!! Splinter camo completion was on the task list for today, so first up some masking: I followed the instructions explicitly here, as with the paint codes. These converted (almost) to Tamiya XF19 for the grey, XF11 for the dark green and XF61 for the lighter greeny-brown and mottling. Here's the results: Masking tape on the wing tips, nose and tail for protection! I also managed to get the red rudder completed as well, although I may have to 'edge' the green up a little, where the tail fin meets the fuselage. Hope you enjoy. Cheers, JB.
  16. Sorry to hear Hope the wife hasn't had anything too unpleasant to correct and the dogs are ok?
  17. Evening BM's, ready for some mottling and splinter camo?! All, in all, not bad. There was some sputtering towards the end which I had to go over with the grey and then again with the green. The above picture shows the damage. That's now gone fortunately I've also masked up and added the lighter green: I've added some variations to this and will tomorrow (hopefully) apply the second colour. Cheers, JB
  18. I do enjoy getting the oil paint out and making them look used 800kg bomb so yes it's a monster! This is reportedly what the very plane carried. Cheers! Why sir, you are too kind. Thanks David, you won't be disappointed, they're great kits.
  19. Thanks CFFU. Free time is my biggest enemy at the moment! Hopefully I'll be able to tackle the mottling this weekend though Haha! Cheers Adrian, TWO is just asking for it! Maybe I'll convince you to start one? Thanks Gaz, it's far from perfect but once all the paint is on, decaled and weathered, hopefully the mistakes I've made won't show too much. Thanks man! Cheers - this is the first time I've really done anything like this so I am pleased. I've learnt lot's as well so it's really been worth it. It actually opens up the secondhand or old kit buying market as there's so much still out there with raised panel lines that I feel I can now tackle.
  20. Hello fellow BM's. I thought I'd share another one of my recent builds with you if I may... here I present one IJN B5N2 'Kate' depicted ready for the attack on Pearl Harbour: This is Airfix's excellent and highly detailed kit which allows you to pose the aircraft in a variety of setups. I thought I'd show mine on the deck of Zuikaku loaded but wings folded and canopy closed ready for the second wave to take off and hit the US Pacific Fleet. I didn't have many problems building this one, the fit was good, the canopy nice and clear and paint scheme simple. I made some guesses on the colour of the aotake but decided to show it as a deep metallic blue as Tamiya suggest from their paint range. Weathering is minimal as I understand the airplanes were well maintained at this stage of the war, particularly before they saw much action. Decals were cut right to the detail to avoid silvering and I had to apply quite a bit of Microsol and set to get them to behave. Some minor riveting applied to the wings to make them a little more interesting. Hope you enjoy and feedback as ever welcomed. JB
  21. Good evening BM's, a little progress report. Most of the He 177 is built, re-scribed and riveted which has taken some time to say the least. I managed today to get the licht blau on and give it some subtle variations in toning: I've still got some work to do around the cockpit which has taken many, many attempts at fitting sanding and generally trying to get right. It's not far off: I ended up using the kit transparencies in the end despite being very kindly sent some vac form parts... I just couldn't get them to fit right no matter what I tried. A shame but then it is an old kit. Hopefully I'll be able to use the remainder of them on the tail and gunner positions. Cheers, JB
  22. Good evening BM's. The superfine Uschi rigging thread arrived and a I managed to 'rewire' the Tomahawk. I must say, I found the stuff great to use once I got the hang of it and until you're up close, you can't see it which is true to real life so I'm well pleased. Updated all the pics; hopefully you'll all agree?!
